Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Soil and Groundwater Pollution Control, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China.

Spent LiNiCoMnO (x + y + z = 1) and polyethylene terephthalate are major solid wastes due to the growing Li-ion battery market and widespread plastic usage. Here we propose a synergistic pyrolysis strategy to recover valuable metals by thermally treating LiNiCoMnO and polyethylene terephthalate. With polyethylene terephthalate assistance, LiNiCoMnO decomposes at 400 °C, and fully converts to LiCO, MnO, and Ni-Co alloy at 550 °C within 30 min, using a 1.

Accurate assessment and quantification of neoangiogenesis associated with breast cancer could be potentially used to improve the sensitivity and specificity of non-invasive diagnosis, as well as predict outcomes and monitor treatment effects. In this study, we adapted an emerging technology, namely diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), to image microvascular blood flow in breast tissues and evaluate the potential for discriminating between benign and malignant lesions. A custom-made DCT system was designed for breast blood flow imaging, with both the source-detector array and reconstruction algorithm optimized to ensure precise imaging of breast blood flow.

Hepatic steatosis, characterized by excessive lipid accumulation in the liver, can be ameliorated by autophagy activation. Polygoni Cuspidati rhizome et Radix (PCRR), traditionally used to treat atherosclerosis, hepatitis, and gallstones, has recently demonstrated anti-steatotic effects in the liver. However, the active compounds and underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Sprint interval training (SIT) is a potent exercise strategy to enhance athletes' anaerobic capacity in a time-efficient manner. This study aimed to investigate the impact of low-volume, court-based SIT on the anaerobic capacity and sport-specific performance in competitive tennis players. Twenty-four competitive collegiate tennis players were randomly assigned to either the SIT group (n = 12; three sessions per week of court-based repeated-sprint training) or the traditional endurance training (ET) group (n = 12; three sessions per week of 45-min continuous treadmill running, n = 12) for a 6-weeks intervention.

Unlabelled: Skin diseases have become serious issues to human health and affect one-third of the world's population according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). These consist of internal (endogenous) and external (exogenous) factors referring to genetics, hormones, and the body's immune system, as well as environmental situations, UV radiation, or environmental pollution respectively. Generally, Western Medicines (WMs) are usually treated with topical creams or strong medications for skin diseases that help superficially, and often do not treat the root cause.

Diclofenac (DLF), a widely recognized non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a broad-spectrum sulfonamide antibiotic, are commonly prescribed medications that have raised concerns as significant contributors to pharmaceutical pollution in natural ecosystems despite their clinical effectiveness. This study investigates the potential phytoremediation pathways for these two drugs in plant systems by tracking and quantifying the fate of the parent compounds and their metabolites in Arabidopsis thaliana using cell and seedling cultures. Results indicated significant differences in the dissipation of DLF according to the treatment and time interaction within the cell cultures.

In Situ Synthesis of High-Entropy (Oxy)Hydroxides Via Electrochemical Reconfiguration As Catalysts For Efficient Water Oxidation.

November 2024

Laboratory of Advanced Materials and Catalytic Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian, 116024, China.

Surface reconstruction plays a pivotal role in enhancing the activity of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), particularly in terms of the structural transformation from metal oxides to (oxy)hydroxides. Herein, a novel (oxy)hydroxide (FeCoNiCuMoOOH) with high entropy is developed by the electrochemical reconstitution of corresponding oxide (FeCoNiCuMoO). Significantly, the FeCoNiCuMoOOH exhibits much higher OER electrocatalytic activity and durability with an overpotential as low as 201 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm, and with a Tafel slope of 39.

Unlabelled: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive treatment for several diseases. It combines light energy with a photosensitizer (PS) to destroy the targeted cells or tissues. A PS itself is a non-toxic substance, but it becomes toxic to the target cells through the activation of light at a specific wavelength.

Large-scale hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting still remains as a critical challenge due to the severe catalyst degradation during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media. In this study, we investigate the structural impacts on catalyst degradation behaviors using three iridium-based oxides, namely SrIrO, SrIrO, and SrIrO as model catalysts. These Ir oxides possess different connection configurations of [IrO] octahedra units in their structure.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech), No. 1, Sec. 3, Zhongxiao E. Rd, Taipei 10608, Taiwan.

In recent years, inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) have attracted increasing attention as potential theranostic agents in the field of oncology. Photothermal therapy (PTT) is a minimally invasive technique that uses nanoparticles to produce heat from light to kill cancer cells. PTT requires two essential elements: a photothermal agent (PTA) and near-infrared (NIR) radiation.

Leaping Supercapacitor Performance via a Flash-Enabled Graphene Photothermal Coating.

Small

September 2024

Centre for Atomaterials and Nanomanufacturing, RMIT University, Melbourne, VIC, 3000, Australia.

Elevating the working temperature delivers a simple and universal approach to enhance the energy storage performances of supercapacitors owing to the fundamental improvements in ion transportation kinetics. Among all heating methods, introducing green and sustainable photothermal heating on supercapacitors (SCs) is highly desired yet remains an open challenge, especially for developing an efficient and universal photothermal heating strategy that can be generally applied to arbitrary SC devices. Flash-enabled graphene (FG) absorbers are produced through a simple and facile flash reduction process, which can be coated on the surface of any SC devices to lift their working temperature via a photothermal effect, thus, improving their overall performance, including both power and energy densities.

With a close pathogenetic resemblance to human diabetes, canine Diabetes Mellitus, a chronic metabolic disease featuring abnormally high blood sugar levels, is increasing in prevalence worldwide. Unlike humans, canine glycemic control requires life-long insulin injections and dietary control in most cases, thereby jeopardizing diabetic dogs' quality of life and increasing the difficulty of disease control. While many research studies have focused on elucidating the relationship between the canine gut microbiome and diseases, there is currently no research on the subject of diabetes mellitus in dogs.
