Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex metabolic disorder caused by the interaction of environmental factors and multiple genes. The genetic background of T2DM is complex and remains to be fully elucidated. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are negative regulators of gene expression and several miRNAs are associated with the development of T2DM.

Objective: To study the correlation between miR-21 and Treg/Th17 ratio in the microenvironment of rats with hepatocellular carcinoma.

Methods: Diethylnitrosamine was used to build the hepatocellular carcinoma model of rats; the content of Treg cells and Th17 cells and the expression of miR-21 in the peripheral blood of rats with hepatocellular carcinoma were detected. The statistical analysis was performed on the correlation between miR-21 expression and Treg/Th17 ratio.

This study aimed to evaluate cone-beam computed tomography setup errors during cervical cancer treatment and the effects of these errors on acute radiation toxicity and treatment efficacy. A total of 170 cervical cancer patients were randomly divided into image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT; 86 patients) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT; 84 patients) groups to receive IGRT and IMRT, respectively. After correcting setup errors for the 86 patients in the IGRT group, the X-, Y- and Z-axis errors were smaller than the corresponding errors before correction (P < 0.

The P2X7 inhibitor, brilliant blue G (BBG), has been reported as a neuroprotective drug against a variety of disorders, including neuropathic pain and brain ischemia. Currently, no studies have examined the potential for BBG to provide neuroprotection in animal models of TBI. The aim of the present study was to investigate the neuroprotective effect of BBG on TBI and to determine the underlying mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • Chloroquine (CQ) has shown potential as an autophagy inhibitor and was investigated for neuroprotective effects in traumatic brain injury (TBI) models.
  • The study involved administering CQ to rats immediately post-injury and assessing its impact on brain edema and functional deficits using various tests.
  • Results indicated that CQ treatment reduced brain edema and improved motor and cognitive functions by suppressing neuronal autophagy and inflammatory cytokine levels in the hippocampus.

This study investigated the curative and toxic effects of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT), using repeated CT scans for field reduction in older non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. 3D-CRT was administered to 36 older patients with NSCLC, and irradiation fields included the primary lesion and metastatic lymph nodes. After CT localization scanning, images were fed into a treatment planning system to delineate the gross tumor volume (GTV)1 and prepare Plan 1.

We determined the expression and function of B cell translocation gene 1 (BTG1) in thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid samples were obtained from cancer lesions (n=83) and adjacent normal tissue (n=35) in thyroid cancer patients immediately after endoscopic biopsy. BTG1 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry and western blotting.

The aim of this study was to determine the expression and function of epithelial membrane protein 1 (EMP1) in gastric carcinoma. Gastric samples were taken from cancer lesions and adjacent normal tissue in gastric cancer patients immediately after endoscopic biopsy. A portion of the sample was either fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and embedded in paraffin for immunohistochemistry or stored in liquid nitrogen for western blotting.

TPX2 (targeting protein for xenopus kinesin-like protein 2), a microtubule-associated protein, plays an important role in the formation of the mitotic spindle. Abnormal expression of TPX2 in various types of malignant tumors has been reported, but less is known for medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). We investigated the expression of TPX2 in human MTC tissues and its potential use as a therapeutic target.

This study aimed to analyze the expression and clinical significance of cyclin G2 (CCNG2) in thyroid carcinoma and the biological effects of CCNG2 overexpression in a cell line. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were used to analyze CCNG2 protein expression in 63 cases of thyroid cancer and normal tissues to allow the relationship with clinical factors to be assessed. CCNG2 lentiviral and empty vectors were transfected into the thyroid cancer K1 cell line.

This study aimed to analyze the expression, clinical significance of B cell translocation gene 1 (BTG1) in breast carcinoma and the biological effect in its cell line by BTG1 overexpression. Immunohistochemistry and western blot were used to analyze BTG1 protein expression in 72 cases of breast cancer and 36 cases of normal tissues to study the relationship between BTG1 expression and clinical factors. Recombinant lentiviral vector was constructed to over-express EMP-1 and then infect breast cancer MCF-7 cell line.

Altered expression or function of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) has been shown to be associated with cancer risk but assessment of gene polymorphisms has resulted in inconclusive data. Here a search of published data was made and 22 studies were recruited, covering 20,025 case and control subjects, for meta- analyses of the association of MnSOD polymorphisms with the risk of prostate, esophageal, and lung cancers. The data on 12 studies of prostate cancer (including 4,182 cases and 6,885 controls) showed a statistically significant association with the risk of development in co-dominant models and dominant models, but not in the recessive model.

Objective: To study the relationship between clinical characteristics of lung cancer patients and their occupational exposure.

Methods: 2110 workers (≥ 20 years) who had been engaged in occupation that were exposed to risk factors of lung cancer, were asked to fill in questionnaires which included social demographic characteristics, length of service, smoking history and habits etc. 378 cases with lung cancer admitted in the Tangshan Worker's Hospital were selected and their clinical data including general information, symptoms or signs other than lungs, CT findings, histological type of the tumor, metastasis of tumors etc.
