Soft magnetic composite cores were produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS) from NiFe@ZnFeO and NiFeMo@ZnFeO pseudo-core-shell powders. In the Fe-Ni alloys@ZnFeO pseudo-core-shell composite powders, the core is a large nanocrystalline Permalloy or Supermalloy particle obtained by mechanical alloying, and the shell is a pseudo continuous layer of Zn ferrite particles. The pseudo-core-shell powders have been compacted by SPS at temperatures between 500-700 °C, with a holding time of 0 min.

The aim of this paper was to examine the effects of adding TiO nanoparticles to cementitious compositions and partially substituting natural aggregates with recycled aggregates consisting of glass, brick, slag, or textolite, and to examine the material's ability to resist corrosion under the action of chloride ions existent in the environment that attack the steel reinforcement. The results show that the changes in the cementitious composite when it comes to the composition and microstructure influence the formation of the oxide passivating layer of the reinforcement. The addition of TiO nanoparticles and recycled aggregates impacts the kinetics and corrosion mechanism of the reinforcement.

In this paper, we present the structural, mechanical and electrical properties of composite cement materials that can be widely used as substituent for cement. We start with the characterization of a composite cement sample using an analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. The measurements of the Vickers hardness, cyclic and sweep linear voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of composite cement materials were also recorded.

Introduction: Image-guided invasive procedures on the liver require a steep learning curve to acquire the necessary skills. The best and safest way to achieve these skills is through hands-on courses that include simulations and phantoms of different complications, without any risks for patients. There are many liver phantoms on the market made of various materials; however, there are few multimodal liver phantoms, and only two are cast in a 3D-printed mold.

Diagnostics (Basel)

July 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Emergency County Hospital, 400347 Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Patient compliance in chronic illnesses is essential for disease management. This also applies to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a chronic acquired retinal degeneration that needs constant monitoring and patient cooperation. Therefore, patients with AMD can benefit by being properly informed about their disease, regardless of the condition's stage.

Fish represent a significant source of nutrients but also cause negative health effects due to their bioaccumulation capacity for pollutants. The aim of this study was to examine the transfer of metals from the water of several rivers (Somes, Tisa, Sasar, Lapus, Lăpusel) to fish (Caras sp) tissue (subcutaneous fat, muscles, liver, intestines, kidneys, gills, brain, and eyes) and to identify and assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), Manganese (Mn), Cooper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Chromium (Cr) and Zinc (Zn) through the ingestion of fish (muscles and subcutaneous fat tissues). The obtained results indicated that a diet consisting of fish is particularly vulnerable, particularly in children compared to adults.

A NiMnSn Heusler alloy was obtained as a single B phase after 12 h of mechanical milling. The influence of prolonged milling on the phase stability was analysed for milling times up to 50 h, related to mean crystallite size, lattice strain, and electrical resistivity. The nature of the powders in the milled range was found to be nanocrystalline, with a mean crystallite size of about 33 ± 2 nm.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored adding titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles to cement composites to enhance their self-cleaning and self-sanitizing properties, while also examining the use of recycled materials to replace natural aggregates.
  • The results showed that the inclusion of TiO nanoparticles significantly increased the surface hydrophilicity and whiteness recovery of the cement composites, outperforming control samples in stain fading and cleanliness.
  • Additionally, the type of recycled aggregate used greatly affected microbial resistance, with some materials promoting mould growth while others inhibited it, indicating that both the nanoparticles and aggregate type are crucial for improving cementitious composite performance in construction.

Helical Gearbox Defect Detection with Machine Learning Using Regular Mesh Components and Sidebands.

Sensors (Basel)

May 2024

Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Robotics and Production Management, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, 400114 Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The current paper presents helical gearbox defect detection models built from raw vibration signals measured using a triaxial accelerometer. Gear faults, such as localized pitting, localized wear on helical pinion tooth flanks, and low lubricant level, are under observation for three rotating velocities of the actuator and three load levels at the speed reducer output. The emphasis is on the strong connection between the gear faults and the fundamental meshing frequency GMF, its harmonics, and the sidebands found in the vibration spectrum as an effect of the amplitude modulation (AM) and phase modulation (PM).

The study investigates the structural and chemical properties of brown rice flour (WRF), black rice flour (BRF) and their mixtures in ratios of 25%, 50% and 75% to provide reference information for the gluten-free bakery industry. BRF contains higher concentrations of proteins, lipids, total minerals, crude fiber, total polyphenols, proanthocyanidins and flavonoids than WRF. A higher amylose content in BRF than in WRF resulted in flour mixtures with slower starch digestion and a lower glycemic response depending on the BRF ratio added.
