Real-world evidence on the association between natural medicinal products and the recurrence of sleep disorders is currently limited, particularly when compared to the evidence reported for prescription hypnotics. In a retrospective cohort analysis, we investigated patients with sleep disorders prescribed either the natural medicinal product Neurexan (Nx4), benzodiazepines, or nonbenzodiazepines (Z-drugs) using the IQVIA Disease Analyzer database, which encompasses electronic medical records nationwide in Germany. A 1:1 matching procedure based on age, sex, prevalent depression, anxiety or adjustment disorder, and the number of medical consultations in the past 12 months resulted in four cohorts: patients prescribed Nx4 were matched with those prescribed Z-drugs (two cohorts with 8594 matched patients each), and another cohort of patients prescribed Nx4 were matched with those prescribed benzodiazepines (7779 matched pairs).

Chronic insomnia occurs in ~10% of the general population and has numerous negative health effects. The recommended first line treatment of cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia is not widely available for patients in Europe, so pharmacotherapies such as benzodiazepine receptor agonist agents (benzodiazepines and Z-drugs) are commonly used. However, their use is only recommended for ≤4 weeks due to unproven long-term efficacy in treatment of chronic insomnia, and the risk of tolerance, and the potential for dependence and misuse.

Background: There is still no approved medication for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This network meta-analysis investigated pharmacological and dietary-supplement treatments for ASD.

Methods: We searched for randomized-controlled-trials (RCTs) with a minimum duration of seven days in ClinicalTrials.

Background: Schizophrenia is a common, severe, and usually chronic disorder. Maintenance treatment with antipsychotic drugs can prevent relapse but also causes side-effects. We aimed to compare the efficacy and tolerability of antipsychotics as maintenance treatment for non-treatment resistant patients with schizophrenia.

Background: Placebo response in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) might dilute drug-placebo differences and hinder drug development. Therefore, this meta-analysis investigated placebo response in core symptoms.

Methods: We searched ClinicalTrials.

Objectives: Symptoms of insomnia are highly prevalent in the elderly. A significant number of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions exist, but, up-to-date, their comparative efficacy and safety has not been sufficiently assessed.

Methods: We integrated the randomized evidence from every available treatment for insomnia in the elderly (>65 years) by performing a network meta-analysis.

Reducing antipsychotic drugs in stable patients with chronic schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

March 2021

Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Klinikum Rechts Der Isar, School of Medicine, Technical University of Munich, Ismaningerstr. 22, 81675, Munich, Germany.

As the course of schizophrenic disorders is often chronic, treatment guidelines recommend continuous maintenance treatment to prevent relapses, but antipsychotic drugs can cause many side effects. It, therefore, seems reasonable to try to reduce doses in stable phases of the illness or even try to stop medication. We conducted a 26 weeks, randomized, rater blind, feasibility study to examine individualized antipsychotic dose reduction versus continuous maintenance treatment (Register Number: NCT02307396).

Introduction: The aim of this study is to evaluate the difference in perioperative complication rate in total hip, bipolar hemiarthroplasties and total knee arthroplasty in patients with Parkinson disease in trauma and elective surgery in our Musculoskeletal Center during a period of 10 years.

Material And Method: Between 2006 and 2016, 45 bipolar hemiarthroplasties in trauma surgery, 15 total knee and 19 total hip arthroplasties in patients with Parkinson's disease were performed. We divided the patients in two groups.

Introduction: Meta-analyses are useful to increase knowledge and strengthen evidence about antidepressant treatment supplementary to individual studies.

Methods: A pooled analysis of four multicenter, open-label, prospective, non-interventional studies (2009-2013) was performed to provide further evidence about the antidepressant effectiveness and tolerability of agomelatine (25-50 mg/day) in a large number of non-selected German outpatients with major depressive disorder. The main analysis was performed after 12 weeks (n = 9601) and in subpopulations after 24 and 52 weeks by descriptive statistical methods.

Biol Psychiatry

December 2011

Department of Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, Social Foundation Bamberg, Teaching Hospital of the University of Erlangen, Bamberg, Germany.

Background: Insomnia is highly prevalent and impairing but also highly comorbid with other chronic physical/mental disorders. Population-based research has yet to differentiate the role impairments uniquely associated with insomnia per se from those due to comorbidity.

Methods: A representative sample of 6791 adult subscribers to a large national US commercial health plan was surveyed by telephone about sleep and health.

Research Unit Orthopaedics and Surgery, Neumarkt Hospital, Teaching Hospital of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Nürnbergerstrasse 12, 92318, Neumarkt i.d. OPf, Germany.

The Wagner cone prosthesis is indicated in uncemented total hip replacement of cases with cylinder-shaped femurs, deformed femurs, femurs with increased antetorsion, and in conditions of intramedullary bony scar tissue after previous osteotomies. The objective of this study is to present long-term results. From January 1, 1993 to December 31, 1995, 132 implantations were made with the Wagner cone prosthesis.
