Improvement in outcomes of children with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is attributed to several refinements in clinical management. We evaluated treatment outcomes of Taiwanese pediatric AML patients in the past 20 years. Overall, 860 de novo AML patients aged 0-18 years and registered in the Childhood Cancer Foundation of R.

Background: Although most current medication error prevention systems are rule-based, these systems may result in alert fatigue because of poor accuracy. Previously, we had developed a machine learning (ML) model based on Taiwan's local databases (TLD) to address this issue. However, the international transferability of this model is unclear.

To examine the effect of de-escalation of P2Y12 inhibitor in dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and bleeding complications after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Taiwanese patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients who had received PCI during hospitalization for AMI (between 2013 and 2016) and were initially treated with aspirin and ticagrelor and without adverse events after 3 months of treatment were retrospectively evaluated. In total, 1,901 and 8,199 patients were identified as "de-escalated DAPT" (switched to aspirin and clopidogrel) and "unchanged DAPT" (continued on aspirin and ticagrelor) cohorts, respectively.

Dielectric Thermal Smart Glass Based on Tunable Helical Polymer-Based Superstructure for Biosensor with Antibacterial Property.

Polymers (Basel)

January 2021

Graduate Institute of Biomedical Optomechatronics, College of Biomedical Engineering, Taipei Medical University, Taipei 11031, Taiwan.

A dielectric thermal smart glass (DTSG) based on the dielectric heating optical (DHO) effect in tunable helical polymer-based superstructures-cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs)-was exhibited in this study. Field-induced dielectric heating can strongly affect the orientation of liquid crystals and change its optical properties. The purpose of this research focuses on dual-frequency CLC materials characterized by their specific properties on dielectric relaxation and demonstrates their potential for antibacterial biosensor applications.

Introduction: Stroke can lead to life-long disability and constitutes a huge financial burden on the family and society. Stroke survivors with cognitive impairment often experience considerable challenges in the process of recovery and returning to society. Interventions that effectively help individuals resume essential daily activities and return to active participation in their communities are lacking.

Background: Risk score is widely used in non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients to predict the in-hospital outcome for immediate coronary angiography decision and care of unit selection.

Objectives: This study compared the performances of the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI), Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE), Primary Angioplasty in Myocardial Infarction (PAMI), and Revised Controlled Abciximab and Device Investigation to Lower Late Angioplasty Complications (Revised CADILLAC) risk scores in predicting in-hospital and long-term outcomes in diabetic NSTEMI patients.

Methods: A total of 750 diabetic NSTEMI patients from 27 hospitals were enrolled between January 2013 and December 2015 in the nationwide registry initiated by the Taiwan Society of Cardiology.

The numerous bioactive properties of wild bitter melon (WBM) leaf extract and their medicinal applications have been recognized for many years. In this study, we examined the suppressive effect of a methanolic extract (ME) of WBM leaf and fractionated components thereof on live -induced in vitro and in vivo inflammation.

Background: Due to widespread use of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening, increasing number of patients are found to have subsolid nodules (SSNs). The management of SSNs is a clinical challenge and primarily depends on CT imaging. We seek to identify risk factors that may help clinicians determine an optimal course of management.

How Can Artificial Intelligence Make Medicine More Preemptive?

J Med Internet Res

August 2020

International Center for Health Information Technology, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan.

In this paper we propose the idea that Artificial intelligence (AI) is ushering in a new era of "Earlier Medicine," which is a predictive approach for disease prevention based on AI modeling and big data. The flourishing health care technological landscape is showing great potential-from diagnosis and prescription automation to the early detection of disease through efficient and cost-effective patient data screening tools that benefit from the predictive capabilities of AI. Monitoring the trajectories of both in- and outpatients has proven to be a task AI can perform to a reliable degree.

Graduate Institute of Biomedical Informatics, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Dermatology, Taipei Municipal Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Introduction: Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer, and it may arise from a cutaneous pigmented lesion. As artificial intelligence (AI)-based teledermatology services hold promise in redefining the melanoma screening paradigm, a study that evaluates user satisfaction with a smartphone-compatible, AI-based cutaneous pigmented lesion evaluator is lacking.

Methods: Data was collected between April and May 2019 in Taiwan.

Purpose: A recent increase in screen time during early childhood has adversely affected the sleep and psychosocial health of children; however, limited information is available regarding effective interventions to reduce the screen time among them. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a parental educational program on screen use, sleep quality, and psychosocial adaptation among preschoolers.

Design And Methods: A clustered randomized controlled study with a parallel-group design was conducted.

Introduction: Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are potential cell sources for cartilage tissue engineering. Chitosan has been shown to enhance the stemness and differentiation capability of ASCs, and the native extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from articular cartilage has been also reported to induce chondrogenic differentiation of ASCs. Here we tested the hypothesis that a porous three-dimensional (3D) hybrid scaffold composed of chitosan and cartilage ECM can provide a better environment to induce ASC chondrogenesis.

Although previous clinical trials demonstrated that ticagrelor could reduce cardiovascular events and mortality versus clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), the real-world evidence of its clinical impacts on East Asian Diabetic population has rarely been investigated.Between November 2013 and June 2015, 1534 patients were recruited into the Acute Coronary Syndrome-Diabetes Mellitus Registry of the Taiwan Society of Cardiology (TSOC ACS-DM registry). After propensity score matching, a total of 730 patients undergoing successful revascularization and discharged on ticagrelor (N = 365) or clopidogrel (N = 365) were analyzed.

A Silk Fibroin Based Hydration Accelerator for Root Canal Filling Materials.

Polymers (Basel)

April 2020

International Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Engineering, College of Biomedical Engineering, Taipei Medical University, Taipei 110-31, Taiwan.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is widely used in various dental endodontic applications such as root-end filling, furcal perforation repair, and vital pulp therapy. In spite of many attempts to improve handling properties and reduce the discoloration of MTA, the ideal root canal filling material has yet to be fully developed. The objective of this study was to investigate the setting time, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of MTA set by a silk fibroin solution.

The objective of this study is to investigate the synergistic effects of acid etching and metal-ion chelation in dental smear layer removal using wasted derived chitosans. The wasted fruiting body was used to prepare both acid-soluble fungal chitosan (FCS) and alkali-soluble polysaccharide (ASP). To explore the effective irrigant concentration for smear layer removal, a chelating effect on ferrous ions was conducted.
