Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer worldwide, and the current standard screening method, mammography, often requires invasive biopsy procedures for further assessment. Recent research has explored microRNAs (miRNAs) in circulating blood as potential biomarkers for early breast cancer diagnosis. In this study, we employed a multi-modal spectroscopy approach, combining attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to comprehensively characterize the full-spectrum fingerprints of RNA biomarkers in the blood serum of breast cancer patients.

Background: Existing literature has highlighted structural, physiological, and pathological disparities among abdominal adipose tissue (AAT) sub-depots. Accurate separation and quantification of these sub-depots are crucial for advancing our understanding of obesity and its comorbidities. However, the absence of clear boundaries between the sub-depots in medical imaging data has challenged their separation, particularly for internal adipose tissue (IAT) sub-depots.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer globally. Early detection is crucial and can be achieved by detecting cancer biomarkers in blood, such as circulating miRNAs (microRNAs). In this study, we present a label-free detection method based on broadband multi-resonant infrared metasurface for surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy to detect miRNAs.

Background: Obesity and related metabolic disturbances including diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia predict future cognitive decline. Asia has a high prevalence of both obesity and metabolic disease, potentially amplifying the future burden of dementia in the region. We aimed to investigate the impact of adiposity and metabolic risk on cognitive function in Asian populations, using an epidemiological analysis and a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) study.

Background: This study reports trends in pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and factors affecting clinical outcomes by age group.
Methods: We identified 4,561 OHCA patients younger than 18 years between January 2009 and December 2018 in the Korean OHCA Registry. The patients were divided into four groups: group 1 (1 year or younger), group 2 (1 to 5 years), group 3 (6 to 12 years), and group 4 (13 to 17 years).

Pneumonia can be difficult to diagnose since its symptoms are too variable, and the radiographic signs are often very similar to those seen in other illnesses such as a cold or influenza. Deep neural networks have shown promising performance in automated pneumonia diagnosis using chest X-ray radiography, allowing mass screening and early intervention to reduce the severe cases and death toll. However, they usually require many well-labelled chest X-ray images for training to achieve high diagnostic accuracy.

Objective: Falls are one of the most frequently occurring adverse events among hospitalized patients. The Morse Fall Scale, which has been widely used for fall risk assessment, has the two limitations of low specificity and difficulty in practical implementation. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an interpretable machine learning model for prediction of falls to be integrated in an electronic medical record (EMR) system.

Given the spasmodic increment in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), world is on the verge of "post-antibiotic era". It is anticipated that current SARS-CoV2 pandemic would worsen the situation in future, mainly due to the lack of new/next generation of antimicrobials. In this context, nanoscale materials with antimicrobial potential have a great promise to treat deadly pathogens.

Thyroid hormones (TH), adiponectin and brown adipose tissue (BAT) are regulators of energy homoeostasis. Influence of BAT activity on the relationship between TH and adiponectin remains unexplored. The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between TH and adiponectin and to clarify the impact of active BAT on the metabolic effects of adiponectin before and after the correction of thyrotoxicosis.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a promising weapon to combat obesity and metabolic disease. BAT is thermogenic and consumes substantial amounts of glucose and fatty acids as fuel for thermogenesis and energy expenditure. To study BAT function in large human longitudinal cohorts, safe and precise detection methodologies are needed.

Unlabelled: An ageing population with higher rates of helping seeking behaviour and treatment utilization is a worldwide phenomenon with no exception to Singapore. As elderly patients are fast becoming an increasing large part of our surgical practice, their long term outcomes are particularly important.
Objective: We take stock of our local experience in a high volume tertiary centre in Singapore, Tan Tock Seng Hospital by reviewing the number of surgical procedures performed for elderly patients (65 years old and above) across a decade and reviewing their post-operative outcomes.

Both hyperthyroidism and elevated plasma branched chain amino acids (BCAA) are associated with insulin resistance. BCAA utilization and clearance relative to thyroid status changes remains unclear. We investigate amino acids changes, specifically BCAA, during the transition from hyperthyroidism to euthyroidism, and the impact of active brown adipose tissue (BAT) on the metabolic effects of BCAA.

Objective: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) controls metabolic rate through thermogenesis. As its regulatory factors during the transition from hyperthyroidism to euthyroidism are not well established, our study investigated the relationships between supraclavicular brown adipose tissue (sBAT) activity and physiological/metabolic changes with changes in thyroid status.
Design: Participants with newly diagnosed Graves' disease were recruited.

Background: The homeostatic euthyroid set point of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis of any given individual is unique and oscillates narrowly within substantially broader normal population ranges of circulating free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), otherwise termed 'thyroid function test (TFT)'. We developed a mathematical algorithm codenamed Thyroid-SPOT that effectively reconstructs the personalized set point in open-loop situations and evaluated its performance in a retrospective patient sample.
Methods: We computed the set points of 101 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for non-functioning thyroid disease using Thyroid-SPOT on each patient's own serial post-thyroidectomy TFT.

Thyroid hormones (TH) control brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation and differentiation, but their subsequent homeostatic response following BAT activation remains obscure. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cold- and capsinoids-induced BAT activation and TH changes between baseline and 2 hours post-intervention. Nineteen healthy subjects underwent F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography (F-FDG PET) and whole-body calorimetry (WBC) after 2 hours of cold exposure (~14.

Background: Adipocyte-derived hormones play a role in insulin sensitivity and energy homeostasis. However, the relationship between circulating fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), adipocytokines and cold-induced supraclavicular brown adipose tissue (sBAT) activation is underexplored.
Objective: Our study aimed to investigate the relationships between cold-induced sBAT activity and plasma FGF21 and adipocytokines levels in healthy adults.

Aims: Young-onset T2D (YT2D) is associated with a more fulminant course and greater propensity for diabetic complications. The association of PAX4 R192H (rs2233580) variation with YT2D was inconsistent partly because of its Asian-specificity and under-representation of Asians in international consortiums. Interestingly, in our preliminary YT2D (mean = 25 years old) cohort, the prevalence of PAX4 R192H variant was remarkably higher (21.
