Introduction: Sepsis is a medical condition characterized by acute organ dysfunction and uncontrolled inflammation. Organ dysfunction in sepsis is the primary cause of mortality in patients with myocardial dysfunction. Levosimendan is a vasodilating and inotropic agent used in patients with acute heart failure and has resulted in decreased morbidity and mortality in these patients.

Background: Population-based studies have shown that adequate magnesium intake is associated with a lower risk of stroke and all-cause mortality. Whether adequate magnesium intake is important for reducing all-cause mortality risk after stroke remains unclear.

Methods: We analyzed data from 917 patients with a self-reported history of stroke from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018.

Predicting diagnosis and survival of bone metastasis in breast cancer using machine learning.

Sci Rep

October 2023

Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, Cancer Center, Department of Orthopedics, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital Affiliated to Qingdao University, Qingdao, Shandong, People's Republic of China.

This study aimed at establishing more accurate predictive models based on novel machine learning algorithms, with the overarching goal of providing clinicians with effective decision-making assistance. We retrospectively analyzed the breast cancer patients recorded in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2016. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for bone metastases in breast cancer, whereas Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to identify prognostic factors for breast cancer with bone metastasis (BCBM).

Nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1) is a multifunctional protein that promotes tumor progression in various cancers and is associated with a poor prognosis of prostate cancer (PCa). However, the mechanism by which NPM1 exerts its malignant potential in PCa remains elusive. Here, we showed that NPM1 is overexpressed in PCa cell lines and tissues and that the dysregulation of NPM1 promotes PCa proliferation.

A Comprehensive Model Based on Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Can Better Predict the Preoperative Histological Grade of Breast Cancer Than a Radiomics Model.

Breast Cancer (Dove Med Press)

October 2023

Department of Radiology, Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province, Shaoxing University, Taizhou, Zhejiang, 312000, People's Republic of China.

Background: Histological grade is an important prognostic factor for patients with breast cancer and can affect clinical decision-making. From a clinical perspective, developing an efficient and non-invasive method for evaluating histological grading is desirable, facilitating improved clinical decision-making by physicians. This study aimed to develop an integrated model based on radiomics and clinical imaging features for preoperative prediction of histological grade invasive breast cancer.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by infection, which has no specific drug at present. UMI-77 can significantly improve the survival rate of septic mice; the detailed role of UMI-77 and its underlying mechanisms in sepsis are not clear. Inflammation array glass chip and proteomic analyses were performed to elucidate the latent mechanism of UMI-77 in the treatment of sepsis.

Background: Endometriosis (EMS) occurs when normal uterine tissue grows outside the uterus and causes chronic pelvic pain and infertility. Endometriosis-associated infertility is thought to be caused by unknown mechanisms. In this study, using necroptosis-related genes, we developed and validated multigene joint signatures to diagnose EMS and explored their biological roles.

Background: Vaccination is the most effective means of preventing outbreaks of infectious diseases, and family ;decision makers play an important role in decision-making regarding family matters and may influence other family members to take an active role in vaccinating children against COVID-19.

Purpose: This study examined the influence of family decision makers on the hesitation of other family members to vaccinate their children against COVID-19.

Methods: A population-based, self-administered online questionnaire was administered in Taizhou, China, from September 1, 2021, to September 15, 2021.

Background And Purpose: To explore the feasibility of the modified blood collection method in pre-deposit autotransfusion in patients undergoing thoracotomy surgery.

Methods: This double-blinded randomised controlled trial enrolled 92 patients from the cardiothoracic surgery department from February 2019 to October 2020.

Results: Compared with the conventional blood collection method, the modified blood collection method avoided blood overflow from the oblique plane of the needle (χ = 61.

Effect of radiation fractionation on IDO1 via the NF-κB/COX2 axis in non-small cell lung cancer.

Electronic address:

Radiotherapy (RT) is the mainstay treatment modality for lung cancer. We recently reported that conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (CRT) with daily fractionation of 2Gy significantly increased the activity of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO1), a known immune checkpoint, which predicted poorer long-term survival in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), while stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) using fractionation size of 10Gy did not increase IDO1 activity and had better survival. Here we hypothesized that the hypofractionated SBRT kind of dose fraction stimulates host antitumor immunity via downregulating IDO1 in which CRT could not.

Purpose: Recent studies had shown that gut microbiota played a significant role in the development of the immune system and may affect the course of airway allergic disease. We conducted this study to determine unique gut microbial associated with allergic disease in children by shotgun gene sequencing.

Methods: We collected fecal samples from children with allergic asthma (n = 23) and allergic rhinitis (n = 18), and healthy control (n = 19).

The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation on the proliferation and differentiation of endogenous neural stem cells (NSCs) in rats with spinal cord injury (SCI). One hundred rats were included and randomly divided into the sham-operation (SO) group, model (MO) group, EA group, and preacupuncture stimulation (PAS) group, with 25 rats in each group. All the rats in the SO group had their spinal cord of thoracic segment T10 exposed but without SCI.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks one of the most common and lethal cancers all over the world. Previous studies suggest that ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2C (UBE2C) serves as an oncogene in human cancers. However, its expression, diagnosis, prognosis and potential mechanisms in HCC remain largely unknown.

Acute liver injury (ALI) may manifest at any phase of sepsis, yet an explicit therapeutic approach remains elusive. In this study, LPS and cecum ligation and puncture (CLP) were utilized to establish an inflammatory cell model and a murine model of sepsis-induced liver injury, respectively, aiming to explore the potential protective effect of protein interacting with C α kinase 1 (PICK1) on sepsis-induced ALI and its underlying mechanisms. In both the cell supernatant and the murine whole blood, the concentrations of inflammatory factors were quantified by ELISA, while the protein and mRNA expressions of PICK1, cleaved-PARP-1, caspase1, TLR4, IκBα, and NF-κB were assessed via western blot and qRT-PCR.

Signal amplification techniques are highly desirable for the analysis of low-level targets that are closely related with diseases and the monitoring of important biological processes. However, it is still challenging to achieve this goal in a facile and economical way. Herein, we developed a novel dual signal amplification strategy by combining urease catalysis with the release of Ag from silver nanoparticles (AgNPs).
