Unlabelled: Glioblastoma (GBM) (grade IV glioma) is the most fatal brain tumor, with a median survival of just 14 months despite current treatments. Temozolomide (TMZ), an alkylating agent used with radiation, faces challenges such as systemic toxicity, poor absorption, and drug resistance. To enhance TMZ effectiveness, we developed poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) liposomes co-loaded with TMZ and O6-benzylguanine (O6-BG) for targeted glioma therapy.

Background And Aims: The lack of a dedicated pain service catering to the postsurgical period has resulted in the origination of the pain-period gap. This has led to a resurgence of transitional pain service (TPS). Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility of TPS in pain practice among postsurgical cancer patients and its prevention of persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP), culminating in chronic pain catastrophising.

Purpose: Lateral pelvic node dissection (LPLND) is indicated in the surgical management of clinically significant pelvic lymphadenopathy associated with rectal malignancies. However, procedure-related morbidity, including the incidence and predisposing factors for lymphoceles arising in this setting have not been adequately evaluated.

Methods: This retrospective single-institution study included 183 patients with nonmetastatic, lateral node-positive rectal cancer undergoing total mesorectal excision with LPLND between June 2014 and May 2023 to determine the incidence and severity of postoperative complications using the Clavien-Dindo system, with logistic regression performed to model a relationship between lymphocele-development and potentially-predictive variables.

The Government of India (GOI) has launched a nationwide cervical, breast and oral cancer prevention and control program. However, the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), a nationwide survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), GOI, has shown concerning results on screening uptake by both men and women across India. This study was conducted to describe the uptake of cancer screening by women residing in Uttar Pradesh (UP), the largest state of India.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the treatment patterns for brain metastases among radiation oncologists within the Federation of Asian Organizations for Radiation Oncology (FARO).
  • Conducted via an online survey, responses were gathered from 32 radiation oncologists across 13 countries, revealing that most worked in academic centers and utilized SRS or fSRT for treatment.
  • The results indicated common practices, such as a preference for treating fewer and smaller brain metastases, but highlighted the need for broader surveys that include community hospitals to get a more comprehensive understanding of care patterns.

Comparative analysis of canine and human HtrA2 to delineate its role in apoptosis and cancer.

Biochem J

November 2024

Integrated Biophysics and Structural Biology Lab, Advanced Centre for Treatment Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai 410210, India.

Therapeutically, targeting the pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins has been one of the major approaches behind devising strategies to combat associated diseases. Human high-temperature requirement serine protease A2 (hHtrA2), which induces apoptosis through both caspase-dependent and independent pathways is implicated in several diseases including cancer, ischemic heart diseases, and neurodegeneration, thus making it a promising target molecule. In the recent past, the canine model has gained prominence in the understanding of human pathophysiology that was otherwise limited to the rodent system.

Custom made brachytherapy applicator for squamous cell carcinoma of oral commissures.

J Cancer Res Ther

July 2024

Department of Dental and Prosthetics Surgery, Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Unit of Tata Memorial Center, Guwahati, Aasam, India.

Primary treatment with brachytherapy for oral cancer is uncommon in large malignant lesions; however, it is preferred by radiation oncologists for initial and smaller-sized lesions in compromised anatomical locations. The purpose of this report is to introduce and discuss the fabrication of a customized brachytherapy applicator for a case of well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral commissures using a radiotherapy thermoplastic mold (RTM). The RTM was molded into the shape of tongs and two acrylic wings were attached to these customized tongs to secure five high-dose radiotherapy catheter tubes.

Molecular techniques in haematopathology: what and how?

Histopathology

January 2025

Laboratory Medical Immunology, Department of Immunology, Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Here we review the 'what and how' of molecular techniques used in the context of haematopathological diagnostics of both lymphoid and myeloid neoplasms. Keeping in mind that the required resources for molecular testing are not universally available, we will not only discuss novel and emerging techniques that allow more high-throughput and sophisticated analyses of lymphoid and myeloid neoplasms, but also the more classical, low-cost alternatives and even some workarounds for molecular testing approaches. In this review we also address other key aspects around molecular techniques for haematopatholgy diagnostics, including preanalytics, data interpretation, and data management, bioinformatics, and interlaboratory precision and performance evaluation.
