Purpose: B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are significant contributors to cancer-related mortality. In this single-arm, retrospective cohort study, we aimed to examine the outcomes of a radioimmunotherapeutic modality, Y-labeled ibritumomab tiuxetan (YIT) in B-cell NHLs.

Methods And Materials: We conducted this study based on data from the United Arab Emirates lymphoma registry.

Contemporary Management of Clinically Non-functioning Pituitary Adenomas: A Clinical Review.

Non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are benign pituitary tumours that constitute about one-third of all pituitary adenomas. They typically present with symptoms of mass effects resulting in hypopituitarism, visual symptoms, or headache. Most NFPAs are macroadenomas (>1 cm in diameter) at diagnosis that can occasionally grow quite large and invade the cavernous sinus causing acute nerve compression and some patients may develop acute haemorrhage due to pituitary apoplexy.

Aetiologies of Hyperprolactinaemia: A retrospective analysis from a tertiary healthcare centre.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the aetiologies of hyperprolactinaemia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Methods: This retrospective study used laboratory databases to identify all patients who underwent evaluation for prolactin at Tawam Hospital, Al Ain, UAE, between 2009 and 2015. Of those 2,280 patients, all patients with low or normal prolactin (n = 1,315) were excluded.

Intrarenal arteriovenous malformation following flexible ureterorenoscopy and holmium laser stone fragmentation: report of a case.

Background: Flexible ureterorenoscopy (FURS) and holmium laser lithotripsy is currently considered as one of the treatment options for large renal calculi. It has been shown to be safer than percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The latter can sometimes be complicated by the formation of intrarenal arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

Value of procalcitonin as a marker of surgical site infection following spinal surgery.

Aim: To compare the value of Procalcitonin (PCT) as a marker of surgical site infection to other inflammatory markers, including C-Reactive Protein (CRP), White Cell Count (WCC) and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) in patients undergoing a number of spinal procedures. This study also aims to describe the biokinetic profile of the above-named markers in patients developing surgical site infection and those remaining infection-free post-operatively.

Methods: 200 patients undergoing four routine elective spinal procedures were included for analysis.

The majority of studies describing demographics and co-occurring conditions in cohorts with Down syndrome come from regions outside of the Middle East, mainly from Europe and North America. This paper describes demographics and co-occurring conditions in a hospital-based cohort of individuals with Down syndrome living in the Middle Eastern country of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The first dedicated Down syndrome clinic in the UAE was established in 2012 at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain.

Correlation between pre-ramadan glycemic control and subsequent glucose fluctuation during fasting in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes.

Background: Even though patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are exempted from fasting, the vast majority elect to fast against the advice of their healthcare providers. We have previously reported the incidence of wide fluctuations in blood glucose (BG) along with "unrecognized" severe hypoglycemia during Ramadan fasting in adolescents with T1DM. This report compares the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data during fasting in adolescents with T1DM according to their Pre-Ramadan diabetes control.

Sellar Masses: An Epidemiological Study.

Background: Sellar masses (SM) are mostly benign growths of pituitary or nonpituitary origin that are increasingly encountered in clinical practice. To date, no comprehensive population-based study has reported the epidemiology of SM from North America.

Aim: To determine the epidemiology of SM in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Viral hepatitis in hemodialysis: An update.

Hepatitis outbreaks in hemodialysis (HD) patients and staff were reported in the late 1960s, and a number of hepatotropic viruses transmitted by blood and other body fluids have been identified. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) was the first significant hepatotropic virus to be identified in HD centers. HBV infection has been effectively controlled by active vaccination, screening of blood donors, the use of erythropoietin and segregation of HBV carriers.

Epstein-Barr virus infection is inversely correlated with the expression of retinoblastoma protein in Reed-Sternberg cells in classic Hodgkin lymphoma.

Classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is characterized by few neoplastic Hodgkin/Reed-Sternberg (H/RS) cells in a background of intense inflammatory infiltrate. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been shown to affect cell cycle and regulation of apoptosis. In total, 82 cases of cHL were studied.

Outcome of pregnancy in chronic myeloid leukaemia patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors: short report from a single centre.

Background: The aim of this work was to report on the outcome of pregnancy in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia who were on tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment.

Patients And Methods: We report the result of 22 pregnancies in 14 patients (9 female and 5 male) who conceived or their partner conceived while being on tyrosine kinase inhibitors for their CML.

Results: All pregnancies except one were uneventful.

Physician user satisfaction with an electronic medical records system in primary healthcare centres in Al Ain: a qualitative study.

Objectives: To explore physician satisfaction with an electronic medical records (EMR) system, to identify and explore the main limitations of the system and finally to submit recommendations to address these limitations.

Design: A descriptive qualitative study that entailed three focus group interviews was performed among physicians using open-ended questions. The interviews were audiotaped, documented and transcribed verbatim.

