Article Synopsis
  • Psychiatric patients have a shorter life expectancy than the general population, partly due to medical, behavioral, and social factors, with venous thromboembolism (VTE) being a significant concern.
  • VTE occurs more frequently in psychiatric patients—around 2 to 3 times higher than in the general population—due to factors like metabolic issues, medications, and genetic predispositions.
  • Addressing the elevated risk of VTE through better risk assessment and preventive measures is crucial to improving health outcomes for these individuals.

Medical Oncology Department, Program in Solid Tumours, CIMA, Cancer Center Clínica Universidad de Navarra, Madrid, and Grupo Español de Investigación en Cancer ginecológicO (GEICO), Madrid, 28027, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the cost differences in managing hematologic adverse events (AEs) for the individualized starting dose (ISD) versus the fixed starting dose (FSD) of niraparib from a US payer perspective.
  • Data from a phase III trial provided AE occurrence rates, and costs were calculated based on 2020 adjustments from a healthcare database.
  • Results showed that managing AEs was significantly cheaper with ISD ($6744.93) compared to FSD ($12,987.71), suggesting ISD not only cuts costs but also improves patient safety.

Center of Excellence for Interstitial Lung Diseases, Tel Aviv Medical Center, Tel Aviv University, Israel; Institute of Pulmonary Medicine, Tel Aviv Medical Center, Tel Aviv University, Israel. Electronic address:

Background: The radiologic criteria of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) guidelines focus on four HP compatible features (HPCF) in high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT): ground glass opacities, mosaic attenuation, air-trapping, and centrilobular nodules. However, evidence to support these criteria are limited.

Methods: Consecutive interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients who underwent HRCT between 2016 and 2021 in three medical centers were included.

Article Synopsis
  • Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) encephalitis is the most common type of viral encephalitis globally, but there is limited understanding of long-term mortality rates and influencing factors.
  • A retrospective study analyzed data from HSV-positive encephalitis patients over 23 years, finding that 55.31% of HSV-1 patients died during follow-up, with older age and cancer comorbidities significantly increasing mortality risk.
  • Key findings highlighted that older patients had a higher risk of death, and having cancer dramatically impacted mortality, with an optimal age cut-off of 63.29 years identified for predicting outcomes.

Utilization patterns of glucagon like Peptide-1 receptor agonists prior to bariatric and metabolic surgery: a multicenter study.

Surg Obes Relat Dis

October 2024

Department of General Surgery, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Ramat Gan, Israel; Affiliated with the School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • Glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists (G1RA) are becoming popular among overweight or obese patients for weight loss, but their effects on those seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) haven't been thoroughly studied.
  • In a study across five MBS centers in Israel, 63% of candidates had a history of G1RA use, with Liraglutide and Semaglutide being the most common, leading to an average weight loss of 5.38 kg over about 19 weeks.
  • However, many patients faced gastrointestinal side effects, with over 95% discontinuing the medication due to insufficient weight loss or adverse effects, highlighting the need for more research in this area.

Persistent neutrophilic inflammation is a central feature in both the pathogenesis and progression of bronchiectasis. Neutrophils release neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs), such as neutrophil elastase (NE), cathepsin G and proteinase 3. When chronically high levels of free NSP activity exceed those of protective antiproteases, structural lung destruction, mucosal-related defects, further susceptibility to infection and worsening of clinical outcomes can occur.

Article Synopsis
  • Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver disease where the immune system attacks liver cells, treated primarily with glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive drugs like azathioprine or MMF.
  • A study investigated the risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in a large cohort of AIH patients over two decades, finding that NHL incidence was significantly higher than in the general population.
  • The study revealed that older patients (45 and up) were more affected, especially within the first seven years post-AIH diagnosis, but no link was found between NHL risk and the specific treatment drug used.

Differential neuromotor control of the vertical and longitudinal genioglossus muscle fibers: An overlooked tongue retractor.

Respir Physiol Neurobiol

January 2025

Rappaport School of Medicine, Technion Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel; Respiratory Unit, Bnai-Zion Medical Center, Haifa, Israel. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of the genioglossus (GG) muscle in tongue movement during breathing, specifically focusing on the anterior fibers and their EMG activity during wakefulness and sleep.
  • Results showed that electrical stimulation of the anterior GG fibers caused tongue retraction, while the longitudinal fibers were responsible for protrusion.
  • The findings reveal distinct control mechanisms for the anterior GG compared to the protrusive fibers, suggesting that treatments for obstructive sleep apnea should avoid stimulating the retractor fibers of the GG.

Delirium is often the first symptom of incipient acute illness or complications and must therefore be detected promptly. Nevertheless, routine screening for delirium in acute care hospital wards is often inadequate. We recently implemented a simple, user-friendly delirium screening test (RMA) that can be administered during ward rounds and routine nursing care.

Article Synopsis
  • - Chronic airway inflammation is a major factor in bronchiectasis, influenced by neutrophils that release harmful proteins called neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) in both cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF conditions.
  • - There’s an imbalance between NSPs and their counteracting proteins in patients with CF and non-CF bronchiectasis, but effective treatments targeting NSPs are currently lacking.
  • - Even with new CFTR modulator therapies improving outcomes for cystic fibrosis patients, airway inflammation remains a problem, highlighting the need for new treatment strategies focused on managing neutrophilic inflammation.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with chronic lung disease (CLD) is both common and underrecognised. The presence of PH in the setting of lung disease has been consistently shown to be associated with worse outcomes. Recent epidemiological studies have advanced understanding of the heterogeneity of this patient population and shown that defining both the specific type of CLD as well as the severity of PH ( deeper phenotyping) is necessary to inform natural history and prognosis.
