Prevalence of Endoscopically Curable Low-Risk Cancer Among Large (≥20 mm) Nonpedunculated Polyps in the Right Colon.

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol

July 2024

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia; Westmead Clinical School of Medicine, University of Sydney, Sydney, Australia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is being considered for treating large nonpedunculated colorectal polyps (LNPCPs) to manage potential low-risk cancers, but its effectiveness in the right colon is unclear.
  • A study analyzed over 3,000 cases, finding that only 2.6% of patients who underwent endoscopic resection (ER) had cancers, with just 0.78% being classified as low-risk.
  • The results suggest that a universal ESD approach for right colon LNPCPs may not significantly improve patient outcomes due to the low prevalence of treatable low-risk cancers.

Early detection of functional decline, a major risk among hospitalized older adults, can facilitate interventions that could significantly reduce it. We aimed to examine the contribution of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in predicting Hospitalization Associated Functional Decline (HAFD) among older adults, able to independently ambulate before admission. We used a cross-sectional study design; a total of 310 older adults (age ≥ 65) hospitalized in internal medicine wards between December 2018 and August 2020 were included; exclusion criteria were inability to ambulate, a diagnosis restricting mobility, hospitalization for end-of-life care, or impaired cognition.

Proteasome activity is crucial for cellular integrity, but how tissues adjust proteasome content in response to catabolic stimuli is uncertain. Here, we demonstrate that transcriptional coordination by multiple transcription factors is required to increase proteasome content and activate proteolysis in catabolic states. Using denervated mouse muscle as a model system for accelerated proteolysis in vivo, we reveal that a two-phase transcriptional program activates genes encoding proteasome subunits and assembly chaperones to boost an increase in proteasome content.

The personalisation of finite element models is an important problem in the biomechanical fields where subject-specific analyses are fundamental, particularly in studying soft tissue mechanics. The personalisation includes the choice of the constitutive law of the model's material, as well as the choice of the material parameters. In vivo identification of the material properties of soft tissues is challenging considering the complex behaviour of soft tissues that are, among other things, non-linear hyperelastic and heterogeneous.

Management of Melasma: Laser and Other Therapies-Review Study.

J Clin Med

March 2024

Department of Dermatology, Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa 3109601, Israel.

Melasma is a commonly occurring pigmented skin condition that can significantly affect one's appearance, described as symmetric hyperpigmentation that presents as irregular brown to gray-brown macules on various facial areas, such as the cheeks, forehead, nasal bridge, and upper lip, along with the mandible and upper arms. Due to its complex pathogenesis and recurrent nature, melasma management is challenging and the outcomes following treatment are not always deemed satisfactory. Solely treating hyperpigmentation may prove ineffective unless paired with regenerative techniques and photoprotection, since one of the main reasons for recurrence is sun exposure.
