Introduction: The proportion of very elderly patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) is expected to rise. Furthermore, patients are likely more prone to suffer a cardiac arrest (CA) event within the ICU. The occurrence of intensive care unit cardiac arrest (ICU-CA) is associated with high mortality.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease causing limited mobility and pain, with no curative treatment available. Recent in vivo studies suggested autonomic alterations during OA progression in patients, yet clinical evidence is scarce. Therefore, autonomic tone was analyzed in OA patients via heart rate variability (HRV) measurements.

Background: The increasing admissions of very elderly patients to intensive care units (ICUs) over recent decades highlight a growing need for understanding acute kidney injury (AKI) in this population. Although these individuals are potentially at high risk for AKI and adverse outcomes, data on AKI in this population is scarce. This study investigates the AKI incidence and outcomes of critically-ill patients aging at least 90 years.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the gold standard procedure for patients with end-stage osteoarthritis after failed conservative therapy. Digital templating is commonly employed in preoperative preparation for THA and contributes positively to its outcome. However, the impact of coxa valga and antetorta (CVA) configurations on stem size prediction accuracy remains not reported.

Collaborative manual image analysis by multiple experts in different locations is an essential workflow in biomedical science. However, sharing the images and writing down results by hand or merging results from separate spreadsheets can be error-prone. Moreover, blinding and anonymization are essential to address subjectivity and bias.

Objectives: The global population is aging, and the proportion of very elderly patients 90 years old or older in the ICU is expected to increase. The changes in the comorbidities and outcomes of very elderly patients hospitalized in the ICU that have occurred over time are unknown.
Design: Retrospective observational cohort study.

The red cell distribution width (RDW) measures the heterogeneity of the erythrocyte volume. Different clinical conditions are associated with increased RDW, and high levels (>14.5%) have been described as a predictive marker for unfavorable outcomes and mortality in critically ill patients.

However, these 2 angles measure global lateralization and distalization but do not allow to differentiate how much lateralization or distalization are attributable to the glenoid and the humerus. We hypothesized that new angles could allow us to separately measure glenoid vs.

Purpose: Risk factors for the development of pain in the context of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) remain unclear. Radiological findings often do not correlate with clinical findings, so other pathomechanisms in the development and perception of pain must play a role. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation of increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity (measured by subjective and objective chronic stress parameters) with KOA severity, patellofemoral malalignment, and pain.

Background: It has been proposed that the expression of pain-related suffering may lead to an enhanced focus on oneself and reduced attention toward the external world. This study aimed at investigating whether experimentally induced painrelated suffering may lead persons to withdraw into themselves, causing a reduced focus on external stimuli as reflected by impaired performance in a facial recognition task and heightened perception of internal stimuli measured by interoceptive awareness.
Methods: Thirty-two participants had to recognize different emotional facial expressions (neutral, sad, angry, happy), or neutral geometrical figures under conditions of no pain, low, and high prolonged pain intensities.

Introduction: Hypoxic liver injury (HLI) is a frequent and life-threatening complication occurring in up to 10% of critically ill patients. Heart failure and age were previously identified as risk factors for occurrence of HLI. However, there is lack of data on incidence of HLI and its clinical implications on outcome in very old (≥90 years) patients.

Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of inpatients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) including lower extremity PAD, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and carotid artery disease in a large cohort of critically ill patients aged ≥ 90 years.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of all adult patients aged ≥ 90 years consecutively admitted to the intensive care unit at a tertiary care centre in Hamburg, Germany, between 1 January 2008 and 30 April 2019. Multivariable regression and Kaplan-Meier methods were used to determine the independent impact of PAD on short and long term mortality endpoints.

Many individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) show impairments in their pain-modulatory capacity. Although stress plays an important role in chronic pain, it is not known if stress-induced analgesia (SIA) is affected in patients with CMP. We investigated SIA in 22 patients with CMP and 18 pain-free participants.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), an emerging virus, has caused a global pandemic. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has led to high hospitalization rates worldwide. Little is known about the occurrence of in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) and high mortality rates have been proposed.

The successful use of allografts in reconstructive orthopedic surgery, including revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), has been outlined repeatedly. Nonetheless, as previous studies were primarily based on clinical follow-ups, we aimed to create an algorithm that accurately determines the extent of allograft incorporation in the acetabulum and femur using a suite of high-resolution imaging techniques. This study is based on a large patient database including > 4,500 patient data with previous revision THA and simultaneous use of allografts.

Background: Percutaneous dilatational tracheotomy (PDT) may lead to transient impairment of pulmonary function due to suboptimal ventilation, loss of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and repetitive suction maneuvers during the procedure. Possible changes in regional lung aeration were investigated using electrical impedance tomography (EIT), an increasingly implied instrument for bedside monitoring of pulmonary aeration.
Methods: With local ethics committee approval, after obtaining written informed consent 29 patients scheduled for elective PDT under bronchoscopic control were studied during mechanical ventilation in supine position.

Postoperative pain is a clinically relevant issue in orthopedic patients, affecting more than 40% 1 year after foot and ankle surgery. Because of the very complex anatomy with many different joints and several motion axes, clinical examination and conventional imaging are sometimes not sufficient to identify a local pain generator. Local uptake of bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals is known to correlate accurately with sites of pain generating foci and, thus, bone scintigraphy has been an established method to evaluate these respective patients for many years.

Background: The number of cardiac arrests (CA) in the group of very elderly patients (≥ 90 years) is expected to increase markedly due to the world`s rapidly ageing population. However, only little is known about long term outcome, CA- and intensive care unit (ICU) characteristics of patient's ≥ 90 years (nonagenarians) suffering from CA.
Methods: This single-center retrospective study included all adult patients ≥ 90 years after CA and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) which were treated at our ICU between January 1 2008 and September 15 2016.
