There is a need for rigorous and scientifically-based testing standards for existing and new enteric methane mitigation technologies, including antimethanogenic feed additives (AMFA). The current review provides guidelines for conducting and analyzing data from experiments with ruminants intended to test the antimethanogenic and production effects of feed additives. Recommendations include study design and statistical analysis of the data, dietary effects, associative effect of AMFA with other mitigation strategies, appropriate methods for measuring methane emissions, production and physiological responses to AMFA, and their effects on animal health and product quality.

Despite reported differences in the microbiota among cheese types and even producers, to the best of our knowledge, no study has comprehensively assessed all potential microbial sources and their contributions to any raw ewe milk-derived cheese, which could suppose great potential for benefits from research in this area. This study compared the impact of 2 pasture-based feeding systems, namely a traditional perennial ryegrass (PRG) diet, and a recently introduced, more sustainable multispecies swards (MSS) diet, on the functional lipid profile of raw milk. Mid-infrared spectroscopy is a technology used globally for quantifying the concentration of fat, protein, lactose and other constituents in the milk samples of both individual animals and bulk tank milk. Differences in the milk components and yield of cows are known to exist between morning and evening milk; nonetheless, differences in the spectra originating from the same cow from morning and evening milkings have never been investigated. Data was obtained from 2,602 dairy cows from 7 research farms in Ireland.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of providing dry pelleted starter diet (DPS) or a liquid mixture of milk replacer and starter diet (LMR+S) to suckling pigs housed in farrowing pens of sub-standard or optimal hygiene conditions on pig growth to slaughter, and post-weaning (PW) intestinal parameters. A decision support tool or system is a computerized information system used to support decision-making in a business; one central component to profitable dairy cattle production systems is the appropriate mating of bulls and females. While tools have been described to aid mating decisions between dairy bulls and dairy females, or between beef bulls and beef females, there is a void of such tools that recommend which beef bull to mate to individual dairy females. The objective of the present study was to develop and validate a framework, founded on linear programming, to aid herd-level mating decisions where the bull-female mating is tailored based on complementarity and compatibility of both mates; consideration in the process was given to the genetic merit of both mates for a series of traits as well as the life history of the female herself.

The objective of this study was to establish the impact of β-casein A1/A1, A1/A2 and A2/A2 phenotypes on the cheese-making process, cheese structure and on the subsequent in vitro gastric digestion properties of the cheese samples. The time required for curd cutting in cheese milk containing β-casein A2/A2 was significantly delayed, compared to milks containing β-caseins A1/A1 and A1/A2.
