Nonpathogenic effective bacterial hydrocarbon degraders, Rhodococcus ruber S103, Mycolicibacterium parafortuitum J101 and Mycolicibacterium austroafricanum Y502, were isolated from mixed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-enriched river sediments. They possessed broad substrate specificities toward various PAHs and aliphatic compounds as sole carbon sources. These strains exhibited promising characteristics, including biosurfactant production, high cell hydrophobicity, biofilm formation and no antagonistic interactions, and contained genes encoding hydrocarbon-degrading enzymes.

Assessment of the economic recycling potential of a glycolysis treatment of rigid polyurethane foam waste: A case study from Thailand.

This research assessed the economic feasibility of recovering polyol from rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) waste, collected from dismantled, discarded refrigerators, by a single-phase glycolysis recycling process using domestic crude glycerol (a byproduct of biodiesel production) as a transesterification agent. The study, conducted in Thailand, took into account benefits from the added value of the recovered product, the investment and related operating costs of the process, demand (the need for the recovered product) and supply (the amount of RPUF waste). The results showed that the production of recovered polyol from RPUF waste is economically feasible, with a net present value of 1,113,018 USD, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 22.

This study aimed to develop a rapid, sensitive PCR-dipstick DNA chromatography assay that could be read by eye for multiplex and semiquantitative analysis of plaque bacteria. Parallel oligonucleotides were immobilized on a dipstick strip for multiplex analysis of target DNA sequences of the caries-associated bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Scardovia wiggsiae, Actinomyces species, and Veillonella parvula.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an important technology to amplify a single copy or a few copies of DNA segment in genomic DNAs, visualizing the segment as DNA fragment. Thus, PCR is frequently used in various examinations such as detection of bacteria and fungi in the food industry. Here, we report a simple and sensitive method for detection of PCR products using single-strand tag sequence and hybridization of the tag sequence to the complementary tag sequence immobilized on solid material (STH).
