Background Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that alters the alveolar bone structure, requiring treatment ranging from non-surgical to surgical periodontal therapies based on its severity. Surgical interventions, such as the modified Widman flap procedure and the open flap technique combined with methods like platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), guided tissue regeneration (GTR), and bone grafts, aim to reduce periodontal pockets and regenerate lost tissues. The presence of pathogenic bacteria and the absence of beneficial bacteria contribute to periodontitis, with probiotics-live microorganisms that offer health benefits emerging as a promising adjunct in periodontal therapy.

Background Radiopacity is a critical property for root canal sealers as it allows for the assessment of the material's placement and quality within the root canal system on radiographic images. The study aimed to evaluate the radiopacity of calcium silicate-based and resin-based materials using direct digital radiography, employing an aluminium step wedge according to American National Standards Institute/International Organization for Standardization (ANSI/ISO) standard protocols for testing the radiopacity of root canal sealers. This study seeks to determine the effectiveness of these materials in meeting the required standards for clinical use.

Evaluation of microleakage of mineral trioxide aggregate and biodentine as apical barriers in simulated young permanent teeth.

BMC Oral Health

September 2024

Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Saveetha Dental College & Hospitals, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, 600077, India.

Background: Apexification is a procedure that promotes apical closure by forming mineralized tissue in the apex region of a nonvital young permanent tooth. Calcium silicate-based cement like Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine are commonly employed as apical barriers to facilitate this process. Microleakage, defined as the leakage along the junction between the canal wall and filling material, is a crucial aspect to assess in MTA and Biodentine applications as apical barriers, as it directly impacts the prevention of bacterial seepage and maintenance of structural integrity.

Article Synopsis
  • Traditional pulp testing relies on neural responses, which limits its effectiveness; this study creates a modified dental sensor using a finger pulse oximeter to evaluate tooth vitality through oxygen saturation levels.
  • Involving 300 children, the study categorized 600 teeth into groups and measured systemic and pulp oxygen saturation levels, finding significant differences in oxygen saturation among the various groups.
  • The custom pulse oximeter effectively measured oxygen saturation in teeth, showing it can accurately assess pulp vitality across different developmental stages, making it a valuable tool in pediatric dentistry.
