Background: Large-scale coral bleaching events have become increasingly frequent in recent years. This process occurs when corals are exposed to high temperatures and intense light stress, leading to an overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by their endosymbiotic dinoflagellates. The ROS buildup prompts corals to expel these symbiotic microalgae, resulting in the corals' discoloration.

Noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) can be differentiated from invasive encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (eFV-PTC) by the presence of a tumor capsule or blood vessel invasion in histological examination. The objective of this study was to investigate whether it is possible to distinguish between NIFTP and invasive eFV-PTC before surgery. Patients diagnosed with NIFTP and invasive eFV-PTC from 2017 to 2023 were analyzed for biochemical, ultrasonographic, and cytological features.

Introduction: Bone turnover markers reflected the bone remodeling process and bone health in clinical studies. Studies on variation of bone remodeling markers in different stage CKD were scant, and this study investigated the role of bedside intradialytic cycling in altering concentrations of bone-remodeling markers in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Materials And Methods: Participants were segmented into four groups: a group with eGFR >60 ml/min/1.

Absolute line strength measurements of hydroperoxyl (HO2) radical in the OO-stretching (ν3) fundamental band have been performed by means of mid-infrared time-resolved dual-comb spectroscopy. By employing two sets of dual-comb spectrometers, high-resolution time-resolved spectra of HO2 and HCl, formed in the photolysis reaction system of Cl2/CH3OH/O2, could be, respectively, measured near 1123 and 3059 cm-1. With kinetic simulations, spectral analysis of both HO2 and HCl, as well as the accurate line strength of the HCl R(9) transition at 3059.

Age did not affect the rate of subsequent hysterectomy following hysteroscopic surgery: A population-based retrospective cohort study from 2000 to 2020.

Int J Gynaecol Obstet

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, Tzu Chi University, Hualien, Taiwan.

Objective: Previous studies found younger age was associated with an increased risk of hysterectomy after hysteroscopic surgeries (HS) due to abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of age on the incidence of hysterectomy after HS for treating AUB in Taiwan.

Methods: This was a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study which utilized the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database.

Carbazole-derived self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are promising materials for hole-extraction layer (HEL) in conventional organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Here, a SAM Cbz-2Ph derived from 3,6-diphenylcarbazole is demonstrated. The large molecular dipole moment of Cbz-2Ph allows the modulation of electrode work function to facilitate hole extraction and maximize photovoltage, thus improving the OPV performance.

Constipation is correlated with diminished cognitive function, revealing a possible rectum-brain connection. In this counter-balanced crossover trial, 13 elite triathletes underwent a Stroop test to assess cognitive function and executive control. The Stroop test was conducted both with and without magnesium oxide intake, with a 1-week washout period between sessions.

Bevacizumab is widely used in various clinical indications, but investigations into its optimal dosage for treating CNS metastases remain limited. The BEEP regimen, comprising bevacizumab, etoposide, and cisplatin, has recently demonstrated promising clinical outcomes for patients with breast cancer brain metastasis (BCBM) or leptomeningeal metastasis (LM). This study aimed to evaluate the exposure-response relationship of bevacizumab in BCBM patients and to explore the improved CNS penetration of chemotherapy by bevacizumab with LM patients.

Associations between fear of COVID-19 and mental health in Ghana: A sequential mediation model.

Heliyon

January 2025

Institute of Allied Health Sciences, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University, 1, University Rd., Tainan, 701401, Taiwan.

Introduction: Although the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has ceased globally, individuals may still suffer from various psychological burdens in the post-COVID-19 era. The present observational cross-sectional study investigated how fear of COVID-19 can affect mental health through mediators including stress, perceived stigma, and preventive behaviors among young adults in Ghana.

Methods: A total of 635 participants aged between 18 and 29 years (mean age = 20.

Enhancing safety with an AI-empowered assessment and monitoring system for BSL-3 facilities.

Heliyon

January 2025

Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Nanomedicine, National Health Research Institutes, 35, Keyan Road, Zhunan Town, Miaoli County, 350, Taiwan.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has created an urgent demand for research, which has spurred the development of enhanced biosafety protocols in biosafety level (BSL)-3 laboratories to safeguard against the risks associated with handling highly contagious pathogens. Laboratory management failures can pose significant hazards.

Methods: An external system captured images of personnel entering a laboratory, which were then analyzed by an AI-based system to verify their compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) regulations, thereby introducing an additional layer of protection.

Optimal design of variables switch-based sampling scheme for verifying Weibull distributed product lifetimes.

J Appl Stat

May 2024

Department of Aviation Management, Republic of China Air Force Academy, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Ensuring products maintain their normal function during the warranty period is essential for companies to control warranty costs and sustain their brand reputation. A variables acceptance sampling (VAS) plan based on the lifetime performance index (LPI) is a practical technology for verifying product lifetimes because it can provide the number of failures required for life testing and the acceptance criterion for lot disposition. Recently, an LPI-based variables quick-switch sampling (VQSS) system has been developed to improve the sampling efficiency.

Background: miRNAs (microRNAs) are endogenous RNAs with lengths of 18 to 24 nucleotides and play critical roles in gene regulation and disease progression. Although traditional wet-lab experiments provide direct evidence for miRNA-disease associations, they are often time-consuming and complicated to analyze by current bioinformatics tools. In recent years, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques are powerful tools to analyze large-scale biological data.

The lipoxygenase (LOX) gene family is widely distributed in plants, and its activity is closely associated with seed viability and stress tolerance. In this study, we cloned the rice(Oryza sativa)lipoxygenase gene OsLOX1, a key participant in the 13-lipoxygenase metabolic pathway. Our primary focus was to investigate its role in mediating responses to drought stress and seed germination in rice.
