Tissue hysteresivity is an important marker for determining the onset and progression of respiratory diseases, calculated from forced oscillation lung function test data. This study aims to reduce the number and duration of required measurements by combining multivariate data from various sensing devices. We propose using the Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) lung function test in both a low-frequency prototype and the commercial RESMON device, combined with continuous monitoring from the Equivital (EQV) LifeMonitor and processed by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

In this paper, we present the development and the validation of a novel index of nociception/anti-nociception (N/AN) based on skin impedance measurement in time and frequency domain with our prototype AnspecPro device. The primary objective of the study was to compare the Anspec-PRO device with two other commercial devices (Medasense, Medstorm). This comparison was designed to be conducted under the same conditions for the three devices.

Background: SILS (single incision laparoscopic surgery) and NOTES (natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery) are considered breakthroughs in minimally invasive surgery, the first consisting in the surgeon working via a single entrance site and the second via a natural orifice (e.g., oral cavity).

Article Synopsis
  • The precise location of gastric and colorectal tumors is crucial for surgical procedures, especially in laparoscopic surgeries, where small tumors can be difficult to locate.
  • A new instrument has been developed, incorporating an inductive proximity sensor and modified endoscopic clips, aimed at accurately identifying tumors during minimally-invasive surgery.
  • In tests on large animals, the system showed a 65% detection success rate at slow scanning speeds, which improved to 95% with direct guidance, though further enhancements are needed for clinical application.

Information technology is based on data management between various sources. Software projects, as varied as simple applications or as complex as self-driving cars, are heavily reliant on the amounts, and types, of data ingested by one or more interconnected systems. Data is not only consumed but is transformed or mutated which requires copious amounts of computing resources.

The accurate localization of small tumors of the digestive tract is of paramount importance in surgical oncology because it dictates the limits of resection and the extent of lymph node dissection. In this view, we have designed and fabricated a highly efficient sensing laparoscopic instrument focused on precise non-invasive extralumenal intraoperative detection of small colorectal or gastric tumors. The equipment is fully adapted for laparoscopic surgery and consists of an inductive proximity sensor encapsulated into a watertight stainless-steel case that is connected to an electronic functional block dimensionally scaled-down by the desired form and size for optimal surgical manipulation.

Background: The aims of this study are (a) to assess the psychometric quality of an instrument of acceptance of new technologies adapted from the UTAUT model, (b) to validate the UTAUT model as a valid measure to be applied in dental education, and (c) to determine which factors of the UTAUT model predict the behavioural intention of using a haptic virtual simulator (HVS).

Methods: A cross-sectional design study with a sample of 265 dentistry students was carried out.

Results: Using structural equation modelling, confirmatory factor analysis verified the adequacy of four-factor model, although the only factor that directly predicts behavioural intention is performance expectancy.

Location of small gastric or colorectal tumors during a laparoscopic procedure is often imprecise and can be misleading. There is a real need for a compatible and straightforward tool that can be used intraoperatively to help the surgeon in this regard. We emphasize in the present work on the fabrication of a new and innovative inductive proximity switch architecture, fully compatible with laparoscopic surgery and with direct application in precise localisation of bowel tumors.

Among two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, a new family of 2D anisotropic carbides and nitrides of early transition metals (MXenes) is very interesting because of the potential applications in electronics, medicine, and photocatalysis. In this paper, preparation, morphostructural characterization, band gaps determination, and salicylic acid photodegradation ability of TiC MXene and six nanocomposites consisting of the MXene modified by TiO, AgO, Ag, PdO, Pd, and Au are reported. It was confirmed using electron diffraction studies, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission microscopy that metals and metal oxides occur on the MXene flakes as nanoparticles in a shape of spots.

Temporal bone trauma effects on auditory anatomical structures in mastoid obliteration.

Department of Cervicofacial and ENT Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, "Iuliu Hațieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, Str. Gheorghe Bilascu Nr. 16-20, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Purpose: The risk of temporal bone fractures in head trauma is not negligible, as injuries also depend on the resistance and integrity of head structures. The capacity of mastoid cells to absorb part of the impact kinetic energy of the temporal bone is diminished after open cavity mastoidectomy, even if the surgical procedure is followed by mastoid obliteration. The aim of our study was to evaluate the severity of lesions in auditory anatomical structures after a lateral impact on cadaveric temporal bones in which open cavity mastoidectomy followed by mastoid obliteration was performed, compared to cadaveric temporal bones with preserved mastoids.

Removal of lead ions from aqueous solutions, in the presence and in absence of commercial TiO, under UV-light was studied. The influence of catalyst mass, concentration of Pb(II) ions and of citric acid in the starting solution as well as the impact of illumination conditions on the removal rate were also investigated. The results were fitted on the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and Elovich kinetic models, Weber-Morris intraparticle and liquid film diffusion models, in order to establish the photoreduction mechanism.

There has been great interest in the development of non-invasive techniques for the diagnosis of liver fibrosis in chronic liver diseases, including ultrasound elastographic methods. Some of these methods have already been adequately studied for the non-invasive assessment of diffuse liver diseases. Others, however, such as two-dimensional Shear Wave Elastography (SWE), of more recent appearance, have yet to be validated and some aspects are for the moment incompletely elucidated.

Microbiological and chemical characteristics of white bread during storage in paper-packages modified with Ag/TiO2-SiO2, Ag/N-TiO2 or Au/TiO2 were investigated. The whiteness and the water retention of the modified packages were slightly superior to those exhibited by the reference sample, as the color of the composite was lighter. The water retention was very good especially for the Ag/TiO2-SiO2-paper.

The Baia Sprie epithermal system, a well-known deposit for its impressive mineralogical associations, shows the proper conditions for acid mine drainage and can be considered a general example for affected mining areas around the globe. Efflorescent samples from the abandoned open pit Minei Hill have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman and near-infrared (NIR) spectrometry. The identified phases represent mostly iron sulfates with different hydration degrees (szomolnokite, rozenite, melanterite, coquimbite, ferricopiapite), Zn and Al sulfates (gunningite, alunogen, halotrichite).

Peripheral facial paralysis is accompanied by facial motor disorders and also, by oral dysfunctions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the lip forces and chewing efficiency in a group of children with peripheral facial paralysis. The degree of peripheral facial paralysis in the study group (n 11) was assessed using the House-Brackmann scale.

Role of mastoid pneumatization in temporal bone fractures.

AJNR Am J Neuroradiol

July 2014

Faculty of Dental Medicine, Department of Cervicofacial and Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery (S.A., V.E.T.).

Background And Purpose: The mastoid portion of the temporal bone has multiple functional roles in the organism, including regulation of pressure in the middle ear and protection of the inner ear. We investigated whether mastoid pneumatization plays a role in the protection of vital structures in the temporal bone during direct lateral trauma.

Material And Methods: The study was performed on 20 human temporal bones isolated from cadavers.
