Article Synopsis
  • Acute spinal cord infarction (SCI) is a rare condition that is challenging to diagnose due to variable clinical features and limitations in MRI detection, prompting researchers to evaluate patient characteristics and diagnostic methods.
  • A systematic review of studies found that early intervention, particularly spinal surgical decompression, is linked to better patient outcomes, with a significant percentage benefiting from surgery compared to medical treatments alone.
  • The study highlighted that the T2 diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) technique has moderate accuracy in identifying hyperacute spinal cord injuries, specifically during the critical first 6 hours after onset.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health concern globally, with significant implications for morbidity, mortality, and long-term disability. While extensive research has been conducted on TBI management in high-income countries, limited attention has been given to the specific challenges and opportunities faced by healthcare systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This perspective study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current status of TBI management in SSA, focusing on the unique challenges and potential opportunities for improvement.

Background: This study aims to appraise aneurysm scores and ratios' ability to discriminate between ruptured aneurysms and unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs) in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients harboring multiple intracranial aneurysms (MICAs). We, then, investigate the most frequent risk factors associated with MICAs.

Methods: We retrospectively applied unruptured intracranial aneurysm treatment score (UIATS) and population hypertension age size of aneurysm earlier SAH from another aneurysm site of aneurysm (PHASES) score, aspect, and dome-to-neck ratio to the 59 consecutive spontaneous SAH patients with MICAs admitted between January 2000 and December 2015 to the Department of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital Center "Hôpital des Spécialités" of Rabat (Morocco).

Background: It is unclear whether delays in care affect prognosis of patients with lung cancer. The primary objective of this study was to describe the care pathway of patients diagnosed with lung cancer in a French region. Secondary objectives were to identify markers associated with 1) time from imaging to treatment and 2) with 1-year survival.

  • Excessive waiting times for diagnostic imaging and treatment of pancreatic cancer patients can negatively affect their prognosis, but this impact varies based on timing and treatment options.
  • A study analyzed the medical profiles of 324 patients in a French region, collecting data on key time intervals from initial visits to diagnosis and treatment commencement.
  • Findings revealed that delays in receiving diagnostic imaging significantly correlated with a higher risk of death, especially for those with metastatic disease or who did not undergo tumor resection.

Objective: The French National Authority for Health (HAS), with a multidisciplinary working group, developed an indicator 'ISO-ORTHO' to assess surgical site infections (SSIs) after total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) based on the hospital discharge database. We present the ISO-ORTHO indicator designed for SSI automated detection and its relevance for quality improvement and hospital benchmarks.

Methods: The algorithm is based on a combination of (ICD-10) and procedure codes of the hospital stay.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving stroke care pathways, particularly the revascularization process for ischemic stroke, highlighting the importance of timely interventions.
  • Researchers identified factors that lead to delays in treatment, such as not calling emergency medical services, prior autonomy loss, and atypical symptoms, which significantly increased the chance of delayed imaging and revascularization.
  • The findings suggest the need for better organization and educational campaigns in the region to encourage quicker EMS calls and improve public awareness of stroke symptoms, aiming to reduce treatment delays.
