This study explores the role of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene and Lon protease in the development of clear cell renal carcinoma (ccRCC) through mechanisms involving inflammation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in kidney cells. By examining the impact of VHL on the early stages of kidney cancer development, this research highlights the contributions of inflammation and ROS, as well as the involvement of Lon protease. The findings reveal increased Lon expression and ROS levels in VHL-knockdown HK-2 cells, along with elevated phospho-c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) levels, emphasizing the complex interplay between VHL, Lon protease, inflammation, and ROS in kidney cell models.

The prognostic value of central pathology review in upper urinary tract cancer (UTUC) remains inadequately addressed in existing literature. In this study, we conducted an extensive central pathology review and presented its influence on multi-center UTUC studies. We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent radical nephroureterectomy or segmental resection for UTUC to determine eligibility for central pathology review.

Background: Ultrasonography is used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) according to various criteria. This diagnostic meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography for diagnosing CTS, focusing on the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve (MN) at the inlet of the carpal tunnel and regional variations in diagnostic thresholds between Asian and non-Asian populations.
Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability among stroke survivors. Despite the availability of numerous stroke rehabilitative therapies, such as mirror therapy, bilateral arm training, and robot-assisted therapy, the recovery of motor function after stroke remains incomplete. Bilateral arm function is a key component in stroke patients to perform activities of daily living and to reflect their functional autonomy.

Biofoulants can adhere to multiple surfaces, degrading the performance of medical devices and industrial facilities and/or causing nosocomial infection. The surface immobilization of zwitterionic materials can prevent the initial attachment of the foulants but lacks extensive implementation. Herein, we propose a facile, universal, two-step surface modification strategy to improve fouling resistance.

Background: Endoscopic management of upper tract urothelial cancer (UTUC) is an important treatment option for low risk UTUC. Although Taiwan is an endemic area for UTUC, endoscopic treatment outcomes in Taiwan are frequently under- reported.
Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed the treatment outcomes of endoscopic management for clinically localized UTUC.

Objectives: The correlation of the changes of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with long-term cardiovascular complications in patients with primary aldosteronism (PA) following mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRA) treatment remains ambiguous. This prospective study aims to determine factors associated with all-cause mortality and de novo cardiovascular events of PA patients against the eGFR-dip.
Methods: A total of 208 newly diagnosed PA patients were enrolled from January 2017 to January 2019.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the oncological outcome of delayed surgical wait time from the diagnosis of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) to radical nephroureterectomy (RNU).
Methods: In this multicenter retrospective study, medical records were collected between 1988 and 2021 from 18 participating Taiwanese hospitals under the Taiwan UTUC Collaboration Group. Patients were dichotomized into the early (≤90 days) and late (>90 days) surgical wait-time groups.

Diagnostic ultrasound is widely used for evaluating carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), an entrapment neuropathy of the median nerve (MN). Decreased mobility of the MN inside the carpal tunnel has been reported in CTS, and various methods have been used to evaluate MN mobility; however, there is still no conclusive understanding of its connection with CTS. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current published literature on ultrasonographic evaluations of transverse and longitudinal MN displacement and to identify the relationship between MN mobility and CTS.

Background: Somatic mutations for excess aldosterone production have been frequently identified as important roles in the pathogenesis of unilateral primary hyperaldosteronism (uPA). Although mutation represents a minor etiology in primary aldosteronism, it plays a significant role in causing uPAs in sporadic cases.
Objective: To identify novel somatic mutation in patients with uPA and investigate the pathophysiological, immunohistological, and clinical characteristics of the variant.

Background: The advantage of adjuvant chemotherapy for upper urinary tract urothelial cancer (UTUC) has been reported, whereas its impact on upper tract cancer with variant histology remains unclear. We aimed to answer the abovementioned question with our real-world data.
Design Setting And Participants: Patients who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) and were confirmed to have variant UTUC were retrospectively evaluated for eligibility of analysis.

Background: Reduced gliding ability of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel has been observed in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gliding abilities of the median nerve and flexor tendon in patients with CTS and healthy participants in the neutral and 30° extended positions of the wrist and to compare the gliding between the finger flexion and extension phases.
Methods: Patients with CTS and healthy participants were consecutively recruited in a community hospital.

Background And Aims: Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index is a HCC predictor in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. However, little is known about whether FIB-4 helps identify non-cirrhotic CHB patients with minimal HCC risk after prolonged nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) therapy.
Methods: A total of 1936 ethnically diverse, non-cirrhotic CHB patients were enrolled in this retrospective multi-national study.

The level of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is elevated in chronic kidney disease patients undergoing dialysis. However, statins are unable to reduce the cardiovascular events in chronic dialysis patients. In this study, we investigated the effects of DEHP on statin-conferred pleiotropic effects and the underlying molecular mechanism in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and endothelial cells (ECs).

Patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD) often have significant exercise intolerance and poorer health-related quality of life (HRQL). The goals of treatment for NTM-LD should include reducing the severity of symptoms, improving HRQL, and reducing acute exacerbations. Nonpharmacological treatment, including pulmonary rehabilitation program and optimal nutritional strategy, should be one part of treatment for NTM-LD.

In patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC), the effects of baseline characteristics, virological profiles, and therapeutic outcome to pegylated interferon plus ribavirin (PR) therapy on autoimmune diseases are unknown. Taiwanese Chronic Hepatitis C Cohort is a nationwide hepatitis C virus registry cohort comprising 23 hospitals of Taiwan. A total of 12,770 CHC patients receiving PR therapy for at least 4 weeks between January 2003 and December 2015 were enrolled and their data were linked to the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for studying the development of 10 autoimmune diseases.
