Article Synopsis
  • Research on ischemic heart disease (IHD) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is limited, prompting this study to explore its incidence, mortality, and associated risk factors in the region.
  • Utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019, the analysis revealed about 2.55 million new cases of IHD in MENA, with a slight decrease in incidence rates from 1990 to 2019.
  • Despite the overall decrease in prevalence and incidence of IHD, the region's progress is lagging behind the global average, particularly among older populations and more significantly affecting men than women.

The dose-dependent neuroprotective effect of norepinephrine in improving memory retrieval in an experimental model of multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Brain Res Bull

April 2024

Department of Food and Drug Administration, Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, Yazd, Iran; Department of Pharmacology, Brain and Spinal Injury Repair Research Center, Tehran University of Medical Science, Tehran, Iran. Electronic address:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered an immune-mediated inflammatory disorder that causes cognitive impairments by damaging the hippocampal tissue. Conversely, norepinephrine (NEP) has anti-inflammatory and re-myelinating properties, which improve cognitive impairments. The aim of this study was to assess the neuroprotective effects of NEP on learning and memory disorders in an experimental animal model of MS.

Background And Aims: Patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) experience an annoying feeling without clinical evidence of any mucosal lesion. Deficiency or excess of micronutrients is a common feature in secondary BMS. There is limited knowledge among oral healthcare providers regarding the significance of micronutrients in oral health, so the current review focuses on the critical role of these elements in oral health implications as secondary BMS.

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the first-line medical management with Methotrexate (MTX) in the treatment of patients with stable tubal Ectopic Pregnancies (EPs) and varying ranges of Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-HCG) levels.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we reviewed the medical records of a total of 184 patients with the diagnosis of tubal EP, who received MTX as their first-line treatment. Patients with a baseline β-HCG< 4800 mIU/mL received single-dose MTX (n = 136) and those with an initial β-HCG≥ 4800 mIU/mL underwent the double-dose MTX regimen (n = 48).

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the prevalence of substance and opium use among adult residents in Tehran, finding a 5.6% overall prevalence, with 95.8% of users favoring opium.
  • It involved 8,259 participants and discovered that substance use was significantly more common in males (10.5% vs. 0.5% in females).
  • The research identified male gender, alcohol intake, and smoking as key risk factors for opium use, suggesting that healthcare providers can use this data for preventive strategies.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to optimize formulation variables and investigate the characteristics of fluticasone propionate (FP)-loaded mixed polymeric micelles, which were composed of depolymerized chitosan-stearic acid copolymer (DC-SA) in combination with either tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate or dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine for pulmonary drug delivery.

Methods: A D-optimal design was employed for the optimization procedure, considering lipid/ polymer ratio, polymer concentration, drug/ polymer ratio, and lipid type as independent variables. Dependent variables included particle size, polydispersion index, zeta potential, drug encapsulation efficiency, and loading efficiency of the polymeric micelles.

Introduction: This study investigates the long-term effectiveness and safety of endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition commonly caused by dysfunctional valves in the venous circulation system.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, patients underwent EVLT and were followed up for successive short intervals and one last time after a median duration of 9-year postprocedural. Pre- and postprocedure duplex ultrasound was used to assess changes in the great saphenous vein (GSV) diameter, reflux, and saphenofemoral junction incompetence.

Inflammation and oxidative stress in epileptic children: from molecular mechanisms to clinical application of ketogenic diet.

Rev Neurosci

June 2024

Network of Interdisciplinarity in Neonates and Infants (NINI), Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN), Dr. Qarib St, Tehran 1419733151, Iran.

Childhood epilepsy affects up to 1 % of children. It has been shown that 30 % of patients are resistant to drug treatments, making further investigation of other potential treatment strategies necessary. One such approach is the ketogenic diet (KD) showing promising results and potential benefits beyond the use of current antiepileptic drugs.

Article Synopsis
  • A modified MR scoring system was developed to assess adnexal masses using early phase postcontrast MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging, providing an alternative where dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI is unavailable.
  • In a study of 245 patients with 340 adnexal masses, the modified system showed 87.3% sensitivity and 94.6% specificity, and an overall accuracy of 92.1%.
  • Although the modified scoring system is less sensitive than the ADNEX MR scoring system, both have comparable accuracy, indicating potential effectiveness in imaging centers lacking DCE capabilities.
