Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology, The Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and Research Institute, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa 3109601, Israel. Electronic address:

Reproductive organs are among the most variable and rapidly evolving structures in the animal kingdom, probably due to sexual selection. In insects, the diverse morphology of male genitalia is often one of the few visible characteristics that can reliably distinguish closely related species, making it crucial for taxonomic classification. Consistent with this, males of the model organism Drosophila melanogaster and its closely related species display remarkable variations in genital morphology.

Chongqing Key Laboratory of Reproductive Health and Digital Medicine, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Chongqing General Hospital, School of Medicine, Chongqing University, Chongqing, 400044, People's Republic of China; College of Life Science and Laboratory Medicine, Kunming Medical University, Kunming, Yunnan, 650050, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI) following myocardial infarction, a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, is characterized by detrimental oxidative stress and inflammation. In response, we proposed an I/RI alleviation strategy using the intravenous injection of spherical selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) synthesized by a template method. Single-cell sequencing revealed these proposed SeNPs exhibited exceptional antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, disrupting the STAT1-ROS cycle, therefore preserving mitochondrial respiration and inhibiting caspase-mediated cardiomyocyte apoptosis.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) hold great promise for regenerative medicine thanks to their ability to self-renew and differentiate into somatic cells and the germline. ESCs correspond to pluripotent epiblast - the tissue from which the following three germ layers originate during embryonic gastrulation: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Importantly, ESCs can be induced to differentiate toward various cell types by varying culture conditions, which can be exploited for modeling of developmental processes such as gastrulation.

To protect the body from infections, the brain has evolved the ability to coordinate behavioral and immunological responses. The conditioned immune response (CIR) is a form of Pavlovian conditioning wherein a sensory (for example, taste) stimulus, when paired with an immunomodulatory agent, evokes aversive behavior and an anticipatory immune response after re-experiencing the taste. Although taste and its valence are represented in the anterior insular cortex and immune response in the posterior insula and although the insula is pivotal for CIRs, the precise circuitry underlying CIRs remains unknown.

Obstacles in quantifying A-to-I RNA editing by Sanger sequencing.

Methods Enzymol

January 2025

Faculty of Biology, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Technion City, Haifa, Israel. Electronic address:

Adenosine-to-Inosine (A-to-I) RNA editing is the most prevalent type of RNA editing, in which adenosine within a completely or largely double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is converted to inosine by deamination. RNA editing was shown to be involved in many neurological diseases and cancer; therefore, detection of A-to-I RNA editing and quantitation of editing levels are necessary for both basic and clinical biomedical research. While high-throughput sequencing (HTS) is widely used for global detection of editing events, Sanger sequencing is the method of choice for precise characterization of editing site clusters (hyper-editing) and for comparing levels of editing at a particular site under different environmental conditions, developmental stages, genetic backgrounds, or disease states.

For most researchers, academic publishing serves two goals that are often misaligned-knowledge dissemination and establishing scientific credentials. While both goals can encourage research with significant depth and scope, the latter can also pressure scholars to maximize publication metrics. Commercial publishing companies have capitalized on the centrality of publishing to the scientific enterprises of knowledge dissemination and academic recognition to extract large profits from academia by leveraging unpaid services from reviewers, creating financial barriers to research dissemination, and imposing substantial fees for open access.

Hydration Effects Driving Network Remodeling in Hydrogels during Cyclic Loading.

ACS Macro Lett

January 2025

Materials Science and Engineering Department, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa 3200003, Israel.

In complex networks and fluids such as the extracellular matrix, the mechanical properties are substantially affected by the movement of polymers both part of and entrapped in the network. As many cells are sensitive to the mechanical remodeling of their surroundings, it is important to appreciate how entrapped polymers may inhibit or facilitate remodeling in the network. Here, we explore a molecular-level understanding of network remodeling in a complex hydrogel environment through successive compressive loading and the role that noninteracting polymers may play in a dynamic network.

Mastering the complexities of cancer nanomedicine with text mining, AI and automation.

J Control Release

January 2025

Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. Electronic address:

In this contribution to the Orations - New Horizons of the Journal of Controlled Release, I present a personal perspective on the complexities of cancer nanomedicine and the approaches to master them. This oration draws mainly from my lab's journey to explore three transformative approaches to master complexities in the field: (1) leveraging text mining to construct dynamic knowledge bases for hypothesis generation in cell-specific drug delivery, (2) introducing the concept of meta-synergy to further optimize and classify multi-drug combinations across dimensions such as chemical loading, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics (3) utilizing automation to accelerate nanoparticle discovery with advanced screening methodologies such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE). I argue that by embracing complexity in nanomedicine, we can manifest new therapeutic possibilities, paving the way for more effective, precise, and adaptive treatment strategies.
