Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.

Acute sprains and ruptures of the lateral ankle ligaments are the most common injuries of the ankle joint. They are often related to sporting activity and predominantly affect individuals under 40 years old. Lateral ligament injuries occur due to supination trauma.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, many patients have reported chronic fatigue and severe post-exertional malaise, with symptoms similar to those of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). The accumulation of agonistic receptor autoantibodies targeting beta-adrenergic (β1 and β2) and muscarinic (M3 and M4) neurotransmitter receptors may play a crucial role in the pathomechanism of both ME/CFS and post-COVID conditions. Therapeutic apheresis has been suggested as an effective treatment option for alleviating and mitigating symptoms in this desperate group of patients.

Microbial synthesis of this ester from sugar-rich waste as an alternative is an aerobic process. Ethyl acetate is highly volatile and therefore stripped with the exhaust gas from the bioreactor which enables in situ product recovery.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a vital device to examine the electrical activities of the heart. It is useful for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, which often manifest themselves through alterations in the ECG signals' characteristics. These alterations are primarily observed in the signals' key components: the Q, R, S, T, and P peaks.

The treatment landscape for metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) has been extended by another phase 3 randomized control trial (ARANOTE) demonstrating favorable outcomes of a doublet therapy combining the androgen receptor pathway inhibitor (ARPI) darolutamide with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) over ADT monotherapy. Owing to differences in trial designs, patient enrollment, and most notably different control treatment regimens, we hereby present an updated network meta-analysis (NMA) embedding the doublet therapy with darolutamide within the current treatment regimens. In NMA-derived ranking, darolutamide and ADT showed similar oncological efficacy to the already known doublet therapies for progression-free survival (p = 0.

Background: Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized melanoma treatment, but the high number of non-responders still emphasizes the need for improvement of therapy. One potential avenue for enhancing anti-tumor treatment is through the modulation of coagulation and platelet activity. Both have been found to play an important role in the tumor microenvironment, tumor growth and metastasis.

We use hybrid molecular dynamics-multiparticle collision dynamics (MD-MPCD) simulations to investigate the influence of chain stiffness on the transport of nanoparticles (NPs) through solutions of semiflexible ring polymers. The NPs exhibit subdiffusive dynamics on short time scales before transitioning to normal diffusion at longer times. The terminal NP diffusivity decreases with increasing ring stiffness, similar to the behavior observed in solutions of semiflexible linear chains.

Patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) who seek treatment show highly variable outcomes. A precision medicine approach with biomarkers responsive to new treatments is warranted to overcome this limitation. Promising biomarkers relate to prefrontal control mechanisms that are severely disturbed in AUD.

Aim: There are various receptors that mediate intranasal trigeminal sensations. However, few studies compare the response patterns across different receptor activations.
Methods: We recorded negative mucosal potentials (NMPs) in 24 healthy participants and event-related potentials (ERPs) in 17 participants during exposure to five odors that trigger trigeminal sensations and one olfactory stimulus.

Unlabelled: In 2022, over 1,000,000 people from Ukraine fled to Germany, mostly women and children. The aim of this study was to determine health status and socio-demographic background of Ukrainian refugee minors in Germany and to compare that to German minors. In this study, Ukrainian refugees of all ages, who voluntarily made contact with the study centres via flyers or refugee shelters, were interviewed with the help of trained interpreters from 09-12/2022.

In acute crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, scientific questions need to be addressed quickly in order to protect the health of the population and to maintain the function of the healthcare system. The prevailing urgency and the large number of issues to be addressed, combined with the limitation of time, personnel, or monetary resources make prioritization indispensable. In the COVID-19 Evidence Ecosystem (CEOsys) project initiated by the University Medicine Network (NUM), a procedure for the rapid prioritization of questions was used specifically for evidence syntheses and clinical guideline recommendations, which was further developed in the follow-up project PREparedness and Pandemic Response in Germany (PREPARED).

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) continues to pose profound challenges within the field of oncology due to its notorious resistance to existing therapies and constant high mortality rates. The recent emergence of three-dimensional patient-derived organoid (PDO) models marks a significant advancement, opening new avenues for exploring cancer biology and assessing therapeutic approaches.
Aims: The aim of this study focuses on the innovative use of Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy to analyze PDAC organoids, thus illuminating their biochemical intricacies.

In the present study, we aimed to investigate how acute stress exerts its heterogeneous effects. Based on biophysical network models, we hypothesized that acute stress would improve occipital-mediated ultra-short-term and to a lesser degree affect occipital- and frontal-mediated short-term and working, and impairs hippocampal-mediated long-term memory processes and their respective behavioral measures. To test this, 111 healthy individuals (57 female) underwent both the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and a control test.

The chemistry of the on-water surface, characterized by enhanced reactivity, distinct selectivity, and confined reaction geometry, offers significant potential for chemical and materials syntheses. However, the utilization of on-water surface synthesis is currently limited by the requirement for a stable air-water interface, which restricts its broader synthetic applications. In this work, we present a approach that mimics on-water surface chemistry using micelles.
