A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon implemented via D-shaped polymer optical fiber (POF) is exploited to realize cortisol biosensors. In this work, two immonosensors are designed and developed for the qualitative as well as quantitative measurement of cortisol in artificial and real samples. The performances of the POF-based biosensors in cortisol recognition are achieved using different functionalization protocols to make the same antibody receptor layer over the SPR surface via cysteamine and lipoic acid, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.

Photoelectrochemical water splitting on n-type semiconductors is highly dependent on catalysis of the rate-determining reaction of O evolution. Conventionally, in electrochemistry and photoelectrochemistry O evolution is catalyzed by metal oxide catalysts like IrO and RuO, whereas noble metals such as Pt are considered unsuitable for this purpose. However, our study finds that Pt, in its single-atom form, exhibits exceptional cocatalytic properties for photoelectrochemical water oxidation on a TiO photoanode, in contrast to Pt in a nanoparticle form.

Molecular docking is a widely used technique in drug discovery to predict the binding mode of a given ligand to its target. However, the identification of the near-native binding pose in docking experiments still represents a challenging task as the scoring functions currently employed by docking programs are parametrized to predict the binding affinity, and, therefore, they often fail to correctly identify the ligand native binding conformation. Selecting the correct binding mode is crucial to obtaining meaningful results and to conveniently optimizing new hit compounds.

The study of titanium dioxide (TiO) in the brookite phase is gaining popularity as evidence has shown the efficient photocatalytic performance of this less investigated polymorph. It has been recently reported that defective anisotropic brookite TiO nanorods display remarkable substrate-specific reactivity towards alcohol photoreforming, with rates of hydrogen production significantly (18-fold) higher than those exhibited by anatase TiO nanoparticles. To elucidate the basic photo-physical mechanisms and peculiarities leading to such an improvement in the photoactive efficiency, we investigated the recombination processes of photoexcited charge carriers in both stoichiometric and reduced brookite nanorods photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy in controlled environment.

The brain is a complex network, and diseases can alter its structures and connections between regions. Therefore, we can try to formalize the action of diseases by using operators acting on the brain network. Here, we propose a conceptual model of the brain, seen as a multilayer network, whose intra-lobe interactions are formalized as the diagonal blocks of an adjacency matrix.

In survival and stochastic lifespan modeling, numerous families of distributions are sometimes considered unnatural, unjustifiable theoretically, and occasionally superfluous. Here, a novel parsimonious survival model is developed using the Bilal distribution (BD) and the Kavya-Manoharan (KM) parsimonious transformation family. In addition to other analytical properties, the forms of probability density function (PDF) and behavior of the distributions' hazard rates are analyzed.

A chronic nonhealing wound poses a significant risk for infection and subsequent health complications, potentially endangering the patient's well-being. Therefore, effective wound dressings must meet several crucial criteria, including: (1) eliminating bacterial pathogen growth within the wound, (2) forming a barrier against airborne microbes, (3) promoting cell proliferation, (4) facilitating tissue repair. In this study, we synthesized 8 ± 3 nm Ag NP with maleic acid and incorporated them into an electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix with 1.

On-surface synthesis has become a prominent method for growing low-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials on metal surfaces. However, the necessity of decoupling organic nanostructures from metal substrates to exploit their properties requires either transfer methods or new strategies to perform reactions directly on inert surfaces. The use of on-surface light-induced reactions directly on semiconductor/insulating surfaces represents an alternative approach to address these challenges.
