Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) has been significant since ancient times, initially with animals, especially dogs, assisting in hunting and food gathering. Over time, this relationship evolved into domestication, companionship, and therapeutic roles in society. In urban areas, pet ownership is widespread, driven by companionship, therapeutic benefits, and social status.

Introduction: The effect of isotretinoin on inflammatory markers has been reported with conflicting results. No studies have been reported on the relationship between isotretinoin and lymphocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C] ratio (LHR), neutrophil/HDL-C ratio (NHR), or platelet/HDL-C ratio (PHR) in acne patients.

Objectives: We aimed to investigate how isotretinoin affects the inflammatory markers, including LHR, NHR, and PHR, in acne vulgaris patients.

Farm to fork applications: how vibrational spectroscopy can be used along the whole value chain?

Crit Rev Biotechnol

November 2024

Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI), The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

Vibrational spectroscopy is a nondestructive analysis technique that depends on the periodic variations in dipole moments and polarizabilities resulting from the molecular vibrations of molecules/atoms. These methods have important advantages over conventional analytical techniques, including (a) their simplicity in terms of implementation and operation, (b) their adaptability to on-line and on-farm applications, (c) making measurement in a few minutes, and (d) the absence of dangerous solvents throughout sample preparation or measurement. Food safety is a concept that requires the assurance that food is free from any physical, chemical, or biological hazards at all stages, from farm to fork.

Recent investigations showed the presence of meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) along the superior sagittal and transverse dural sinuses which drain both fluid and immune cells from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to the deep cervical lymph nodes. This study uses immunohistochemistry (IHC) and the Western Blot technique to show the presence of mLV accompanying the dorsal (superior sagittal, inferior sagittal, transverse, sigmoid, and straight) and basal (cavernous, sphenoparietal, superior, and inferior petrosal) dural sinuses in the human brain. Samples for IHC were obtained from dorsal and basal meningeal dural sinuses of 3 human cadavers and 3 autopsies.

Top cited articles about the stress urinary incontinence: A bibliometric analysis.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

December 2024

Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Tekirdağ, Turkey. Electronic address:

Objective: To produce a bibliographic source by compiling the most-cited articles about stress urinary incontinence to guide researchers for novel research topic ideas in urogynecology.

Study Design: We analyzed 200 most-cited articles (T200) between 1995-2022 by reviewing the Institution for Scientific Information (ISI) - Web of Science (WOS) and PubMed databases about the stress urinary incontinence. The time span-effect of publications was normalized by calculating average citations per item (ACI) index for each article.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how hemodialysis membranes affect DNA damage and repair in end-stage renal failure patients, focusing on gene expression involved in repairing oxidative damage.
  • The researchers measured the expression of specific repair genes in 20 ESRD patients before and after dialysis and compared it to 20 healthy individuals using real-time PCR methods.
  • Results showed no overall impact of the dialysis process on gene expression, but a significant decrease in PARP1 gene expression in ESRD patients indicates potential impairment in their DNA repair mechanisms, which could influence disease progression.

In this study, phycocyanin obtained from extract was used at various concentrations as a natural blue color source in toffee-type soft candy, and the effect of various storage temperatures (4, 20, and 40°C) on the color stability was investigated. In addition, main quality parameters, such as water activity, texture, and sensory analysis, were determined in the samples stored for 3 months at 20°C, and thus the effect of phycocyanin addition on the product appeal was studied. According to the results, the addition of phycocyanin powder did not significantly affect water activity ( > .

Loss of WWOX contributes to cisplatin resistance in triple-negative breast cancer cells by modulating miR-182 and miR-214.

Turk J Med Sci

October 2024

Department of Computer Sciences and Communication, Faculty of Computer Sciences, Østfold University College, Halden, Norway.

Background/aim: WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) loss frequently occurs in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). WWOX loss enhances cisplatin resistance in TNBC patients. Although WWOX loss has an effect on the selection of a DNA repair pathway that contributes to enhanced mutagenesis, the downstream expression changes in resistant cancer cells have not been fully explored.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two pain management techniques, erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and quadratus lumborum block (QLB), in patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy, focusing on reducing opioid use and pain levels.
  • Both ESPB and QLB significantly reduced opioid consumption and pain scores compared to a control group in the postoperative period, showing effectiveness as pain management strategies.
  • Although both techniques were beneficial, no significant differences were found in opioid usage or pain scores between ESPB and QLB groups, indicating that either method could be suitable for reducing opioid dependence after surgery.

New bismuth (III) complexes with acetophenone-4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone (L) and halogens (Cl and Br) in both bridging and terminal positions have been synthesized and structurally characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The pure complexes (Cl or Br) were found to be highly isostructural, which motivated our attempts to create solid solutions of these complexes. A series of such compounds was prepared using various procedures and stoichiometries.
