Nanohybrid based non-invasive biosensing platforms are emerging as promising alternatives to detect biomarkers in complex and diverse bio-fluids toward ultrasensitive point-of-care diagnostics. Herein, we report the development of a highly sensitive, facile, non-invasive, label free, affordable, and innovative electrochemical screen printed immunosensor for identifying CYFRA 21-1, an established and crucial biomarker for oral cancer. Until now, no work has been reported utilizing a titanium carbide TiC MXene nanosheet and L-cysteine (L-Cyst) functionalized magnetite nanoparticle (MNPs) nanohybrid based immunosensor for electrochemical detection of CYFRA 21-1.

Controversies in neuro-oncology: Focal proton versus photon radiation therapy for adult brain tumors.

Neurooncol Pract

August 2024

Department of Radiological Sciences, Oncology and Anatomical Pathology, Sapienza University of Rome, Policlinico Umberto I, Rome, Italy.

Radiation therapy (RT) plays a fundamental role in the treatment of malignant and benign brain tumors. Current state-of-the-art photon- and proton-based RT combines more conformal dose distribution of target volumes and accurate dose delivery while limiting the adverse radiation effects. PubMed was systematically searched from from 2000 to October 2023 to identify studies reporting outcomes related to treatment of central nervous system (CNS)/skull base tumors with PT in adults.

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) and low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) constitute a morphological continuum with certain overlapping histopathological features and MUC 4 immunopositivity. SEF is characterized by EWSR1 gene rearrangement, is relatively more aggressive and shows a limited response to chemotherapy. Lately, a subset of tumors with morphological features of SEF, but lacking MUC4 immunostaining and EWSR1 gene rearrangement have been observed.

Article Synopsis
  • Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can indicate cancer recurrence and were studied in patients with large hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) undergoing preoperative transarterial embolization (TAE).
  • The study analyzed blood samples for CTCs and specific miRNA levels before and after TAE to understand their impact on oncological outcomes.
  • Results showed varied CTC presence post-surgery, with those who cleared CTCs having better survival, suggesting CTC clearance could be a useful prognostic marker for HCC.

Objectives: With sensitive imaging for breast cancer, the question arises whether present-day oncologists treat dOMBC with palliative systemic therapy (ST), which, a few years earlier, would have been treated with curative intent. We retrospectively analyzed outcomes of dOMBC treated with curative intent using a combination of surgery, metastasis-directed radiotherapy (RT), and adjuvant/neoadjuvant ST and have also explored the possible role of total lesional glycolysis of metastases and p53 immunohistochemistry in predicting outcomes.

Methods: Data were collected from a prospectively maintained database using electronic medical records and Radiation Oncology Information System.

Bone cancer among adolescents and children exhibits varying survival outcomes based on disease state. While localized bone cancer cases have a survival rate exceeding 70%, metastatic, refractory, and recurrent forms are associated with significantly poorer prognoses. Initially believed to be mere vehicles for cellular waste disposal, exosomes are now recognized as extracellular vesicles facilitating intercellular communication.

  • Data on radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is limited, mostly based on case reports, and this study reflects the experience from a tertiary care center in India with 33 patients monitored over several years.
  • In the study, 24 patients initially underwent surgery with varying outcomes: 12 achieved early remission, 3 delayed remission, and 9 exhibited persistent disease over an average follow-up of 5 years.
  • RFA was used as a treatment for 10 patients, primarily as a first-line option, with 7 achieving remission at the last follow-up; complications were minimal, suggesting RFA can be as effective as surgery for managing TIO but may require additional treatment
