Synechococcus is a significant primary producer in the oceans, coexisting with cyanophages, which are important agents of mortality. Bacterial resistance against phage infection is a topic of significant interest, yet little is known for ecologically relevant systems. Here we use exogenous gene expression and gene disruption to investigate mechanisms underlying intracellular resistance of marine Synechococcus WH5701 to the Syn9 cyanophage.

Hypothesis: Current models for receding contact angles of Cassie-Baxter state droplets on textured hydrophobic substrates are applicable only to a specific structural type, e.g., pillar (above which a droplet has isolated contact line and continuous liquid-vapor interface) or pore (continuous contact line and isolated liquid-vapor interface), signifying a lack of universality.

The tomography of photonic quantum states is key in quantum optics, impacting quantum sensing, computing, and communication. Conventional detectors are limited in their temporal and spatial resolution, hampering high-rate quantum communication and local addressing of photonic circuits. Here, we propose to utilize free electron-photon interactions for quantum state tomography, introducing electron homodyne detection with potential for femtosecond-temporal and nanometer-spatial resolutions.

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) are essential for optimizing the performance of supported metal catalysts by tuning the metal-oxide interface structures. This study explores the hydrogenation of CO to methanol over Cu-supported catalysts, focusing on the synergistic effects of strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) and oxygen vacancies introduced by the CO treatment to the catalysts on the catalytic performance. Cu nanoparticles were immobilized on Mg-Al layered double oxide (LDO) supports and modified with nitrate ions to promote oxygen vacancy generation.

Purpose: Retroverted uterus affects 15-20% of patients. While typically not a cause for concern, some studies suggest a relationship between a retroverted uterus and subfertility. Study objective was to investigate the association between uterine position and spontaneous conception rates, as well as potential risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes in nulliparous patients.

Animal morphogenesis, the development of an organism's body form, is commonly perceived as a directed and almost deterministic process. However, noise and stochastic fluctuations are ubiquitous in biological systems. The questions on the role of fluctuations in morphogenesis and what ensures the robustness of this process under noisy conditions remain elusive.

Context: Hydrogen storage in porous nanostructured compounds have recently attracted a lot of attention due to the fact that the underlying adsorption mechanism and thermodynamics provide suitable platform for room temperature adsorption and desorption of H molecules. This work reports the findings of a study on the reversible hydrogen storage capacities of Sc and Y decorated C fullerene, conducted using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The transition metal (TM) atoms, such as Sc and Y, are identified to attach to the C-C bridge position of the C fullerene through non-covalent closed-shell interactions.

As maxillofacial surgery becomes increasingly digitized and the transformative impact of pre-surgical scanning and computer simulation is recognized, this clinical paper presents an algorithm for the selection of interventions in severe congenital oligodontia with Angle class-III malocclusion (OCIII) utilizing such technologies. A complex, multifactorial condition with varying degrees of craniofacial involvement, OCIII is associated with edentulous facial appearance, mandibular prognathism and deep underbite, as well as malocclusion. Our methodology involves the integration of CBCT imaging, intra- and extra- oral scanning, and 3D planning with the assessment of bone volume, number of missing teeth, skeletal discrepancies, and patient compliance in the selection of suitable treatments.

This study reviewed the recovery of humic substances (HS) from anaerobic digestate of sludge as a potential fertilizer, focusing on the quantification of HS, the efficiency of HS recovery, and its interaction with pollutants. The potential pitfalls of current misunderstanding for HS quantification in sludge were pointed out. HS present in sludge showed potential to be used as a fertilizer, which solubilized insoluble phosphates for enhanced soil fertility.

Introduction: Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) revolutionized our understanding of tissue complexity in health and disease and revealed massive transcriptional dysregulation across placental cell classes in early-onset, but not late-onset preeclampsia (PE). However, the multinucleated syncytium is largely inaccessible to cell dissociation. Nuclei isolation and single-nuclei RNA-seq may be preferable in the placenta; not least considering compatibility with long-term tissue storage.

The ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS), driven by ubiquitin as a degradation signal, eliminates, in a highly specific manner, 'abnormal' proteins and proteins that completed their function. This process involves a hierarchical cascade of E1, E2, and E3 enzymes. The E3 ubiquitin ligases, act as specific receptors that bind their cognate substrates.

This retrospective cohort study aimed to define the optimal Regions of Homozygosity (ROH) size cut-offs for prediction of morbidity, based on 13 483 Chromosomal Microarray Analyses (CMA). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated, and area under the curve (AUC) was used to assess the predictive capability of total ROH percentage (TRPS), ROH number and ROH segment size in distinguishing between healthy (n=6,196) and affected (n=6,839) cohorts. The metrics were examined for telomeric and interstitial segments, distinct TRPS categories, and across different ancestral origins.

The standard polygraph, or lie detector, is limited by its reliance on average heart rate, subjective examiner interpretation, and the need for direct subject contact. Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) offers a promising contactless alternative, by using facial videos to extract heart rate variability (HRV). We introduce "LieRHRV," a remote lie detection algorithm based solely on extracted HRV parameters.

The Brain Tumor Group (BTG) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) conducts academic clinical trials and translational research to improve clinical management of patients with primary and secondary brain tumors. The EORTC BTG has traditionally played an important role in providing evidence and thus advancing the field, albeit with a main focus on radiotherapy and pharmacotherapy in gliomas. Although examples of well-designed neuro-oncological surgical trials can be found, evidence in surgical neuro-oncology predominantly includes data from uncontrolled prospective series or retrospective cohorts.

Weyl semimetals are a novel class of topological materials with unique electronic structures and distinct properties. HfRhGe stands out as a noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal with unconventional superconducting characteristics. Using muon-spin rotation and relaxation (µSR) spectroscopy and thermodynamic measurements, a fully gapped superconducting state is identified in HfRhGe that breaks time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition.

Collective optical properties can emerge from an ordered ensemble of emitters due to interactions between the individual units. Superlattices of halide perovskite nanocrystals exhibit collective light emission, influenced by dipole-dipole interactions between simultaneously excited nanocrystals. This coupling changes both the emission energy and rate compared to the emission of uncoupled nanocrystals.

Background And Aims: Observational healthcare data are an important tool for delineating patients' inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) journey in real-world settings. However, studies that characterize IBD cohorts typically rely on a single resource, apply diverse eligibility criteria, and extract variable sets of attributes, making comparison between cohorts challenging. We aim to longitudinally describe and compare IBD patient cohorts across multiple geographic regions, employing unified data and analysis framework.
