PPARα activation partially drives NAFLD development in liver-specific Hnf4a-null mice.

J Biochem

April 2023

Laboratory of Metabolism, Division of Molecular Science, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Gunma University, Kiryu, Gunma 376-8515, Japan.

HNF4α regulates various genes to maintain liver function. There have been reports linking HNF4α expression to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. In this study, liver-specific Hnf4a-deficient mice (Hnf4aΔHep mice) developed hepatosteatosis and liver fibrosis, and they were found to have difficulty utilizing glucose.

In the present study, we conducted a detailed evaluation of the effects of humidification on the quality of five types of commercial magnesium oxide (MgO) tablet formulations. When near-IR spectroscopy was performed, a peak derived from the first overtone of the stretching vibration of the hydroxyl group was observed at approximately 7200 cm in a humidified MgO tablet formulation. To visually evaluate the effect of this humidification, a mapping image was created using microscopic IR spectroscopy.

BMC Med Educ

January 2023

Department of Health Communication, School of Public Health, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-8655, Japan.

Background: Empathy for patients is now internationally accepted as one of the competencies of physicians for patient-centered medical practice and an essential component of medical education. Recently, "patient storytelling" has attracted attention in empathy education for medical students to understand patients' experiences, feelings, and perspectives. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate how patient storytelling enhanced undergraduate medical students' empathy in Japan to the extent that they sustained it for six months.

Cathepsin D Inhibits Angiogenesis in Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Acta Histochem Cytochem

December 2022

Graduate School of Medicine, International University of Health and Welfare, 4-3 Kozunomori, Narita, Chiba 286-8686, Japan.

Prolactin and growth hormone can acquire anti-angiogenic properties after undergoing proteolytic cleavage by Cathepsin D and bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP-1) into fragments known as vasoinhibins. Little is known about the effect of vasoinhibins on angiogenesis through the involvement of key cleavage enzymes Cathepsin D and BMP-1 in pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs, formerly pituitary adenomas). The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of action of Cathepsin D and BMP-1 on angiogenesis in PitNETs compared with that of pro-angiogenic factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2).

is the fruit of a cucurbitaceous vine endemic to China. Its extract has been used as a sweetener and exhibits various anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects mediated via its antioxidant properties. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the preventive or ameliorative effects of extract (SGE) on nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-like lesions induced in male Hsd: Sprague Dawley rats fed a choline-deficient, methionine-lowered, l-amino acid-defined diet for 13 weeks.

This study examined changes in physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), screen time, sleep, and executive function among Japanese preschoolers between COVID-19 pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, using cross-sectional and longitudinal data. Accelerometer data from 63 children aged 5-6 years were collected from three kindergartens in Tokyo, Japan, in late 2019 (pre-COVID-19). This was compared to the data of 49 children aged 5-6 years from the same kindergartens, collected in late 2020 (during COVID-19).

Direct Inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein by Peracetic Acid.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2022

Laboratory of Molecular Targeted Therapy, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tokyo University of Science, 2641 Yamazaki, Noda 278-8510, Chiba, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • - Peracetic acid (PAA) is an effective disinfectant against various pathogens, including different strains of SARS-CoV-2, but its action mechanism wasn't fully understood until now.
  • - Research shows that PAA not only suppressed infections from both the original Wuhan strain and its variants (Delta and Omicron) but also reduced overall viral load.
  • - The study revealed that PAA disrupts the interaction between the virus's spike protein and the ACE2 receptor by destabilizing the spike protein's structure, suggesting a strong disinfectant approach to combat SARS-CoV-2.

Introduction: Sensitive methods are necessary to identify the residual structure in an unfolded protein, which may be similar to the functionally native structure. Signal intensity in NMR experiments is useful for analyzing the line width for a dynamic structure; however, another contribution is contained.

Methods: Here, the signal-intensity difference along the sequence was used for probability to calculate the standard deviation.

Background & Aims: Few studies have examined the association between mortality and malnutrition diagnosed using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria for routine nutritional assessment; thus, this association is not well known. We aimed to clarify the association between GLIM-defined malnutrition and mortality in a large population of hospitalized patients.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled adult patients admitted to Aichi Medical University Hospital between April 2019 and March 2021, who underwent nutritional assessment using the GLIM criteria.

Several studies have suggested a strong interaction between the circadian clock and lipid metabolism in mammals. The circadian clock is driven by endogenous cyclic gene expression patterns, commonly referred to as clock genes, and transcription-translation negative feedback loops. Clock genes regulate the transcription of some lipid metabolism-related genes; however, the relationship between the circadian clock and triglyceride (TG) accumulation at the cellular level remains unclear.

Effects of febuxostat on delaying chronic kidney disease progression: a randomized trial in China.

Int Urol Nephrol

May 2023

Department of Nephrology, Tianjin First Center Hospital, No. 24 Fukang Road, Nankai District, Tianjin, 300192, China.

Background: A few studies have tested febuxostat for its usefulness in delaying chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression by treating hyperuricemia and results were controversial. Thus, we attempted to conduct a randomized controlled study using the Chinese population with advanced grade of CKD.

Methods: One hundred CKD patients in stages 3 and 4 with asymptomatic hyperuricemia from seven medical centers were included in this prospective randomized controlled study and assigned to the control and febuxostat group, the latter of which received febuxostat to titrate to achieve serum uric acid (SUA) < 6 mg/dL.

Adv Exp Med Biol

December 2022

Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Health Care and Medical Sports, Teikyo Heisei University, Tokyo, Japan.

Cerebral vasospasm and delayed cerebral ischaemia in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) are more likely to occur within the first two weeks of bleeding. Thus, conventional management involves absolute rest for two weeks. Recently, studies have reported on the possibility of early mobilisation after SAH; however, its safety has not been sufficiently evaluated.

Background: Post-evacuation return after mandatory hospital evacuation due to complicated disasters is often overlooked and not well-discussed.

Aims: In this study, we explored the factors which are related to the ease or difficulty of the post-evacuation return to Fukushima prefecture of psychiatric inpatients who had been evacuated to hospitals outside the prefecture because of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) and subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident.

Method: This retrospective cohort study included evacuated psychiatric hospital inpatients who were registered in the Matching Project for Community Transition (MPCT) and had been traced until July 31, 2019.
