Open Life Sci

July 2024

Central Laboratory, The Affiliated Taizhou People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Taizhou School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University, Taizhou, Jiangsu, 225300, P.R. China.

The present work focused on investigating the role of the altered expression of complement C1s in proliferation and apoptosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells and explore its biological functions in ESCC, so as to lay a theoretical foundation and provide certain clinical reference for diagnosing and treating ESCC. Complement C1s expression within ESCC was assessed, and its clinical pathological characteristics in ESCC patients were analyzed. Subsequently, experiments were performed to further explore the mechanisms by which complement C1s affected ESCC.

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a well-established biostimulator that induces collagenases, is widely used among clinical practice to treat skin aging. However, the precise regulatory effect of PLLA on different dermal cell subsets beyond fibroblast has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we constructed in vivo PLLA injection and in vitro PLLA-adipocyte co-culture models to analyze the regulatory effects of PLLA on the volume, differentiation, lipolysis, and thermogenic capacity of dermal adipocyte.

Novel mutations in LRRC23 cause asthenozoospermia in a nonconsanguineous family.

Asian J Androl

September 2024

State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, The Affiliated Taizhou People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Taizhou School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing 211166, China.

The cause of asthenozoospermia (AZS) is not well understood because of its complexity and heterogeneity. Although some gene mutations have been identified as contributing factors, they are only responsible for a small number of cases. Radial spokes (RSs) are critical for adenosine triphosphate-driven flagellar beating and axoneme stability, which is essential for flagellum motility.

SMAD1 Regulates the Hippocampal Neuronal Death and Ferroptosis via Affecting the Transcription of PDCD4 in Cerebral Ischemia.

Mol Neurobiol

February 2025

Emergency Department, Taizhou People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Taizhou School of Clinical Medicine, Nanjing Medical University, Taizhou, 225300, China.

Results of previous studies suggested that programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) was overexpressed in cerebral ischemia (CI), and mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 1 (SMAD1) is a transcription factor of PDCD4, and it is also elevated in CI; however, the regulatory mechanism of SMAD1/PDCD4 axis in CI remains unclear. The current work has been designed to explore the role and associated mechanisms of SMAD1/PDCD4 in CI. PDCD4 and SMAD1 expressions have been examined by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) method, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis has been performed to determine the potential diagnostic value of PDCD4 and SMAD1.

Recent research emphasised the indispensable role of histone lactylation in the activation of hepatic stellate cells. The VHL mutation is extremely common in clear cell renal cell carcinoma, which normally causes a metabolic shift in cancer cells and increases lactate production, eventually creating a lactate-enriched tumour microenvironment. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) promote tumour progression, which is also vital in clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

Objective: To compare predictive performance for pedicle screw loosening between computed tomography (CT)-based Hounsfield units (HU) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based vertebral bone quality score (VBQ) after lumbar surgery.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on patients who received transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion continuously at our institution from May 2018 to September 2020. On the basis of 12 months' follow-up lumbar radiographs, screw loosening was defined as a clear zone of minimal thickness of ≥1 mm around the pedicle screw on radiography.

Previous studies have found a possible causal relationship between triglycerides and lipid-lowering drugs and valvular disease. The aim of this study was to explore the potential causal relationship between triglycerides and lipid-lowering drugs and valvular disease using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Data sets associated with triglycerides (441,016 participants and 12,321,875 single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]) and cholesterol-lowering drugs (209,638 participants and 9851,867 SNPs) were retrieved from the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) database.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated ferroptosis in granulosa cells contributes to follicular dysfunction of polycystic ovary syndrome driven by hyperandrogenism.

Reprod Biomed Online

September 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Affiliated Taizhou People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Taizhou, China; Graduate School, Nanjing University Of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, China; Graduate School, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China; Graduate School, Dalian Medical University, Liaoning, China. Electronic address:

Research Question: Does hyperandrogenaemia affect the function of ovarian granulosa cells by activating ferroptosis, and could this process be regulated by endoplasmic reticulum stress?

Design: Levels of ferroptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress in granulosa cells were detected in women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) undergoing IVF. Ferroptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress levels of ovarian tissue and follicle development were detected in control mice and PCOS-like mice models, induced by dehydroepiandrosterone. An in-vitro PCOS model of KGN cells was constructed with testosterone and ferroptosis inhibitor Fer-1.