Care of terminally-ill patients: an opinion survey among critical care healthcare providers in the Middle East.

Background: Modern medicine has allowed physicians to support the dying terminally-ill patient with artificial means. However, a common dilemma faced by physicians in general, and intensivist in particular is when to limit or withdraw aggressive intervention.

Objective: To study the effect of training background and seniority on Do-not to resuscitate (DNR) decisions in the Middle East.

Three-dimensional craniofacial morphology in unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Craniofacial morphology and asymmetry were compared before, during, and after puberty within and between patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLP) and a non-cleft group. In the UCCLP group, the posterior cranial base and total cranial base were significantly shorter at all skeletal periods, the maxilla was significantly retruded and posteriorly rotated, and the mandible was significantly smaller and inferoposteriorly rotated. The angle between the nasal and mandibular plane and lower anterior facial height were significantly higher, and upper posterior facial height and total posterior height were significantly lower, in the UCCLP group.

Effect of epidural methylprednisolone on post-operative pain and length of hospital stay in patients undergoing lumbar microdiscectomy.

Background & Aim: Intraoperative epidural corticosteroids have been used to decrease post-operative pain post-discectomy. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of epidural corticosteroids on post-operative pain and length of post-operative hospital stay in patients undergoing unilateral lumbar microdiscectomy.

Methods: 150 consecutively treated, comparable patients with unilateral lumbar disc herniation were prospectively allocated randomly to receive either a sponge soaked in epidural corticosteroids or saline at the end of the operative procedure.

Comparison between short- and long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in hemodialysis patients: target hemoglobin, variability, and outcome.

Purpose: Maintaining target hemoglobin (Hb) with minimal variability is a challenge in hemodialysis (HD) patients. The aim of this study is to compare the long- and short-acting erythropoietin-stimulating agents such as Aranesp and Eprex in achieving these targets.

Methods: Randomized, prospective, open-labeled study of 24 weeks includes stable patients on HD >3 months, age >18 years, and on Eprex for >3 months.

Complete tissue expander coverage by musculo-fascial flaps in immediate breast mound reconstruction after mastectomy.

Immediate breast reconstruction with tissue expander has become an increasingly popular procedure. Complete coverage of the expander by a musculofascial layer provides an additional well-vascularised layer, reducing the rate of possible complications of skin necrosis, prosthesis displacement, and the late capsular contracture. Complete expander coverage can be achieved by a combination of pectoralis major muscle and adjacent thoracic fascia in selected patients.

A prospective randomized pilot study on intermittent post-dialysis dosing of cinacalcet.

Background: Treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is important in management of patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis (HD). Calcimimetic agent, cinacalcet provides an option for control of SHPT in patients who fail traditional therapy. It may not have optimal results in non-compliant patients.

Quinine-induced bronchiolitis obliterans and organizing pneumonia.

Quinine is a vital anti-malarial drug used in the management of resistant Falciparum malaria. There are previous reports of quinine-induced pulmonary edema and infiltrates. We report the first case of biopsy-proven bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP), confirmed by the Naranjo Adverse Drug Reaction Probability Scale (NADRS) of 5 and a severity scale of 5, secondary to intravenous quinine, in a 15-year-old girl with Plasmodium falciparum infection after a visit to Kenya.

Stump appendicitis after laparoscopic appendectomy: case report.

Stump appendicitis is a rare delayed complication of appendectomy. The delay in diagnosis is usually because of a prior history of appendectomy. We report a case of stump appendicitis diagnosed pre-operatively with a computerized tomography (CT) scan after laparoscopic appendectomy.

Burned-out testicular tumor: a case report.

Germ cell tumors constitute the majority of all testicular tumors, which are relatively rare overall and are mainly encountered in young adults and teenagers. The term 'burnedout' germ cell tumor refers to the presence of a metastatic germ cell tumor with histological regression of the primary testicular lesion. Clinical examination of the testes and scrotal sonography is pivotal in the initial diagnosis of such neoplasms.

Extrapontine myelinolysis and cortical laminar necrosis caused by severe hypernatremia following peritoneal lavage for ruptured hydatid cyst of the liver. A case report and review of the literature.

Extrapontine myelinolysis (EPM) and cortical laminar necrosis (CLN) have rarely been reported in association with severe hypernatremia. We describe a patient with EPM associated with CLN following severe hypernatremia due to hypertonic peritoneal lavage after a ruptured hydatid cyst of the liver. Clinical and neuroimaging findings in acute stage and serial brain MRI at two and five month follow-up are discussed in detail.

Thyroglossal duct cyst papillary carcinoma.

Thyroglossal duct cysts are usually located in the midline of the neck. The coexistence of carcinomas in thyroglossal duct cysts is extremely rare, with most being papillary carcinomas. Usually, the diagnosis is only made postoperatively after excision of the cyst.
