Incorporation of Cellulose-Based Aerogels into Textile Structures.

Materials (Basel)

December 2023

Department of Material Engineering, Faculty of Textile Engineering, Technical University of Liberec, 46117 Liberec, Czech Republic.

Given their exceptional attributes, aerogels are viewed as a material with immense potential. Being a natural polymer, cellulose offers the advantage of being both replenishable and capable of breaking down naturally. Cellulose-derived aerogels encompass the replenish ability, biocompatible nature, and ability to degrade naturally inherent in cellulose, along with additional benefits like minimal weight, extensive porosity, and expansive specific surface area.

Skin wound healing is a complex physiological process that involves various cell types, growth factors, cytokines, and other bioactive compounds. In this study, a novel dual-function multilayered nanofibrous membrane is developed for chronic wound application. The membrane is composed of five alternating layers of polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers (PCL-PVA) with a dual function: the PCL nanofibrous layers allow cell adhesion and growth, and the PVA layers enriched with incorporated platelet lysate (PCL-PVA + PL) serve as a drug delivery system for continuous release of bioactive compounds from PL into an aqueous environment.

Microbial eukaryotes (protists) have major functional roles in aquatic ecosystems, including the biogeochemical cycling of elements as well as occupying various roles in the food web. Despite their importance for ecosystem function, the factors that drive diversification in protists are not known. Here, we aimed to identify the factors that drive differentiation and, subsequently, speciation in a free-living protist, Synura petersenii (Chrysophyceae).

Transition Temperature of Color Change in Thermochromic Systems and Its Description Using Sigmoidal Models.

Materials (Basel)

December 2023

Department of Material Engineering, Faculty of Textile Engineering, Technical University of Liberec, 46117 Liberec, Czech Republic.

Background: Symmetric sigmoidal models with four parameters based on an idealized S/Z-shaped curve are commonly used to analyze the optical parameters of thermochromic materials. However, our experimental findings show that this approach leads to systematic errors involving the incorrect estimation of the transition temperature or the possibility of a virtual indication of the hysteresis nature of a reversible thermochromic change. For this reason, we sought to find a five-parameter model that would appropriately avoid this problem.

The extraction efficiencies of thirty types of fibers produced by meltblown, alternating current electrospinning, and meltblown-co-electrospinning technologies were tested as advanced sorbents for on-line solid-phase extraction in a high-performance liquid chromatography system have been tested and compared with a commercial C18 sorbent. The properties of each fiber, which were often depended on the production process, and their applicability were demonstrated with the extraction of the model analytes nitrophenols and chlorophenols from various matrices including river water and to purify complex matrix human serum and bovine serum albumin from macromolecular ballast. Polycaprolactone fibers outperformed other polymers and were selected for subsequent modifications including (i) incorporation of hybrid carbon nanoparticles, i.

Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Akademika Heyrovského 1203, 500 05 Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

The development of new drug delivery platforms including the use of nanotechnology has been found of great interest in recent years. Two different loading approaches of the model antimycotic drug clotrimazole into the nanofibrous polycaprolactone and polydioxanone structures including electrospinning of a drug-polymer blend and impregnation of nanofibers with drug have been tested. The final amount of clotrimazole in the nanofibrous materials was determined by HPLC analysis and Raman spectroscopy.

Flexible Hybrid and Single-Component Aerogels: Synthesis, Characterization, and Applications.

Langmuir

November 2023

Department of Materials and Nanotechnology, SINTEF Industry, Forskningsveien 1, 0373 Oslo, Norway.

The inherent disadvantages of traditional nonflexible aerogels, such as high fragility and moisture sensitivity, severely restrict their applications. To address these issues, different techniques have been used to incorporate the flexibility in aerogel materials; hence, the term "flexible aerogels" was introduced. In the case of introducing flexibility, the organic part is induced with the inorganic part (flexible hybrid aerogels).

The ever-increasing demands of modern medicine drive the development of novel drug delivery materials. In particular, nanofibers are promising for such materials due to their favorable properties. However, most development is still carried out through laboratory techniques that do not allow extensive and reproducible characterization of materials, which slows medical research.

Orally dispersible films (ODFs) prepared by an electrospinning are a novel type of pharmaceutical formulation. This dosage form has the potential to be beneficial for small children and the elderly, who can have problems with administration of classical tablets due to the increased risk of choking and difficulty with swallowing. Due to the highly porous nanofiber morphology, the ODFs examined in this study achieve rapid disintegration into drug microparticles when in contact with saliva.

Textile-based photocatalysts are the new materials that can be utilized as an effective sustainable solution for biochemical hazards. Hence, we aimed to develop a sustainable, cost-effective, and facile approach for the fabrication of photocatalytic fabric using graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) and ferric-based multifunctional nanocomposite. Bulk g-CN was prepared from urea by heating it at 500 °C for 2 h.

Introduction: The aim of this work was the evaluation of surface modification in surgery of normally used hernia implants and thus improving their antimicrobial properties. The modification consisted of applying hybrid nanolayers with immobilized antiseptic substances (metal cations of Ag, Cu, and Zn) by sol-gel method which ensures prolonged effect of these substances and thus enables a greater resistance of the implant towards infection. In this work, attention is drawn to the issue of applying hybrid nanolayers, activation of mesh surfaces by physical plasma modification or ultraviolet C (UV C) radiation, and influence of these modifications on the mechanical properties of the final meshes.

"Muscle tone" is a clinically important and widely used term and palpation is a crucial skill for its diagnosis. However, the term is defined rather vaguely, and palpation is not measurable objectively. Therefore, several methods have been developed to measure muscle tone objectively, in terms of biomechanical properties of the muscle.
