pH-sensitive micelles are desirable for co-drug delivery in cancer chemotherapy. Herein, a novel, very pH-sensitive and biodegradable citric acid grafted poly maleate--poly lactic--glycolic acid was synthesized and assembled as micelles ultrasonication. The engineered homogeneous nanomicelles were used for the first time for doxorubicin and conferone combination chemotherapy in the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line.

N1-Methylnicotinamide: An Anti-Ovarian Aging Hormetin?

Ageing Res Rev

September 2020

Stem Cell Research Center, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran; Department of Reproductive Biology, Faculty of Advanced Medical Sciences, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences Tabriz, Iran. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Ovarian aging is associated with decreased oocyte quality and quantity, regulated by mitochondrial signals and the impact of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).
  • The role of ROS has shifted from being viewed solely as harmful to a factor that can enhance cellular longevity through low-level stress responses, particularly via activation of AMPK.
  • N1-Methylnicotinamide (MNAM) shows promise in promoting ovarian health by producing ROS through the action of the detoxifying enzyme AOX1, particularly noted in patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which suggests its potential to activate AMPK and combat ovarian aging.

Nicotinamide and its metabolite N1-Methylnicotinamide alleviate endocrine and metabolic abnormalities in adipose and ovarian tissues in rat model of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Chem Biol Interact

June 2020

Stem Cell Research Center, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran; Department of Reproductive Biology, Faculty of Advanced Medical Sciences, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences Tabriz, Iran. Electronic address:

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), as a common endocrine disorder is accompanied by hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, ovulation problems, and infertility. Various types of off-label drugs like metformin have been used for the management of targeted problems caused by PCOS such as insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism. Nicotinamide (NAM) acts as a substrate of visfatin and Nicotinamide N-Methyltransferase (NNMT) leading to the generation of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) and N1-Methylnicotinamide (MNAM), respectively.

Exosomes, as lipid nanostructure, are secreted by approximately all cell types within the body and actively involved in either short or long distances cell-cell communication in an autocrine and paracrine manner. Recently, exosomes are widely used as a nanocarrier for delivery of various nucleotide- or protein passed molecules including miRNA, and drugs into various cells, as a therapeutic strategy in a broad range of diseases including osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common debilitating chronic musculoskeletal disorders with a multifaceted condition and an increasing impact on the quality of life.
