Background: Early diagnosis of breast cancer has always been a difficult clinical challenge. We developed a deep-learning model EDL-BC to discriminate early breast cancer with ultrasound (US) benign findings. This study aimed to investigate how the EDL-BC model could help radiologists improve the detection rate of early breast cancer while reducing misdiagnosis.

Oncol Lett

June 2023

Department of Medical Laboratory, Tangshan People's Hospital, Tangshan, Hebei 063000, P.R. China.

Lung cancer (LC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is the leading cause of cancer-associated death. Serum markers that exhibit high sensitivity and specificity for LC may assist in the diagnosis and prognosis of LC. The banked serum samples from 599 individuals, including 201 healthy controls, 124 patients with benign lung diseases, and 274 LC cases, were used.

In this retrospective study, we analyzed the expression of lymphocyte activating gene 3 (LAG-3) and fibrinogen-like protein 1 (FGP1) mRNA and the corresponding proteins in 78 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) to evaluate the clinical significance and prognostic value. mRNA and protein expression were analyzed by reverse transcription PCR and Western blotting, respectively. The expression of LAG-3 and FGL1 mRNA and the corresponding proteins in tumor tissues were significantly increased in comparison with the normal esophageal mucosa.

Background: Apatinib, a highly selective VEGFR2 inhibitor, significantly improved efficacy versus placebo as a third- and later-line treatment for advanced gastric cancer in phase 2 and 3 trials. This prospective, single-arm, multicenter phase IV AHEAD study was conducted to verify the safety and efficacy of apatinib in patients with advanced or metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma after at least two lines of systematic therapy in clinical practice settings.

Methods: Patients with advanced gastric cancer who had previously failed at least two lines of chemotherapy received oral apatinib until disease progression, death or unacceptable toxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • - Immune checkpoint inhibitors, like toripalimab, are effective in treating various cancers by enhancing the body's immune response, but can occasionally lead to serious side effects such as cytokine-release syndrome.
  • - A patient with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma received treatment combining toripalimab and chemotherapy, experiencing severe side effects including fever, low blood pressure, and signs of organ dysfunction just days after starting.
  • - Laboratory tests revealed elevated cytokine levels, confirming a diagnosis of cytokine-release syndrome, which progressed quickly and resulted in the patient's death within five days of treatment.

  • Oxidative stress (OS) results from an imbalance between oxidative species and antioxidants, playing a crucial role in diseases like liver cancer and chronic liver disease from hepatitis viruses.* -
  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are key players in oxidative stress, contributing to liver damage and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through a complex interplay of lipid accumulation, inflammation, and immune responses.* -
  • Understanding oxidative stress mechanisms is vital for developing new therapeutic strategies against HCC, as it influences both tumor progression and treatment resistance.*

Objective: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is considered as a pivotal factor for various metabolic, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases. However, there is currently a paucity of relevant studies on the association between long-term level and change of TyG-index and cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) risk. We aimed to explore the risk of CMDs in relation to the long-term level and change of TyG-index.

November 2022

Central Laboratory, the Cancer Institute, Tangshan People's Hospital, Tangshan 063001, China.

Primary liver cancer (hereinafter referred to as HCC) is the sixth most common type of cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Since patients in the early stage of HCC are typically asymptomatic and there are currently no specific detection methods for the early stage of HCC, the majority of patients are diagnosed in the late stage. Exosomes carry proteins, non-coding RNAs, such as cyclic RNAs (circRNAs), and other biological molecules.

DNA methylation plays an important physiological function in cells, and environmental changes result in fluctuations in DNA methylation levels. Metal ions have become both environmental and health concerns, as they have the potential to disrupt the genomic DNA methylation status, even on specific sequences. In the current research, the methylation status of two typical repetitive DNA elements, i.

Article Synopsis
  • - N-methyladenosine (mA) is a major modification in eukaryotic mRNA that significantly impacts cellular functions in cancer, necessitating a deeper understanding of its mechanisms.
  • - The study identifies METTL3, an enzyme that adds mA, as being overexpressed in cervical cancer, where it acts as an oncogene by promoting the degradation of NR4A1 mA-modified transcripts.
  • - The results suggest that overexpression of NR4A1 can slow down cancer progression by recruiting a complex that represses the AKT1 gene, highlighting the role of mA in cervical cancer dynamics.
