Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) are common complications encountered in pregnancy that affect between 5% and 15% of pregnancies worldwide. Some studies have associated adherence to a diet with a high acid load with an increased risk of HDPs. This study investigates the association between Dietary Acid Load (DAL) and the incidence of preeclampsia, chronic hypertension (HTN), and gestational hypertension (GHTN).

Article Synopsis
  • - Various soft markers identified in fetal ultrasounds may indicate potential chromosomal abnormalities, but some can also be normal variations that resolve over time in pregnancy.
  • - A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of these ultrasonic soft markers in diagnosing chromosomal issues like Trisomy 21 and 18, by reviewing 10 relevant studies published before August 2023, which included over 18,500 cases.
  • - Results showed that Trisomy 21 and 18 were the most frequently linked to these soft markers, along with other chromosomal abnormalities, and indicated a higher chance of pathogenic copy number variations in fetuses with multiple soft markers present.

Background: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of obesity, overweight, and underweight in celiac disease (CD) at diagnosis before starting the Gluten-free diet (GFD).

Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science until July 2024 to find the cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that measured the body mass index (BMI) in CD patients at diagnosis. The risk of bias assessment was conducted using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment scale.

  • Measles, caused by the measles virus, remains a global health challenge despite the availability of an effective vaccine, with a need for better methods to assess community immunity.* -
  • The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is the standard immunity test but often fails to detect low antibody levels, while the more accurate plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) is impractical for regular use.* -
  • This study validated the focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT) as a reliable alternative to PRNT, demonstrating that FRNT provides similar sensitivity and perfect correlation in identifying protective antibodies compared to PRNT.*

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a powerful neuroimaging technique that provides valuable insights into the microstructure and connectivity of the brain. By measuring the diffusion of water molecules along neuronal fibers, DTI allows the visualization and study of intricate networks of neural pathways. DTI is a noise-sensitive method, where a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) results in significant errors in the estimated tensor field.

The effects of green coffee bean extract on blood pressure and heart rate: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Diabetes Metab Syndr

September 2024

The Persian Gulf Tropical Medicine Research Center, The Persian Gulf Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, Bushehr, Iran. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the effects of green coffee bean extract (GCBE) on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and heart rate (HR) in adults, finding mixed results in previous literature.
  • Out of 1624 records, 10 studies with 563 participants showed that GCBE significantly reduced both SBP and DBP, but had no notable impact on heart rate.
  • The researchers concluded that while GCBE may help reduce hypertension, it does not significantly affect heart rate, especially in women.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) and the risk of lung cancer (LC) in an Iranian population.
  • Researchers conducted interviews and dietary assessments with over 600 lung cancer patients and 3,400 healthy controls across 10 provinces in Iran.
  • Results show that higher dTAC, measured by FRAP and TRAP scores, correlates with a lower risk of lung cancer, with consistent findings across different demographic and lifestyle groups.

Background: According to epidemiological studies, unhealthy dietary patterns and lifestyle lead to rising obesity and cardiometabolic diseases in Iran. Hybrid techniques were used to identify a dietary pattern characterized by fiber, folic acid, and carotenoid intake due to their association with cardiometabolic risk factors such as anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, lipid profile, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor (PAI), Homeostatic Model Assessment Index (HOMA Index), cardiometabolic index (CMI), and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1). So, the objective of the recent study is to compare the reduced-rank regression (RRR) and partial least-squares (PLS) approaches to principal component analysis (PCA) for estimating diet-cardiometabolic risk factor correlations in Iranian obese women.

Emerging immunologic approaches as cancer anti-angiogenic therapies.

Clin Transl Oncol

September 2024

Mass General Cancer Center, Department of Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Targeting tumor angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels supporting cancer growth and spread, has been an intense focus for therapy development. However, benefits from anti-angiogenic drugs like bevacizumab have been limited by resistance stemming from activation of compensatory pathways. Recent immunotherapy advances have sparked interest in novel immunologic approaches that can induce more durable vascular pruning and overcome limitations of existing angiogenesis inhibitors.
