Antidepressant efficacy of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in antidepressant-nonresponding bipolar depression: a single-blind randomized sham-controlled trial.

Background: To examine the antidepressant efficacy and response predictors of R-DLPFC-LF rTMS for antidepressant-nonresponding BD.

Methods: We conducted a single-blind randomized sham-controlled trial for 54 (28 sham, 26 active) patients with antidepressant-nonresponding BD (baseline MADRS ≥ 20). Patients received 15 daily sessions of active or sham neuronavigated rTMS (Figure-of-8 coil, five 1 Hz 60 s 110% RMT trains).

Perceived helpfulness of treatment for alcohol use disorders: Findings from the World Mental Health Surveys.

Aim: We examined prevalence and factors associated with receiving perceived helpful alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment, and persistence in help-seeking after earlier unhelpful treatment.

Methods: Data came from 27 community epidemiologic surveys of adults in 24 countries using the World Health Organization World Mental Health surveys (n = 93,843). Participants with a lifetime history of treated AUD were asked if they ever received helpful AUD treatment, and how many professionals they had talked to up to and including the first time they received helpful treatment (or how many ever, if they had not received helpful treatment).

Wilson Sims Fall Risk Assessment Tool Versus Morse Fall Scale in Psychogeriatric Inpatients: a Multicentre Study.

Objective: To compare predictive validity of the Wilson Sims Fall Risk Assessment Tool (WSFRAT) with that of the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) in psychogeriatric inpatients.

Methods: Psychogeriatric patients from Shatin Hospital, Tai Po Hospital, Castle Peak Hospital, and United Christian Hospital who had fall incident between April 2019 and April 2020 were identified. Their fall risks were assessed by the WSFRAT and the MFS, and their falls incidents during hospitalisation were recorded.

Certain dietary patterns are associated with GLIM criteria among Chinese community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional analysis.

Disease-related malnutrition is prevalent among older adults; therefore, identifying the modifiable risk factors in the diet is essential for the prevention and management of disease-related malnutrition. The present study examined the cross-sectional association between dietary patterns and malnutrition in Chinese community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years in Hong Kong. Dietary patterns, including Diet Quality Index International (DQI-I), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), the Mediterranean Diet Score, 'vegetable-fruit' pattern, 'snack-drink-milk product' pattern and 'meat-fish' pattern, were estimated and generated from a validated food frequency questionnaire.

Do people with mental health problems have lower adherence to precautionary measures in COVID-19 pandemic? A cross-sectional observational study in Hong Kong.

Objectives: Mental health problems are prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic, but their effect on adherence to precautionary measures is not well understood. Given that psychological morbidities are associated with lower treatment adherence, and that precautionary measures are important in containing the spread of COVID-19, this study aims to determine if people with mental health problems have lower adherence to precautionary measures against COVID-19.

Design: We conducted a cross-sectional territory-wide online survey between 17 June and 31 July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Knowledge, Practice and Attitudes of Nurses Regarding Physical Restraint: Survey Results from Psychiatric Inpatient Settings.

There is a considerable amount of literature describing how nurses' knowledge contributes to their attitudes and practices related to patient physical restraint. However, whether or not there have been any improvements in nurses' knowledge levels, attitudes or practices regarding physical restraint during the past few years is unknown. A survey was conducted on nurses ( 133) in one psychiatric hospital in Hong Kong ( 98, response rate = 74%).

Does additional weekend and holiday physiotherapy benefit geriatric patients with hip fracture? - A case-historical control study.

Objective: To evaluate the new service model of additional weekend and holiday physiotherapy (PT) by comparing functional outcomes and hospital length of stay between a group of geriatric patients with hip fracture receiving daily PT training and a group of geriatric patients with hip fracture receiving weekdays PT training.

Methods: A retrospective case-historical control chart review was conducted and a total of 355 patients were identified. Between-group comparisons were done on functional outcomes including Modified Functional Ambulation Classification (MFAC), Elderly Mobility Scale (EMS), Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and process outcome in terms of length of stay (LOS) in hospitals.

Background: Functional connectivity between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and subgenual cingulate (sgACC) may serve as a biomarker for transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment response. The first aim was to establish whether this finding is veridical or artifactually induced by the pre-processing method. Furthermore, alternative biomarkers were identified and the clinical utility for personalized medicine was examined.

Sex differences in symptom severity, cognition and psychosocial functioning among individuals with at-risk mental state for psychosis.

Aim: Sex differences are well documented in schizophrenia, but have been much less studied in at-risk mental state (ARMS) for psychosis. We aimed to examine sex differences in symptomatology, cognition, social and role functioning in individuals with ARMS, with specific focus on clarifying relationships between sex, negative symptoms and functioning.

Methods: One hundred and seventy-seven Chinese participants aged 15-40 years with ARMS were recruited from a specialized early intervention service in Hong Kong.

White matter integrity in young medication-naïve bipolar II depressed adults.

It is unknown if young medication-naïve bipolar II (BPII) depressed patients have increased white matter (WM) disruptions. 27 each of young (average 23 years) and treatment-naïve BPII depressed, unipolar depressed (UD) patients and age-sex-education matched healthy controls (HC) underwent 3 T MRIs with diffusion tensor imaging. Diagnostic ratings included Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders (SCID), Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A).

Dynamic changes of region-specific cortical features and scalp-to-cortex distance: implications for transcranial current stimulation modeling.

Background: Transcranial current stimulation in rehabilitation is a fast-growing field featured with computational and biophysical modeling. Cortical features and scalp-to-cortex distance (SCD) are key variables for determining the strength and distribution of the electric field, yet longitudinal studies able to capture these dynamic changes are missing. We sought to investigate and quantify the ageing effect on the morphometry and SCD of left primary motor cortex (M1) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in normal ageing adults and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) converters.

Introduction: The search for biomarkers of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease is driven by the potential clinical applications in disease prognostication. Various eye tracking studies on cognitive functions in Parkinson's disease suggest a promising role of eye movement parameters as a biomarker for cognitive decline but the clinical utility has not been validated in longitudinal studies. The present study aims to investigate the longitudinal progression of eye fixation duration in a visual search task and its correlation with domain-specific cognitive impairment.

Higher psychogeriatric admissions in COVID-19 than in severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Objectives: To examine whether psychogeriatric admissions increased after COVID-19, independent of seasonal variation; whether the increase was comparable with that seen in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS); and which factors were associated with such increase.

Methods: All psychiatric admissions aged 65 or older in the 3 months before and after COVID-19 (from November 2019 to April 2020), in the previous 2 years (from November 2017 to April 2018 and from November 2018 to April 2019), and in the year of SARS (from November 2002 to April 2003) in a major gazette inpatient psychiatric unit in Hong Kong, which serves a catchment population of 1.4 million, were anonymously reviewed.

Prevention and management of aggressive behaviour in patients at psychiatric hospitals: a document analysis of clinical practice guidelines in Hong Kong.

The use of restraint and seclusion remains a last resort but not an uncommon practice in clinical psychiatry in the management of aggressive events. Barriers to advance care planning: a qualitative study of seriously ill Chinese patients and their families.

Background: Advance care planning (ACP) facilitates identification and documentation of patients' treatment preferences.
