Migraine aura status (MAS) is a rare complication of migraine and is listed in the appendix of the International Classification of Headache, Third Edition. MAS occurs in migraine with aura (MwA) patients, with at least three auras occurring over a period of three days. We describe a case of MAS associated with a patient who had a migraine with a typical aura without headache (TAWH).

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a neurological disease that presents with various neurological symptoms and is often accompanied by elevated blood pressure at onset. Neuroimaging, especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), often shows a characteristic parieto-occipital pattern with a symmetrical distribution of changes, reflecting vasogenic edema. Hypertension and endothelial cell damage are the most common causes of PRES.

External compression headaches are relatively rare. However, the consultation rate is low and the disease is not well recognized. This report describes a patient who developed intolerable headaches after wearing a helmet at a construction site and required approximately seven months of leave from work.

As a primary headache disorder, cluster headache (CH) is a severe unilateral headache that recurs at certain times of the year, such as during season changes. It is characterized by autonomic symptoms, such as ipsilateral lacrimal and nasal discharge, as well as an inability to stay still during headache attacks. We report a rare case of CH in a 67-year-old male who presented with a severe right-sided headache lasting 30 minutes to one hour and occurring only during sleep.

Background: Hydrogen (H) has been reported to be effective in reducing hearing loss due to several causes in animal studies. However, no study has examined the effectiveness of H in treating hearing loss in humans. Thus, we investigated whether H is effective for the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL).

Objectives: To identify the risk factors for post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) in adult patients (>19 years).
Methods: 275 adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy between 2009 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Possible risk factors associated with PTH were investigated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.
Our procedure may provide a useful alternative in cases where previous surgeries have failed to eradicate the cholesteatoma.

Purpose: Identification of the endolymphatic sac has failed occasionally. Postoperative complications have also rarely been reported. Given a safer and more reliable surgery, preoperative anatomical assessments are valuable, however, the vestibular aqueduct has seldom been seen with multi-planar reconstruction (MPR) computed tomography (CT) images yet.

Objective: In the assessment of chronic otitis media (COM) and its treatment, patient-reported outcomes are becoming increasingly important. The aim of the present study was to translate and validate the Zurich chronic middle ear inventory (ZCMEI-21) in Japanese in order to provide the first Japanese-language instrument for measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in COM.
Methods: The ZCMEI-21 was translated into Japanese according to published guidelines.

Objective: When the thresholds for VR reconstruction from multi-slice CT images are changed, problems develop when assessing pathologies in the absence of standardized thresholds. The advantages of CBCT include lower radiation exposure compared with other techniques and better visualization of small ear structures. However, a disadvantage is that the scanner provides unstandardized gray scale values, thus not CT numbers (Hounsfield units, HU).

Objective: For successful canal wall up tympanoplasty (CWUT) for the treatment of cholesteatoma, the restoration of stable middle ear aeration is also important; however, little is known about the dynamics of such aeration or the optimal surgical procedure. In this study, alternative additional surgical procedure was selected based on the grade of middle ear aeration during the second-stage operation.
Subjects And Methods: Patients included in this study underwent staged CWUT surgeries with mastoid cortex plasty (MCP) for well-aerated ears (grade 3) and bony mastoid obliteration (BMO) for poorly aerated ears (grade 2-0).

Objective: Hydrogen-rich water, which is a potent antioxidant agent, was investigated for its protective effects against ischemic damage of the cochlea in gerbils.
Methods: The animals were subjected to transient cochlear ischemia by occluding the bilateral vertebral arteries for l5min. Five milliliters of hydrogen-rich saline was then intravenously administered immediately after the insult.

Objective: This study retrospectively investigated whether polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet attached to the bone surface using fibrin glue facilitate faster epithelialization of the mastoid bowl after canal wall-down (CWD) tympanoplasty compared to a simple dressing using poly-N-acetyl-glucosamine (Kichin) sheet.
Materials And Methods: After completion of the CWD tympanoplasty, PGA sheet (n=16, PGA group) with fibrin glue or Kichin sheet (n=38, Kichin group) were placed on the bone surface of the mastoid bowl.
Results: Postoperative epithelialization of the mastoid cavity was significantly (p<0.

Objective: To document the clinical features and associated pure-tone audiometry data in patients with enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct (EVA), and to identify risk factors for fluctuating hearing loss (HL) and vertigo/dizziness in EVA patients.
Methods: In this nationwide survey in Japan, a first survey sheet was mailed to 662 board-certified otolaryngology departments to identify the ones treating EVA patients. A second survey sheet, which contained solicited clinical information and the results of the hearing tests, was mailed to all facilities that reported treating EVA cases.

We report a rare case of hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis (HCP) associated with invasive Aspergillus mastoiditis. A 63-year-old man with diabetes mellitus underwent mastoidectomy because of chronic discharge from his left ear. The mastoidectomy was unsuccessful in resolving purulent otorrhea; moreover, 7 months later, the patient developed left abducens nerve palsy.

Setting: University-affiliated hospital.
Subjects And Methods: In 20 adult patients with unilateral cholesteatoma, the sizes of the osseous eustachian tubes (ETs) and the extent of peritubal and mastoid cell development in healthy and diseased ears were examined using high-resolution cone-beam computed tomography.

Conclusions: In the facial canal, discrepancies between left and right side measurements at each point may be useful in the assessment and diagnosis of facial canal-related pathologies.
Objectives: This study was performed to obtain accurate and high-resolution images of the normal facial canal and measure its widths on cross-sections of the canal at anatomically and clinically important sites using high-resolution cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Methods: CBCT volume data of bilateral temporal bones were obtained from 28 healthy adult volunteers.
