Elevated serum corin concentrations in patients with cardiac diseases have been associated with adverse cardiovascular events and progressive renal dysfunction. This study aimed to determine the role of serum corin levels in predicting the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) and mortality in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). We screened 323 patients admitted to the ICU in our institution from May 2018 through December 2019.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been associated with the development and progression of renal disease. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), a key transcription factor involved in inflammation as well as lipid and glucose metabolism, helps maintain the integrity of tubular epithelial cells.

Aim Of The Study: Our hypothesis is that nirmatrelvir can penetrate the blood‒brain barrier and reach effective concentrations in the brain. Furthermore, herbal formulations can help maintain nirmatrelvir levels in the body, suggesting potential interactions between these medications.

Materials And Methods: To investigate this hypothesis, an animal model combining multisite microdialysis, ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) methods was developed to monitor nirmatrelvir levels in the blood and brain of rats.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines factors influencing the causes and timing of deaths in COVID-19 patients at Taipei City Hospital between January and July 2022, identifying predictors using statistical analysis methods.
  • - Among the 195 hospitalized patients who died, a significant majority had COVID-19-specific deaths, with older patients (≥65 years) showing a heightened risk for various death types and timings, while fully vaccinated patients had a reduced risk of COVID-related deaths.
  • - The researchers conclude that enhancing COVID-19 vaccination efforts and closely monitoring patients with existing health conditions can help lower the rates of both COVID-19-specific and non-COVID-19-related deaths.

Implication of locus coeruleus dysfunction in Prader-Willi syndrome: Insights from a mouse model.

November 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, New Taipei City 23142, Taiwan; School of Medicine, Tzu Chi University, Hualien 97071, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a multisystemic disorder. Notably, many characteristic symptoms of PWS are correlated with locus coeruleus norepinephrine system (LC-NE) dysfunction, including impairment in arousal, learning, pain modulation, and stress-induced negative affective states. Although electrophysiological experiments in necdin-deficient mice, an established PWS animal model, have revealed decreased spontaneous neuronal firing activity in the LC and impaired excitability, the behavioral phenotypes related to LC-NE dysfunction remain unexplored.

Aim: To examine the dynamic change in hepatic steatosis status during repeated assessments over time, and its potential impact on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Methods: We assessed trajectories of hepatic steatosis and other metabolic disorders in 3134 middle-aged adults undergoing longitudinal assessment of ultrasonography during a pre-baseline period (1993-2009) in a population-based cohort study of liver health. Subsequently, we determined the association of hepatic steatosis trajectories with the incidence of CVD among 2185 CVD-free individuals, followed until 2021.

Older adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) or early cognitive decline during the subjective cognitive decline (SCD) stage may exhibit neuropsychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and subtle cognitive impairment. The clinicopathological features and biological mechanisms of MDD differ from those of SCD among older adults; these conditions thus require different treatment strategies. This study enrolled 82 participants above 50 years old with normal cognitive levels from the communities to examine biomarker-behavior correlations between MDD (n = 23) and SCD (n = 23) relative to a normal control (NC) group (n = 36).

Ketamine-dependent patients with persistent psychosis have higher neurofilament light chain levels than patients with schizophrenia.

Asian J Psychiatr

October 2024

Experimental and Clinical Pharmacopsychology, Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatics, Psychiatric Hospital of the University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • Ketamine can cause serious mental problems, like psychosis, in people who use it a lot, similar to schizophrenia but usually not as bad.
  • In a study, researchers looked at the levels of a substance called neurofilament light chain (NFL) in people with ketamine dependence and compared them to those with schizophrenia and healthy people.
  • They found that people with the most severe ketamine-related psychosis had higher NFL levels, suggesting that ketamine affects the brain differently than schizophrenia does.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic, fluctuating inflammatory condition that primarily affects the gastrointestinal tract. Although the incidence of CD in Taiwan is lower than that in Western countries, the severity of CD presentation appears to be similar between Asia and the West. This observation indicates the urgency for devising revised guidelines tailored to the unique reimbursement system, and patient requirements in Taiwan.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and is characterized by alternating periods of inflammation and remission. Although UC incidence is lower in Taiwan than in Western countries, its impact remains considerable, demanding updated guidelines for addressing local healthcare challenges and patient needs. The revised guidelines employ international standards and recent research, emphasizing practical implementation within the Taiwanese healthcare system.

December 2024

Institute of Neuroscience, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei, Taiwan; Institute of Philosophy of Mind and Cognition, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores how aging affects inhibitory control, revealing that older adults show significant declines in large-scale inhibition, evidenced by slower responses in the Stop Signal Task, while focal-scale inhibition remains largely unaffected as indicated by the Gabor task results.
  • - Neuroimaging results, including magnetic resonance spectroscopy, revealed decreased levels of key brain chemicals (GABA, glutamate, glutamine, and NAA) in the pre-SMA region, correlating with poor large-scale inhibition in older adults.
  • - The findings suggest that aging impacts different types of inhibition differently, emphasizing the need for focused cognitive interventions to address the decline in large-scale inhibitory functions while noting that some aspects of inhibition may be preserved.
