Mitigating treatment failure of pulmonary pre-extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis: The role of new and repurposed drugs.

J Microbiol Immunol Infect

August 2024

Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan; International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Pre-extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (pre-XDR-TB) is a challenging form of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) that includes resistance to fluoroquinolones, and this study evaluated whether new or repurposed drugs improved treatment outcomes.
  • Among 327 MDR-TB patients, those with fluoroquinolone-resistant strains (FQ-resistant) were less likely to succeed in treatment than those with susceptible strains; however, using at least two new or repurposed drugs significantly reduced treatment failure in FQ-resistant cases.
  • The findings suggest that while new or repurposed drugs did not change outcomes for FQ-susceptible MDR-TB patients, their proper use is

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find risk factors linked to early chronic kidney disease (CKD) in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients using data from the Taiwan Diabetes Registry.
  • The research involved 2,217 patients, categorizing them into an early CKD group and a control group, and utilized logistic regression to analyze clinical characteristics and linear regression for predicting kidney function indicators.
  • Key risk factors identified included age, systolic blood pressure, glycated hemoglobin, and triglycerides, with a noted bidirectional relationship between urine-albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

The carnivorous pitcher plants of the genus have long been known for their ethnobotanical applications. In this study, we prepared various extracts from the pitcher, stem, and leaf of using 100% ethanol and assessed their inhibitory effects on key enzymes related to skin aging, including elastase, tyrosinase, and hyaluronidase. The cytotoxicity of the stem extract of on H838 human lung carcinoma cells were also characterized by effects on cell survival, migration, proliferation, apoptosis induction, and DNA damage.

Colorectal neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN) are rare malignancies with unclear boundaries and poor prognoses. Our study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of these diseases, identify prognostic factors, and explore potential therapeutic targets. We collected and analyzed clinicopathological data of NEC and MiNEN in our hospital from 2011 to 2020.

Bi-manual therapy (BT), mirror therapy (MT), and robot-assisted rehabilitation have been conducted in hand training in a wide range of stages in stroke patients; however, the mechanisms of action during training remain unclear. In the present study, participants performed hand tasks under different intervention conditions to study bilateral sensorimotor cortical communication, and EEG was recorded. A multifactorial design of the experiment was used with the factors of manipulating objects (O), robot-assisted bimanual training (RT), and MT.

Effects of Different Pedaling Positions on Muscle Usage and Energy Expenditure in Amateur Cyclists.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

September 2022

Department of Physical Therapy and Graduate Institute of Rehabilitation Science, China Medical University, Taichung 406040, Taiwan.

Background: Inappropriate cycling positions may affect muscle usage strategy and raise the level of fatigue or risk of sport injury. Dynamic bike fitting is a growing trend meant to help cyclists select proper bikes and adjust them to fit their ergometry. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the "knee forward of foot" (KFOF) distance, an important dynamic bike fitting variable, influences the muscle activation, muscle usage strategy, and rate of energy expenditure during cycling.

Nucleic acid amplification tests reduce delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Sci Rep

July 2022

Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied how nucleic acid amplification (NAA) tests help diagnose pulmonary TB (PTB) faster and more accurately.
  • They looked at three groups of PTB patients: one group used NAA tests upfront, another had them added later, and the last didn’t use them at all.
  • The results showed that using NAA tests, especially upfront, led to fewer deaths before treatment and a quicker start to treatment, while also reducing the chances of misdiagnosis.

We demonstrate a working prototype of an optical breast imaging system involving parallel-plate architecture and a dual-direction scanning scheme designed in combination with a mammography machine; this system was validated in a pilot study to demonstrate its application in imaging healthy and malignant breasts in a clinical environment. The components and modules of the self-developed imaging system are demonstrated and explained, including its measuring architecture, scanning mechanism, and system calibration, and the reconstruction algorithm is presented. Additionally, the evaluation of feature indices that succinctly demonstrate the corresponding transmission measurements may provide insight into the existence of malignant tissue.
