Cancer cells preferentially use aerobic glycolysis to support growth, a metabolic alteration commonly referred to as the 'Warburg effect.' Here, we show that the tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated protein 1 (TRAP1) is crucial for the Warburg effect in human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Objective: To examine the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on early post-rupture tendon repair in a rat model of Achilles tendon rupture using histological and mechanical evaluation.

Methods: An Achilles tendon rupture model was prepared in 90 Wistar rats, which were randomly assigned to EA, manual acupuncture or control groups. Rats in the EA group received EA (pulse width 5 ms; stimulation frequency 50 Hz; stimulation strength 20 μA; stimulation time 20 min) daily from 1 day following model preparation until the day of assessment (either 7 or 10 days after model preparation), when the region of interest was sampled to assess tendon repair using in vitro methods.

It has anatomically been revealed that the rostral part of the rat primary somatosensory cortex (S1) directly projects to the dorsal part of the trigeminal oral subnucleus (dorVo) and the dorsal part of juxtatrigeminal region (dorVjuxt), and that the dorVo and dorVjuxt contain premotoneurons projecting directly to the jaw-opening or jaw-closing motoneurons in the trigeminal motor nucleus (Vmo). However, little is known about how the rostral S1 regulates jaw movements in relation to its corticofugal projections. To address this issue, we performed intracortical microstimulation of the rat rostral S1 by monitoring jaw movements and electromyographic (EMG) activities.

Depression is a risk factor for dementia in general, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), its premorbid signs are commonly observed, and the morbidity of depression is higher in dementia patients. Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is considered to have an even higher depression prevalence and premorbid depression rate than other dementias such as AD. This led to depression being listed as a supportive feature in the 2005 criteria for the clinical diagnosis of DLB.

Background: Lack of high-fidelity simultaneous measurements of pressure and flow velocity in the aorta has impeded the direct validation of the water-hammer formula for estimating regional aortic pulse wave velocity (AO-PWV1) and has restricted the study of the change of beat-to-beat AO-PWV1 under varying physiological conditions in man.

Methods: Aortic pulse wave velocity was derived using two methods in 15 normotensive subjects: 1) the conventional two-point (foot-to-foot) method (AO-PWV2) and 2) a one-point method (AO-PWV1) in which the pressure velocity-loop (PV-loop) was analyzed based on the water hammer formula using simultaneous measurements of flow velocity (Vm) and pressure (Pm) at the same site in the proximal aorta using a multisensor catheter. AO-PWV1 was calculated from the slope of the linear regression line between Pm and Vm where wave reflection (Pb) was at a minimum in early systole in the PV-loop using the water hammer formula, PWV1 = (Pm/Vm)/ρ, where ρ is the blood density.
