Article Synopsis
  • The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is commonly used to screen cognitive impairments, but its effectiveness in capturing various cognitive abilities compared to standard neuropsychological tests is questioned.
  • A study with 1,037 older adults over 6 years revealed that only the total MMSE score and the language and recall domains were linked to memory performance, while other domains showed no unique associations.
  • The study supports the MMSE's validity for general screening of cognitive change but emphasizes that it shouldn't replace comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations for diagnosing specific cognitive deficits.

A working group from the Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds effort collaborated with the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to create an inventory of species confirmed or expected to produce sound underwater. We used several existing inventories and additional literature searches to compile a dataset categorizing scientific knowledge of sonifery for 33,462 species and subspecies across marine mammals, other tetrapods, fishes, and invertebrates. We found 729 species documented as producing active and/or passive sounds under natural conditions, with another 21,911 species deemed likely to produce sounds based on evaluated taxonomic relationships.

Human activities are accelerating rates of biological invasions and climate-driven range expansions globally, yet we understand little of how genomic processes facilitate the invasion process. Although most of the literature has focused on underlying phenotypic correlates of invasiveness, advances in genomic technologies are showing a strong link between genomic variation and invasion success. Here, we consider the ability of genomic tools and technologies to (i) inform mechanistic understanding of biological invasions and (ii) solve real-world issues in predicting and managing biological invasions.

Composite indices have been widely used to rank the environmental performance of nations. Such environmental indices can be useful in communicating complex information as a single value and have the potential to generate political and media awareness of environmental issues. However, poorly constructed, or poorly communicated indices, can hinder efforts to identify environmental failings, and there are considerable differences in rank among existing environmental indices.

Neural substrates of specific and general autobiographical memory retrieval in younger and older adults.

Neuropsychologia

January 2024

School of Psychology, The University of Auckland, New Zealand; Rotman Research Institute, Baycrest Health Sciences, Canada; Department of Psychology, University of Toronto, Canada.

Healthy aging is associated with a shift away from the retrieval of specific episodic autobiographical memories (AMs), towards more general and semanticized memories. Younger adults modulate activity in the default mode network according to the episodic specificity of AM retrieval. However, little is known about whether aging disrupts this neural modulation.

Animal Biotechnology, Ruakura Research Centre, AgResearch, Hamilton, New Zealand; and Department of Molecular Medicine and Pathology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

Context: Genome editing enables the introduction of beneficial sequence variants into the genomes of animals with high genetic merit in a single generation. This can be achieved by introducing variants into primary cells followed by producing a live animal from these cells by somatic cell nuclear transfer cloning. The latter step is associated with low efficiencies and developmental problems due to incorrect reprogramming of the donor cells, causing animal welfare concerns.

Atmospheric Gas-Phase Formation of Methanesulfonic Acid.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2023

Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen, Universitetsparken 5, Copenhagen Ø DK-2100, Denmark.

Despite its impact on the climate, the mechanism of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) formation in the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) remains unclear. The DMS + OH reaction is known to form methanesulfinic acid (MSIA), methane sulfenic acid (MSEA), the methylthio radical (CHS), and hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF). Among them, HPMTF reacts further to form SO and OCS, while the other three form the CHSO radical.

While social accountability (SA) is regarded as an obligation or mandate for medical school administration, it runs the danger of becoming a bureaucratic checkbox. Compassion which leads to social responsiveness (SR), in contrast, is often recognized as an individual characteristic, detached from the public domain. The two, however, complement each other in practice.

Being able to tread water effectively can improve the likelihood of survival following accidental immersion. People tread water in various ways, ranging from rudimentary 'doggy-paddle' to more elaborate techniques like the eggbeater, but little is known about the energetic and cognitive requirements of treading water. We therefore aimed to measure the demands of treading water techniques for people of different experience levels.

While advancements in the treatment of diabetes continue to rapidly evolve, many of the newer technologies have financial barriers to care, opposing the egalitarian ethos of Banting who sold his patent on insulin for a nominal cost to allow it to be made widely available. Inequity in access to new therapies drives disparity in diabetes burden with potential for these gaps to widen in the future. The 2023 International Conference on Advanced Technologies and Treatments of Diabetes (ATTD) presented ground-breaking and current research in diabetes technology.
