Background and Purpose- Many patients with acute ischemic stroke are not eligible for thrombolysis or mechanical reperfusion therapies due to contraindications, inaccessible vascular occlusions, late presentation, or large infarct core. Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) stimulation to enhance collateral flow and stabilize the blood-brain barrier offers an alternative, potentially more widely deliverable, therapy. Methods- In a randomized, sham-controlled, double-masked trial at 41 centers in 7 countries, patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke not treated with reperfusion therapies within 24 hours of onset were randomly allocated to active SPG stimulation or sham control.

Remote ischemia-reperfusion detrimentally affects myocardial function by initially interfering with the rate of contraction. We investigated the usefulness of isoproterenol versus external electrical pacing in attenuating secondary functional damage of isolated Wistar rat atria. Atrial strips (n = 10/group) were bathed within oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit solution that exited from isolated livers that had been either perfused normally (controls) or underwent no flow (ischemia) for 2 h.

The most important factor to cause hip fractures in elderly is probably osteoporosis. Other factors are the increase in fall frequency and the protective response to trauma. Osteoporotic fractures occur most commonly, at the hip, vertebra, distal radius and proximal humerus.

Introduction: Elderly patients who fracture their hips are susceptible to complications associated with bed rest before surgery. In some institutions a skin traction device is used in order to relieve pain before surgery. The authors followed ten patients who developed severe (deep) skin slough and evaluated the relationship to the skin traction device.
