Background: C5 palsy is a frequent complication following cervical spine surgery, particularly after posterior approaches. Although several risk factors have been proposed, the incidence of C5 palsy after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) remains less well understood. This study aims to elucidate the risk factors and neurological recovery associated with C5 palsy following ACDF.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a progressive myocardial disorder characterized by impaired cardiac contraction and ventricular dilation. However, some patients with DCM improve when experiencing left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR). Currently, the detailed association between genotypes and clinical outcomes, including LVRR, particularly among children, remains uncertain.

Introduction: In the early postoperative period after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), joint range of motion (ROM) limitation and increased stiffness due to pain are commonly observed. Previous studies have reported that a single bout of foam rolling (FR) can acutely increase ROM and pain threshold on the contralateral (non-intervention) side in healthy participants. In this study, we aimed to expand this knowledge for TKA rehabilitation and investigated the acute effects of FR intervention on the non-operative side on ROM, stiffness, and pain of the operative side in postoperative patients within the first week after TKA.

Introduction: This study compared the masses and amounts of intramuscular non-contractile tissue of multiple lower extremity muscles measured using an ultrasound imaging device, as well as the mobility and balance ability and cognitive function between community-dwelling older adults with and without low back pain (LBP).
Methods: Twenty-five community-dwelling older adults were classified into control (CTR) (n = 17, asymptomatic) and LBP (n = 8) groups. The current LBP status in the LBP group was as follows: duration period: 99.

Background: This study aimed to investigate whether self-care foam rolling (FR) intervention, in addition to regular physical therapy, effectively improves pain, knee joint range of motion (ROM), muscle function (knee extension strength and gait speed), and balance function in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during the second and third postoperative weeks.
Methods: A total of 15 patients admitted to the hospital and who underwent TKA for knee osteoarthritis were enrolled. FR was performed for more than 10 min in the morning and 10 min in the afternoon each day from the second to the third postoperative week.

Background: Various complications of permanent pacemaker implantation have been reported. However, late pacemaker lead-related myocardial perforation rarely occurs. Conservative treatment is generally selected, if possible, but open heart surgery or catheter lead removal should be considered in symptomatic patients.

Background: Modified versions of the Objective Prognostic Score (mOPS) needs to be validated to reflect practical palliative care circumstances in Taiwan.
Objectives: We compared the abilities of an mOPS score of 1.5 or higher versus a Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score of 30 or lower to predict 2-week mortality in patients with advanced cancer in Taiwan.

Objective Cortisol-producing adenoma (CPA) is a major subtype of functional adrenal tumors. CPAs are generally treated with adrenalectomy; however, it is difficult to predict the ideal duration of glucocorticoid replacement after resection. This study explored pre-operative factors predictive of glucocorticoid replacement therapy duration after CPA resection.

A new type of sphincterotome released to the market recently has high rotation performance and a freely bendable blade. It is devised to be singly capable of accommodating not only normal anatomy but also cases with surgically altered anatomy. This study was undertaken for clinical evaluation of the usefulness of this new sphincterotome.

Introduction: Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) is a reliable index derived from serum albumin levels, height, and weight. Although various prognostic factors have been studied, the effect of preoperative nutritional status on surgical outcomes remains unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the GNRI in predicting postoperative outcomes of lower gastrointestinal perforation.

Background: Polymyxin-B direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) is an endotoxin adsorption column-based blood purification therapy. Since one of the most potent effects of PMX-DHP is blood pressure elevations, it may be the most effective when it is introduced at the time when the need for vasopressors is the greatest, which, in turn, may reduce mortality.
Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 24 ICUs in Japan.

Background: Timely palliative transition in patients with advanced cancer is essential for their improved quality of life and overall survival (OS). Most prognostic models have been developed focusing on weeks' survival. The current study aimed to compare the accuracies of several indicators, such as the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), Clinicians' Prediction of Survival (CPS), and Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS), for predicting the survival of patients.

The International Consensus on ANA Patterns (ICAP) is an ongoing international initiative dedicated to harmonizing technical and interpretation aspects of the HEp-2 IFA test. Comprised of internationally recognized experts in autoimmunity and HEp-2 IFA testing, ICAP has operated for the last 10 years by promoting accurate reading, interpretation, and reporting of HEp-2 IFA images by professionals involved in various areas related to autoimmune diseases, such as clinical diagnostic laboratories, academic research, IVD industry, and patient care. ICAP operates through continuous information exchange with the international community and encourages the participation of younger experts from all over the world.

Background: Cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of schizophrenia. Although treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) exhibits wide-ranging neuropsychological deficits, factors defining cognitive prognosis in TRS are unclear. We aimed to clarify the association between cognitive dysfunction and factors, such as plasma concentrations of clozapine (CLZ), N-desmethylclozapine (NDMC), and homovanillic acid (HVA), due to differences in antipsychotic responses in patients with schizophrenia.

Background: While the Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) are widely used for the glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus, the differences in the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors and DPP4 inhibitors on energy intake and diabetes-related indicators are unclear.
Methods: This was a subanalysis of the CANTABILE study which compared the effects of canagliflozin and teneligliptin on metabolic factors in Japanese patients with Type 2 diabetes. The changes at 24 weeks from the baseline of the diabetes-related indicators including Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), energy intake and body weight were compared between the canagliflozin and teneligliptin groups.

Purpose To clarify the predominant causative plaque constituent for periprocedural myocardial injury (PMI) following percutaneous coronary intervention: erythrocyte-derived materials, indicated by a high plaque-to-myocardium signal intensity ratio (PMR) at coronary atherosclerosis T1-weighted characterization (CATCH) MRI, or lipids, represented by a high maximum 4-mm lipid core burden index (maxLCBI) at near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular US (NIRS-IVUS). Materials and Methods This retrospective study included consecutive patients who underwent CATCH MRI before elective NIRS-IVUS-guided percutaneous coronary intervention at two facilities. PMI was defined as post-percutaneous coronary intervention troponin T values greater than five times the upper reference limit.

The etiology of sellar xanthogranuloma (SXG) remains unclear,1-5 and the surgical strategy for treating SXG is debatable. In this study, we present the surgical case of a symptomatic SXG associated with Rathke cleft cyst. The intraoperative decision to prevent postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and secure the drainage route is discussed.
