"It made me feel like a shit parent": an intersectional analysis of pandemic mothering.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought to the fore the everyday and exceptional challenges for mothers. Rarely, however, did research or social commentary acknowledge the multiplicities of motherhood during this prolonged period of risk, disruption, and uncertainty. This paper draws upon interviews with 24 mothers living in Aotearoa New Zealand during the pandemic, including women who were pregnant and gave birth during lockdowns, teenage mothers, single and low-income mothers, and working mothers.

Cultural challenges for adapting behavioral intervention frameworks: A critical examination from a cultural psychology perspective.

We introduce the bias and equivalence framework to highlight how concepts, methods, and tools from cultural psychology can contribute to successful cultural adaptation and implementation of behavioral interventions. To situate our contribution, we provide a review of recent cultural adaptation research and existing frameworks. We identified 68 different frameworks that have been cited when reporting cultural adaptations and highlight three major adaptation dimensions that can be used to differentiate adaptations.

Increased risk of cardiovascular and renal disease, and diabetes for all women diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus in New Zealand-A national retrospective cohort study.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study is to compare cardiometabolic and renal outcomes for all women in New Zealand with gestational diabetes (2001-2010) with women without diabetes, 10-20 years following delivery.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study, utilizing a national dataset providing information for all women who gave birth between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2010 (n = 604 398).

Metagenome-assembled bacterial genomes from benthic microbial mats in ice-covered Lake Vanda, Antarctica.

We recovered 57 bacterial metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from benthic microbial mat pinnacles from Lake Vanda, Antarctica. These MAGs provide access to genomes from polar environments and can assist in culturing and utilizing these Antarctic bacteria.

How Indigenous communities in New Zealand are protecting their data.

Concerns about the ethical use of data, privacy, and data harms are front of mind in many jurisdictions as regulators move to impose tighter controls on data privacy and protection, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Although efforts to hold corporations to account for their deployment of data and data-driven technologies have been largely welcomed by academics and civil society, there is a growing recognition of the limits to individual data rights, given the capacity of tech giants to link, surveil, target, and make inferences about groups. Questions about whether collective data rights exist, and how they can be recognized and protected, have provided fertile ground for researchers but have yet to penetrate the broader discourse on data rights and regulation.

Introduction In Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), type 2 diabetes (T2D) is predominantly managed in primary care. Despite established guidelines, patients are often suboptimally managed, with inequitable health outcomes. To date, few NZ studies have evaluated the primary care management of T2D at the time of diagnosis.

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and use of psychostimulants in Aotearoa, New Zealand: exploring the treatment gap.

Introduction Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder affecting about 7% of those aged up to 12 years, 5% of teenagers and 3% of adults. It is associated with poor academic performance, substance abuse, criminality, poor social functioning and other negative outcomes. Psychotherapeutic treatment is moderately successful, whereas pharmacotherapy with stimulant medication is more efficacious and is recommended in many international guidelines.

Working Together to Support Self-Determination for Tāngata Kāpō (Blind and Low Vision) Māori: An Exemplar.

This paper addresses the marginalisation of tāngata kāpō Māori (blind and low-vision Indigenous New Zealanders) in health- and vision-related research, despite New Zealand's commitments to international conventions. Utilising a pūrākau-based approach, it challenges existing colonial narratives and emphasises the importance of Māori perspectives. We advocate for Māori self-determination over research processes.

Ethnic inequities in use of breast conserving surgery and radiation therapy in Aotearoa/New Zealand: which factors contribute?

Purpose: Aotearoa/New Zealand (NZ) faces ethnic inequities with respect to breast cancer survival and treatment. This study establishes if there are ethnic differences in (i) type of surgery and (ii) receipt of radiotherapy (RT) following breast conserving surgery (BCS), among women with early-stage breast cancer in NZ.

Methods: This analysis used Te Rēhita Mata Ūtaetae (Breast Cancer Foundation National Register), a prospectively maintained database of breast cancers from 2000 to 2020.

R2D ligase: Unveiling a novel DNA ligase with surprising DNA-to-RNA ligation activity.

DNA ligases catalyze bond formation in the backbone of nucleic acids via the formation of a phosphodiester bond between adjacent 5' phosphates and 3' hydroxyl groups on one strand of the duplex. While DNA ligases preferentially ligate single breaks in double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), they are capable of ligating a multitude of other nucleic acid substrates like blunt-ended dsDNA, TA overhangs, short overhangs and various DNA-RNA hybrids. Here we report a novel DNA ligase from Cronobacter phage CR 9 (R2D Ligase) with an unexpected DNA-to-RNA ligation activity.

Aims: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common primary vasculitis in adults over 50 years of age. To facilitate early diagnosis and reduce harms from corticosteroids and temporal artery biopsies, fast-track pathways have been established. We review the benefits of the fast-track pathway set up in Waikato, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Epidemiology of giant cell arteritis in Waikato, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Aim: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common primary vasculitis in adults over 50 years of age. Our primary objective was to assess the incidence and prevalence of GCA in Waikato in a bid to deepen our understanding of the epidemiology of GCA in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Methods: From January 2014 to December 2022, cases of GCA were identified prospectively and retrospectively through temporal artery ultrasound request lists and temporal artery biopsy histology reports.

Does diabetes affect breast cancer survival?

Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of diabetes on breast cancer-specific survival among women with breast cancer in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Methods: This study included women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer between 2005 and 2020, with their information documented in the Te Rēhita Mate Ūtaetae-Breast Cancer Foundation National Register. Breast cancer survival curves for women with diabetes and those without diabetes were generated using the Kaplan-Meier method.

Facilitators and barriers for implementation of health programmes with Māori communities.

Background: Addressing health inequities that Māori (Indigenous peoples) communities face in New Zealand is a key aim of researchers and practitioners. However, there is limited understanding of the implementation processes and outcomes of health programmes for addressing these inequities. Hydroxyapatite is widely used in bone implantation because of its similar mineral composition to natural bone, allowing it to serve as a biocompatible osteoconductive support. The decision-making process for younger women is complex, with this group more likely to have an advanced diagnosis and life-stage considerations that can impact on treatment.
