Background: Non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAHs) are thought to have a benign clinical course compared to aneurysmal SAHs. The aim of this study is to report the clinical course and outcomes of non-aneurysmal SAHs in a large single-center study.
Methods: The patients with non-aneurysmal SAHs were screened from Tampere University Hospital from 2005 to 2020.

Introduction: Open tibia fracture (OTF) causes a considerable increase in morbidity and risk for complications compared to closed fractures. The most significant OTF complication leading to morbidity is commonly considered to be fracture-related infection (FRI). In September 2016, Tampere University Hospital (TAUH) introduced a treatment protocol for OTFs based on the BOAST 4 guideline.

Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is a neurological emergency, affecting a younger population than individuals experiencing an ischemic stroke; aSAH is associated with a high risk of mortality and permanent disability. The noble gas xenon has been shown to possess neuroprotective properties as demonstrated in numerous preclinical animal studies. In addition, a recent study demonstrated that xenon could attenuate a white matter injury after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL) is a Hodgkin lymphoma expressing functional B-cell receptors (BCR). Recently, we described a dual stimulation model of IgD+ lymphocyte-predominant cells by Moraxella catarrhalis antigen RpoC and its superantigen MID/hag, associated with extralong CDR3 and HLA-DRB1*04 or HLADRB1* 07 haplotype. The aim of the present study was to extend the antigen screening to further bacteria and viruses.

Background: The quality of surgical margins is the most important factor affecting local control in soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Despite this, there is no universally accepted consensus on the definition of an adequate surgical margin or on which patients should be offered radiation therapy. This study focuses on local control and its prognostic factors in patients with trunk wall and extremity STS.

Background: Lumbar disc degeneration (LDD) is associated with low back pain (LBP). Although both insomnia and mental distress appear to influence the pain experience, their role in the association between LDD and LBP is uncertain. Our objective was to investigate the role of co-occurring insomnia and mental distress in the association between LDD and LBP-related disability.

Background: We characterized the relation of primary treatment approaches to the need of later surgical interventions and the outcomes of patellar dislocation in patients with patellofemoral osteochondral fracture (OCF).
Methods: Overall, 134 patients with OCF were categorized in two groups according to treatment approach: primary surgery (operation within 90 days from injury) and conservative treatment. Data on surgical procedures, OCF characteristics, and patellofemoral anatomy were retrospectively collected.

Objective: Posttraumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) is a recognized long-term complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The authors assessed the incidence and risk factors of PTH and its association with outcome in patients with TBI who were treated in the intensive care unit (ICU).
Methods: The authors used the Finnish Intensive Care Consortium (FICC) database to retrospectively identify all adult patients with TBI treated in 4 Finnish tertiary ICUs during 2003-2013.

Background: Surgical treatment options for end-stage ankle osteoarthritis (OA) include ankle arthrodesis (AA) and total ankle replacement (TAR). We investigated the national incidence of AA and TAR and assessed trends in the surgical management of ankle OA in Finland between 1997 and 2018.
Methods: The Finnish Care Register for Health Care was used to calculate the incidence of AA and TAR based on sex and different age groups.

Purpose: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery is prone to postoperative complications, leading to high reoperation rates. The global alignment and proportion (GAP) score is a novel method to predict mechanical complications (MC) based on the optimal parameters related to individual pelvic incidence. The aim of this study was to determine the cut-off point and the predictive value of the GAP score for those MCs that require reoperation.

Objectives: The current bifurcation of the acute stroke care pathway requires prehospital separation of strokes caused by large vessel occlusion. The first four binary items of the Finnish Prehospital Stroke Scale (FPSS) identify stroke in general, while the fifth binary item alone identifies stroke due to large vessel occlusion. The straightforward design is both easy for paramedics and statistically beneficial.

The research of rare and devastating orphan diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has been limited by the rarity of the disease itself. The prognosis is poor-the prevalence of IPF is only approximately four times the incidence, limiting the recruitment of patients to trials and studies of the underlying biology. Global biobanking efforts can dramatically alter the future of IPF research.

Background: Patients with severe aortic stenosis and left ventricular systolic dysfunction have a poor prognosis, and this may result in inferior survival also after aortic valve replacement. The outcomes of transcatheter and surgical aortic valve replacement were investigated in this comparative analysis.
Methods: The retrospective nationwide FinnValve registry included data on patients who underwent transcatheter or surgical aortic valve replacement with a bioprosthesis for severe aortic stenosis.

Previous studies have demonstrated that environmental and temporal factors may affect the incidence of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). Here, we aimed to investigate the hypothesis that national holidays and weekends influence the incidence of surgery for ATAAD. For the period 1st of January 2005 until 31st of December 2019, we investigated a hypothesised effect of (country-specific) national holidays and weekends on the frequency of 2995 surgical repairs for ATAAD at 10 Nordic cities included in the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (NORCAAD) collaboration.

Purpose: Growth failure is common in radiotherapy-treated long-term survivors of pediatric brain tumors, but studies on longitudinal growth in this patient group are lacking. Here, the aim was to assess the changes in growth patterns before and after brain tumor diagnosis, the adult height, and the risk factors for compromised growth. The incidence and treatment practices of growth hormone deficiency were analyzed.

Background: Capecitabine- or 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based chemotherapy is widely used in many solid tumours, but is associated with cardiotoxicity. S-1 is a fluoropyrimidine with low rates of cardiotoxicity, but evidence regarding the safety of switching to S-1 after 5-FU- or capecitabine-associated cardiotoxicity is scarce.
Patients And Methods: This retrospective study (NCT04260269) was conducted at 13 centres in 6 countries.
