Background: X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) is associated with uninhibited FGF23 activity, which leads to phosphaturia, hypophosphatemia and depressed active vitamin D (1,25OH2D) levels. Conventional treatment with phosphate supplements and vitamin D analogs may lead to hypercalciuria (HC), nephrocalcinosis (NC) and hyperparathyroidism. We investigated the effects of burosumab treatment, an anti-FGF23 monoclonal antibody recently approved for XLH, on these complications.

Predicting whether extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment duration affects prognosis is important both medically and economically. : We conducted a retrospective, multicenter study to better understand the outcomes of patients treated with veno-venous (VV) ECMO over a prolonged duration, analyzing data from the Israel ECMO registry. The study included all adult patients treated with VV-ECMO due to COVID-19-induced respiratory failure.

The aim of this finite element analysis (FEA) was to investigate the distribution of von Mises stress within dental implant components, as well as trabecular and cortical bone. The study considered various bone qualities that influence cortical thickness in contact with the implant, specifically examining cortical thicknesses of 0.5, 1.

Introduction: The effectiveness of the direct anterior approach (DAA) compared to other surgical approaches for total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with lumbar spine stiffness remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare clinical outcomes, including dislocation rates and other complications, between DAA and other surgical approaches for THA in patients with lumbar spine stiffness.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the DAA with other surgical approaches (anterolateral, direct lateral, posterolateral and direct superior) in patients with lumbar spine stiffness undergoing THA.

Purpose: Missense de novo variants in CACNA1G, which encodes the Cav3.1 T-type calcium channel, have been associated with a severe, early-onset form of cerebellar disorder with neurodevelopmental deficits (SCA42ND). We explored a large series of pediatric cases carrying heterozygous variants in CACNA1G to further characterize genotype-phenotype correlations in SCA42ND.

Background: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is characterized by a high tumor mutational burden due to solar damage and a favorable response to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy. Yet, we encounter tumors arising in areas with minimal sun exposure, such as cSCC that develops in chronically inflamed skin, also known as Marjolin's Ulcer (MU). The response of MU-SCC to immunotherapy remains unknown.

Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Tailoring nutrition to measured energy expenditure (EE) and provision of adequate protein amounts, is considered gold standard for critically ill patients. There are currently no recommendations to measure specific substrate utilization or to adapt nutrition accordingly.

Methods: In this retrospective longitudinal study, we analyzed results of 316 simultaneous measurements of indirect calorimetry (IC) and urinary urea nitrogen (UUN) in 191 mechanically ventilated, critically ill patients, admitted to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) in a tertiary medical center.

A novel tool to predict lymph node metastasis in patients with prostate cancer based on clinical and Ga-PSMA PET/CT parameters.

Can Urol Assoc J

December 2024

Department of Urology, Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Introduction: We sought to develop a model that predicts lymph node invasion (LNI) in patients with intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer incorporating preoperative clinical and Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PSMA PET/CT) parameters.

Methods: A cohort of 413 consecutive patients diagnosed with prostate cancer who underwent Ga- PSMA PET/CT prior to radical prostatectomy from 2015-2020 was used to develop and validate the model. The cohort was split into a learning (70%) and a validation group (30%).

"Room of Horrors": A Proof-of-Concept Simulation Model for Error Reduction Training in the Emergency Department.

Pediatr Emerg Care

December 2024

From the Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Dana-Dwek Children's Hospital, affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University.

Objective: This pilot study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a "room of horrors" (RoH) simulation in identifying patient safety threats in a pediatric emergency department (PED) and to evaluate health care workers' (HCWs') perceptions of the experience.

Methods: We developed an RoH simulation featuring 25 potential safety hazards derived from actual PED incidents and "never events." The teams of physicians and nurses who participated in the simulation identified as many hazards as they could within a 10-minute window followed by a debriefing session during which errors were corrected and missed hazards were pointed out.

Venetoclax (Ven) plus hypomethylating agents are considered standard-of-care for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) judged ineligible for intensive chemotherapy (IC). Real-world studies complement clinical trials, since patterns of patient selection, treatment-exposure and post-remission management may vary. This prospective observational multi-center study included 209 newly diagnosed IC-ineligible patients with a median age 75 years (interquartile range, 71-81 years).

This study investigated whether the difference between endometrial thickness in the frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle and the preceding fresh stimulated cycle predicts clinical pregnancy in women with thin endometrium. A retrospective analysis of 335 cycles in 227 women (age < 43) with endometrium < 8 mm in the FET cycle was conducted. Endometrial thickness was assessed using the ratio (ET) and absolute difference (ET) between the maximal endometrial thickness measured during the stimulated IVF cycle and that measured in the FET cycle.

Bipedal locomotion requires body adaptation to maintain stability after encountering a transition to incline walking. A major part of this adaptation is reflected by adjusting walking speed. When transitioning to uphill walking, people exert more energy to counteract gravitational forces pulling them backward, while when transitioning to downhill walking people break to avoid uncontrolled acceleration.

Background: Recent literature suggests a trend toward a higher comorbidity burden in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, the impact of increased comorbidities on the cost-effectiveness of TKA is underexplored. This study aimed to compare the financial implications and perioperative outcomes of patients with and without a high comorbidity burden (HCB).

In a prospective, remote natural history study of 277 individuals with (60) and genetically at risk for (217) Parkinson's disease (PD), we examined interest in the return of individual research results (IRRs) and compared characteristics of those who opted for versus against the return of IRRs. Most ( = 180, 65%) requested sharing of IRRs with either a primary care provider, neurologist, or themselves. Among individuals without PD, those who requested sharing of IRRs with a clinician reported more motor symptoms than those who did not request any sharing (mean (SD) 2.

J Neurol Sci

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel; AI in Neurology Laboratory, Ruth and Bruce Rapaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion Institute of Technology, Haifa 3525408, Israel; Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) encephalitis is the most common type of viral encephalitis globally, but there is limited understanding of long-term mortality rates and influencing factors.
  • A retrospective study analyzed data from HSV-positive encephalitis patients over 23 years, finding that 55.31% of HSV-1 patients died during follow-up, with older age and cancer comorbidities significantly increasing mortality risk.
  • Key findings highlighted that older patients had a higher risk of death, and having cancer dramatically impacted mortality, with an optimal age cut-off of 63.29 years identified for predicting outcomes.
