Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at how doctors in Europe treat people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because there are more traumatic events happening recently.
  • Out of 611 doctors, most recommended using antidepressants like sertraline, but there were differences in medicine choices based on where the doctors were from in Europe.
  • The findings show that while many doctors agree on treatment methods, differences in practice suggest that more communication and education are needed to follow treatment guidelines better across Europe.

Background: Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of Serotonergic antidepressants (SA) treatment, and persists in some patients despite drug discontinuation, a condition termed post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD). The risk for PSSD is unknown but is thought to be rare and difficult to assess. This study aims to estimate the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) and PSSD in males treated with SAs.

Purpose Of Review: Among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness interventions have demonstrated improvement in depression, anxiety, and glycemic control. We assessed whether these treatment modalities have shown usefulness in adolescents with T2D or at risk for T2D.

Recent Findings: Data are limited on the use of the abovementioned therapeutic interventions and include only adolescent girls at risk for T2D.

Insecure attachment orientations are disproportionately frequent in child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors and have been found to mediate some of the effects of CSA on adult interpersonal and romantic difficulties, including sexual revictimization (SR). A sense of relational entitlement (SRE) has received growing attention in psychological discourse and research in recent years. It reflects both adaptive (assertive) and pathological (restricted or inflated) attitudes to the assertion of needs and rights and has not been studied in adult CSA survivors.

The Effect of Citalopram on Genome-Wide DNA Methylation of Human Cells.

Int J Genomics

July 2018

Epigenetics Laboratory, Department of Anatomy, Howard University, 520 W St. NW, Washington, DC 20059, USA.

Commonly used pharmaceutical drugs might alter the epigenetic state of cells, leading to varying degrees of long-term repercussions to human health. To test this hypothesis, we cultured HEK-293 cells in the presence of 50 M citalopram, a common antidepressant, for 30 days and performed whole-genome DNA methylation analysis using the NimbleGen Human DNA Methylation 3x720K Promoter Plus CpG Island Array. A total of 626 gene promoters, out of a total of 25,437 queried genes on the array (2.

Purpose Of Review: The goal of this paper is to review the research literature regarding the needs of preschoolers in the context of disasters and terrorism with the aim of understanding the existing methods for assessment, prevention, and intervention to provide recommendations and point out required research and development.

Recent Findings: We differentiate between screening tools that provide initial evaluation and assessment tools for diagnosing preschooler children's pathology and review possible interventions that address the preschool child's needs before, during, and after the incident itself. We also emphasize the lack of dissemination and research of prevention programs and mass interventions for preschoolers.

Purpose Of Review: This paper surveys the existent theoretical and research literature regarding the needs of preschool children in the context of disasters and terrorism with the aim of understanding (a) the consequences of such events for young children and (b) the main moderating variables influencing the event-consequence association to learn how to enhance their resilience.

Recent Findings: Consequences include a variety of emotional, behavioral, and biological outcomes. Implications for refugee children are discussed.

Background: Children's exposure to stressful events requires effective interventions to strengthen adaptive development. Expanding the teachers' role to deliver resilience-focused interventions has been shown to enhance children's coping and to have a positive impact on the teachers themselves.

Method: This study compared the self-efficacy and perceived performance of 48 teachers following the implementation of such an intervention with 52 control teachers.

The study aims to determine whether 60-minute sessions of prolonged exposure (PE) that include 20 minutes of imaginal exposure (IE) are noninferior to the standard 90-minute sessions that include 40 minutes of IE in treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to explore the relationship of treatment outcome to within- and between-session habituation and change in negative cognitions. Thirty-nine adult veterans with chronic PTSD were randomly assigned to 90-minute (n=19) or 60-minute (n=20) sessions of PE. PTSD symptoms were assessed by an unaware independent evaluator before and after treatment and at 6-month follow-up.

The role of the precuneus in metaphor comprehension: evidence from an fMRI study in people with schizophrenia and healthy participants.

Front Hum Neurosci

October 2014

Tel Aviv-Brull Community Mental Health Center Tel Aviv, Israel ; Child Study Center, Yale University New Haven, CT, USA.

Comprehension of conventional and novel metaphors involves traditional language-related cortical regions as well as non-language related regions. While semantic processing is crucial for understanding metaphors, it is not sufficient. Recently the precuneus has been identified as a region that mediates complex and highly integrated tasks, including retrieval of episodic memory and mental imagery.

Article Synopsis
  • In recent studies on major depressive disorder (MDD), around 30% of patients given a placebo showed significant improvement, suggesting a strong placebo effect that is hard to minimize.
  • This study aimed to explore how trial design influences the efficacy of escitalopram treatment in MDD patients by examining factors like patient and rater expectations, different outcome measures, and visit frequency.
  • Results indicated that the overall response to escitalopram was similar to previous studies, regardless of trial design or participants' beliefs about their treatment, with most responders convinced they received the active medication.
