This prospective observational study aimed to compare abdominal hysterectomy (AH), vaginal hysterectomy (VH), and total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) in terms of oxidative stress (OS) by measuring serum levels of total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI). Of the 3 groups, namely, AH, VH, and TLH, 22 patients were enrolled in each to investigate the aim of the study mentioned above. Patient demographics, clinical and surgical characteristics, and preoperative and postoperative (0th and 24th hours) serum TAS, TOS, and OSI levels were investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between hypothyroidism and oxidative stress markers in women, specifically assessing conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and nonautoimmune hypothyroidism after treatment with levothyroxine.
  • A total of 116 women participated, with findings showing that both hypothyroid groups exhibited lower levels of important antioxidant compounds compared to healthy controls, indicating a shift towards oxidative stress.
  • Despite treatment with levothyroxine, the hypothyroid groups did not show significant improvement in oxidative stress marker levels, suggesting that the treatment may not effectively address the oxidative stress associated with these conditions.

Background: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI), a serious side effect of thoracic radiotherapy, can lead to acute radiation pneumonitis (RP) and chronic pulmonary fibrosis (PF). Despite various interventions, no effective protocol exists to prevent pneumonitis. Oxytocin (OT), known for its anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and antioxidant properties, has not been explored for its potential in mitigating RILI.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of pancreatic steatosis (PS) using transabdominal ultrasonography in Turkish gastroenterology clinics and identify associated factors.
  • A total of 1,700 volunteers revealed a PS prevalence of 68.9%, with factors like age, BMI, and metabolic syndrome linked to its severity.
  • The study also found that 11.8% of PS cases were in lean individuals, who were generally younger and had lower metabolic risk factors compared to those with non-lean PS.

Background and objective Bladder cancer (BC) is a common urothelial neoplasm, with non-muscle invasive forms comprising about 75% of cases and generally having better outcomes than muscle-invasive types. Accurate preoperative grading and staging of BC are essential for appropriate treatment planning. This study investigates the efficacy of computerized tomography (CT) in correlating the morphological features of tumors to predict the histopathological grades of BC.

Background: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using locking plates is a widely adopted treatment for displaced proximal humerus fractures. Various augmentation techniques have been developed to enhance the stability of plate fixation. Among these, iliac bone autograft is notable for its advantages over allografts, such as ready availability and the elimination of costs and risks associated with disease transmission.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute stress from emergencies like pandemics can harm healthcare providers if not identified early; this study aims to validate the Acute Stress Scale (EASE) for Turkish healthcare settings.
  • The research involved 127 healthcare professionals treating COVID-19 patients, using data collection methods including the EASE scale and individual forms, with confirmatory factor analysis conducted for validation.
  • The Turkish EASE scale shows strong reliability and validity, indicating it can effectively aid in recognizing and addressing acute stress in healthcare workers, particularly in crises and isolation situations.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the Systemic Inflammation Index (SII), Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), and Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) in HT and NIH, as well as their diagnostic value to predict the presence of inflammation.

Subjects And Methods: The study included 505 patients, including 190 healthy controls, 166 euthyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), 91 hypothyroid HT, and 58 non- immunogenic hypothyroidism (NIH) patients. The records of the patients in each group were reviewed retrospectively.

: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is characterized by pancreatic gland inflammation, and its clinical course ranges from mild to severe. Predicting the severity of AP early and reliably is important. In this study, we investigate the potential use of the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score as a prognostic marker in acute pancreatitis.

  • * Patients undergoing surgery for DDH were grouped based on different factors like age and family history, with the research focusing on the histological features and the presence of specific proteins (MMP-2, MMP-9, and ADAMTS-7).
  • * Findings show that the ligamentum teres has signs of moderate inflammation and other changes, and that the levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, and ADAMTS-7 are positively linked to these tissue changes

Background: This study aimed to evaluate oxidative damage by measuring erythrocytic reduced/oxidized glutathione as an intracellular thiol pool and serum thiol/disulfide homeostasis as an extracellular thiol pool in patients with opioid use disorder.

Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 33 male patients diagnosed with opioid use disorder and 30 healthy male controls were included. Sociodemographic characteristics and psychometric analyzes were performed and addiction characteristics (duration and amount of heroin use, usage methods) were recorded.

  • Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is a prevalent and complex issue with varied treatment options and no definitive guidelines, leading to differing management practices internationally.
  • A comprehensive survey with 336 responses from specialists in 49 countries explored current medical and surgical strategies for NOA, analyzing results against existing guidelines and offering expert recommendations.
  • Key findings included diverse approaches to hormonal therapy, significant variation in sperm retrieval success rates, and differing protocols around varicocele repair and follicle-stimulating hormone cutoff levels for sperm retrieval.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols challenge the conventional and rigid methods of surgery and anesthesia and bring about novel changes that are quite drastic. The core principle of the protocol is to minimize the metabolic disturbance caused by surgical injury, facilitate the restoration of functions in a brief period, and promote the resumption of normal activity at the earliest. To compare the outcomes of ERAS and standard protocol for patients who have undergone radical cystectomy (RC) with ileal conduit urinary diversion.

Background: 'Mo-fi-disc' is a new scoring system that quantifies degeneration of the lumbar spine and predicts the intensity of low back pain (LBP). However, its association with LBP-related disability is unknown. In the present study, we aimed to analyze whether 'Mo-fi-disc' scoring system could predict LBP-related disability and distinguish patients with LBP from asymptomatic subjects, while the spine medicine marching towards the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machines used in coronary artery bypass grafting surgeries on cerebral perfusion by performing cerebral oximetry monitoring [near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)], S100-β protein measurements, and neurocognitive function assessment tests using both pulsatile and non-pulsatile modes.

Methods: A total of 44 patients, 22 non-pulsatile (Group NP) and 22 pulsatile (Group P), were included in the study. Hemodynamic parameters, arterial blood gas values, NIRS values and blood S100β protein levels were analyzed at five points: pre-induction (T1), initiation of CPB (T2), termination of CPB (T3), end of surgery (T4), and postoperative 24 h (T5).

Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy belonging to the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors, primarily affecting soft tissues such as the pelvis, retroperitoneum, and chest wall. Although it predominantly involves these soft tissues, extraosseous Ewing sarcoma can also occur in solid organs, including the pancreas. Here, we present a rare case of a 4-year-old girl diagnosed with primary extraosseous Ewing sarcoma of the pancreas.
