Recent progress in the structure of glycogen serving as a durable energy reserve in bacteria.

World J Microbiol Biotechnol

January 2020

Department of Bioinformatics, School of Medical Informatics and Engineering, Xuzhou Medical University, Xuzhou, 221000, Jiangsu, China.

Glycogen is conventionally considered as a transient energy reserve that can be rapidly synthesized for glucose accumulation and mobilized for ATP production. However, this conception is not completely applicable to prokaryotes due to glycogen structural heterogeneity. A number of studies noticed that glycogen with small average chain length g in bacteria has the potential to degrade slowly, which might prolong bacterial environment survival.

Increasing evidence has suggested that microRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in the initiation and development of cancers. Here, we found that miR-140-5p was significantly downregulated in both laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) tissues and cell lines. Decreased expression of miR-140-5p was significantly associated with the metastasis of LSCC.

A subset of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), reported as immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) thyroiditis, is characterized by IgG4+ plasma cell-rich inflammation and marked sclerotic changes, which suggests a close relationship with immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). However, to date, there is no consensus regarding the cutoff values used to define a significant IgG4+ plasma cell count in thyroid inflammation. We, therefore, sought to validate both the cutoff value of the comprehensive diagnostic criteria (CVC) and the cutoff value of thyroid-specific diagnostic criteria (CVT) for diagnosing IgG4 thyroiditis.

The protein kinase complex CBL10-CIPK8-SOS1 functions in Arabidopsis to regulate salt tolerance.

J Exp Bot

March 2020

Hainan Key Laboratory for Sustainable Utilization of Tropical Bioresources/Hainan Key Laboratory for Biotechnology of Salt Tolerant Crops/Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry, Hainan University, Haikou, China.

Salt tolerance in plants is mediated by Na+ extrusion from the cytosol by the plasma membrane Na+/H+ antiporter SOS1. This is activated in Arabidopsis root by the protein kinase complex SOS2-SOS3 and in Arabidopsis shoot by the protein kinase complex CBL10-SOS2, with SOS2 as a key node in the two pathways. The sos1 mutant is more sensitive than the sos2 mutant, suggesting that other partners may positively regulate SOS1 activity.

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common malignant tumor in the world. Currently, chemotherapy is still the major method for non-small cell lung cancer treatment, but the problem of cancer drug resistance still exists, so we designed 5 different phosphorothioate oligonucleotides to silence key genes in tumor cell development, which could help avoid inducing cancer cell drug resistance. MicroRNAs have been shown to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis and progression of many malignancies, such as breast, colon, lung, and pancreatic cancer.

Optimal oxidative stress (OS) is important throughout pregnancy; however, an increased OS may alter placental angiogenesis culminating in an imbalanced of angiogenic growth mediators (AGMs). Suboptimal Health Status (SHS), a physical state between health and disease, may be associated with increased OS and unbalanced AGMs. In this study, we explored the association between SHS, biomarkers of OS (BOS) and AGMs among normotensive pregnant women (NTN-PW) in a Ghanaian Suboptimal Health Cohort Study (GHOACS).

Multifunctional SnO/TiO/RGO nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial activity have been successfully synthesized by a facile one-pot environmentally friendly green hydrothermal route using titanium tetrabutoxide (TBOT), NaSnO and graphene oxide (GO) without reducing agents and any structure-directing agents. The results demonstrate that the reaction pH conditions play important roles in the control of the crystallographic phases of TiO and SnO. In addition, the visible-light-active photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of the synthesized composites were measured for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and the growth inhibition of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E.
