Objectives: To investigate whether meticulously following a treat-to-target (T2T)-strategy in daily clinical practice will lead to less radiographic progression in patients with active RA who start (new) DMARD-therapy.

Methods: Patients with RA from 10 countries starting/changing conventional synthetic or biologic DMARDs because of active RA, and in whom treatment intensification according to the T2T principle was pursued, were assessed for disease activity every 3 months for 2 years (RA-BIODAM cohort). The primary outcome was the change in Sharp-van der Heijde (SvdH) score, assessed every 6 months.

Background: Idiopathic thrombocytopaenic purpura [ITP] is an acquired haematological disorder with an incidence of 1-6 per 100 00/year. ITP and inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] comorbidity has been reported in the literature, but insights regarding the course, outcome and optimal management are limited by its rarity. The current study aimed to evaluate the clinical presentation and outcome of ITP in patients with IBD.

Candida albicans evades NK cell elimination via binding of Agglutinin-Like Sequence proteins to the checkpoint receptor TIGIT.

Nat Commun

May 2022

The Concern Foundation Laboratories at the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research, Hebrew University Medical School, IMRIC, Jerusalem, 91120, Israel.

Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen and a prevalent cause of deadly bloodstream infections. Better understanding of the immune response against it, and the ways by which it evades immunity, are crucial for developing new therapeutics against it. Natural Killer (NK) cells are innate lymphocytes best known for their role against viruses and tumors.

Acute Liver Failure following a Single Dose of Atezolizumab, as Assessed for Causality Using the Updated RUCAM.

Case Rep Gastrointest Med

March 2022

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have become major therapeutic agents in oncology over the last few years. However, they are associated with a variety of potentially severe autoimmune phenomena. We present a patient with advanced adenocarcinoma of the lung, who presented with acute liver injury two weeks following his first treatment with atezolizumab, rapidly deteriorating to fulminant liver failure.

Polatuzumab-based regimen or CAR T cell for patients with refractory/relapsed DLBCL-a matched cohort analysis.

Ann Hematol

April 2022

Hematology Division, Sourasky Medical Center and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • - Polatuzumab (Pola)-based regimens and CAR T cells result in better outcomes than traditional chemoimmunotherapy for patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B cell lymphoma (R/R DLBCL), but there's debate on which is more effective.
  • - A retrospective study compared the efficacy of CAR T therapy to Pola-rituximab and Pola-bendamustine in patients who had undergone at least two prior treatments, using propensity score matching for accurate comparison.
  • - Results showed that CAR T had higher overall (83% vs. 66%) and complete response rates (58% vs. 44%), and significantly longer progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS

The default network is causally linked to creative thinking.

Mol Psychiatry

March 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and The Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Creative thinking represents a major evolutionary mechanism that greatly contributed to the rapid advancement of the human species. The ability to produce novel and useful ideas, or original thinking, is thought to correlate well with unexpected, synchronous activation of several large-scale, dispersed cortical networks, such as the default network (DN). Despite a vast amount of correlative evidence, a causal link between default network and creativity has yet to be demonstrated.

Age-Adjusted Normative Values for Hip Patient-Reported Outcome Measures.

Am J Sports Med

January 2022

Division of Orthopedic Surgery, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential clinical instruments used for assessing patient function, assisting in clinical decision making, and quantifying outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical management. However, PROMs are often designed using patients with preexisting pathology and typically assume that a patient without the pathology would have a perfect or near perfect score. This may result in unrealistic expectations or falsely underestimate how well a patient is doing after treatment.

Repetitive amiodarone administration causes liver damage via adipose tissue ER stress-dependent lipolysis, leading to hepatotoxic free fatty acid accumulation.

Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol

September 2021

The Research Center for Digestive Tract and Liver Diseases, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Drug-induced liver injury is an emerging form of acute and chronic liver disease that may manifest as fatty liver. Amiodarone (AMD), a widely used antiarrhythmic drug, can cause hepatic injury and steatosis by a variety of mechanisms, not all completely understood. We hypothesized that repetitive AMD administration may induce hepatic lipotoxicity not only via effects on the liver but also via effects on adipose tissue.

Transition of care (TOC) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with chronic gastrointestinal disorders has received increased attention, especially in those with inflammatory bowel disease. AYAs with hereditary polyposis syndromes are a heterogeneous group of patients with overlapping and complex medical needs. These patients are particularly vulnerable because of the risk of loss of continuity of care and subsequent poor disease outcomes.

Infliximab (IFX) is administered intravenously using weight-based dosing (5 mg/kg) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Our hypothesis is that especially young children need a more intensive treatment regimen than the current weight-based dose administration. We aimed to assess IFX pharmacokinetics (PK), based on existing therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) data in IBD patients < 10 years.

BMI in the lower and upper quartiles at diagnosis and at 1-year follow-up is significantly associated with higher risk of disease exacerbation in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease.

Eur J Pediatr

January 2021

Pediatric Gastroenterology Unit, "Dana-Dwek" Children's Hospital, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, 6 Weizmann Street, 6423906, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been associated with underweight and malnutrition, but obesity may also serve as a negative prognostic factor. This study aimed to present the longitudinal course of height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) of children from IBD diagnosis to 18 months of follow-up, and to describe the impact of BMI on the clinical course of the disease. One hundred and fifty-two children were identified, of whom 85 had Crohn's disease (CD) and 67 had ulcerative colitis (UC).
