Despite the significant medical advances which have taken place in the last decades, acute diarrhoea cases remain a public health issue of major significance, with gastroenteritis agents being associated with severe symptoms in adults and high morbidity in infants and children. Regarding rotaviruses, while children are the predominant victims of rotavirus infection, adults (often caretakers or parents of these children) may experience the same symptoms of fever, vomiting, and non-bloody diarrhoea. Three different routine schemes for the detection of rotaviruses in archived stool samples were evaluated in terms of diagnostic performance.

The incorporation of aromatic plants of Lamiaceae family (oregano, thyme, and Satureja) in a wheat bread was investigated for the effect on the total phenolics, the profile of phenolics, and their free radical scavenging activities. In addition, the influence on dough and bread quality characteristics such as color, gas cells structure, bread texture, degree of staling, and acceptability to consumers was studied. The volume of the fortified breads with dried aromatic plants was slightly decreased and their crumbs were firmer and darker than that of the control bread, yet sensory testing panelists scored them as more aromatic and better tasting.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQ8 transdimer (HLA-DQA1*0501/DQB1*0302) confers exceptionally high risk in autoimmune diabetes. However, little is known about HLA-DQ8 transdimer-restricted CD4 T cell recognition, an event crucial for triggering HLA-DQ8 transdimer-specific anti-islet immunity. Here, we report a high degree of epitope overlap and T cell promiscuity between susceptible HLA-DQ8 and HLA-DQ8 transdimer.

Calcium magnesium silicate glasses could be suggested for the synthesis of scaffolds for hard tissue regeneration, as they present a high residual glassy phase, high hardness values and hydroxyapatite-forming ability. The use of trace elements in the human body, such as Cu, could improve the biological performance of such glasses, as Cu is known to play a significant role in angiogenesis. Nano-bioceramics are preferable compared to their micro-scale counterparts, because of their increased surface area, which improves both mechanical properties and apatite-forming ability due to the increased nucleation sites provided, their high diffusion rates, reduced sintering time or temperature, and high mechanical properties.

Background: Identifying molecular biomarkers characteristic of ischemic stroke has the potential to aid in distinguishing stroke cases from stroke mimicking symptoms, as well as advancing the understanding of the physiological changes that underlie the body's response to stroke. This study uses machine learning-based analysis of gene co-expression to identify transcription patterns characteristic of patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Methods: Mutual information values for the expression levels among 13,243 quantified transcripts were computed for blood samples from 82 stroke patients and 68 controls to construct a co-expression network of genes (separately) for stroke and control samples.
