Genomic sequencing in diverse and underserved pediatric populations: parent perspectives on understanding, uncertainty, psychosocial impact, and personal utility of results.

Purpose: Limited evidence evaluates parents' perceptions of their child's clinical genomic sequencing (GS) results, particularly among individuals from medically underserved groups. Five Clinical Sequencing Evidence-Generating Research (CSER) consortium studies performed GS in children with suspected genetic conditions with high proportions of individuals from underserved groups to address this evidence gap.

Methods: Parents completed surveys of perceived understanding, personal utility, and test-related distress after GS result disclosure.

Maternal Incarceration and Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

Most studies on the impact of maternal incarceration on adolescent health risk behaviors have focused on singular, separated behaviors, even though these behaviors often cluster and co-occur. This study used the FFCWS dataset to examine the association between maternal incarceration and the aggregation of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Latent class analysis suggested the four-class model had the optimal model fit.

Non-screw glenoid augmentation constructs for shoulder instability with bone loss: A biomechanical assessment of static and elastic cerclage constructs.

Purpose: This study aims to compare the biomechanical performance of elastic and static suture-based cerclage systems to traditional screw constructs in the setting of modeled glenoid bony augmentation.

Methods: Biomechanical testing was conducted on polyurethane cellular foam blocks modeling a 20 % glenoid defect repaired with a coracoid graft. Constructs consisted of an elastic suture-based cerclage, static suture-based cerclage, and a two-screw construct.

Social determinants of financial stress and association with psychological distress among young adults 18-26 years in the United States.

Introduction: Financial stress (FS) during young adulthood may have lasting effects on financial security, physical health, and overall wellbeing. This study examines the burden, social determinants and mental health consequences of experienced FS among young adults in the United States, based on objective measures of financial stress.

Methods: We studied young adults aged 18-26 years using pooled data from the 2013-18 National Health Interview Survey.

Preoperative pulmonary function is associated with left ventricular assist device outcomes.

Introduction: Although left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is associated with improved survival in patients with end-stage heart failure, the impact of preoperative pulmonary function on short-term outcomes is unclear.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of all primary LVAD implants at a single institution. Common measures of preoperative pulmonary function were evaluated.

Introduction: Frozen section (FS) is often performed to confirm negative margins during pancreaticoduodenectomies (PD). This incurs significant cost, despite lack of evidence of survival benefit. Objective: To apply a normalized competitive index over a 20-year period to analyse applicant trends in orthopaedic surgery residency programs.

Design: A retrospective analysis of orthopaedic surgery residency program data from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match data from 2003 to 2022 and NRMP Charting Outcomes data from 2007 to 2021 was performed. A competitive index (CI) was utilized by dividing the number of programs ranked per applicant, multiplied by available positions, and by the match rate for each year.

Introduction: Based on US-FDA guidelines to create tools for development and evaluation of medical devices in non-clinical and clinical studies, the Validated Intraoperative Bleeding (VIBe) Scale was developed. The current investigation expands upon the earlier validation study with multi-specialty surgeons to further corroborate these findings and establish feasibility to implement VIBe SCALE into clinical practice and surveys degree of anticipated bleeding across common procedures in multiple surgical disciplines.

The challenges to detect, quantify, and characterize viral reservoirs in the current antiretroviral era.

A major barrier to cure HIV is the early generation of viral reservoirs in tissues. These viral reservoirs can contain intact or defective proviruses, but both generates low levels of viral proteins contribute to chronic bystander damage even in the ART era. Most viral reservoir detection techniques are limited to blood-based, reactivation, and sequencing assays that lack spatial properties to examine the contribution of the host's microenvironment to latency and cure efforts.

Optimized heparin adsorption using macroporous zeolites: A comprehensive study.

Depression is a common consequence of sexual victimization. Although religious coping has been previously studied within the context of sexual victimization, there is a dearth of research examining the potential reciprocal relationships between religious coping and depression among adults with a history of sexual victimization at the daily level. The current study addresses this important gap by leveraging an intensive longitudinal design and data analysis to explore bidirectional daily relations between religious coping and depression symptoms in a community sample of adults with a history of sexual victimization.

CrTiCT MXene as an adsorbent material in ultrasonic-assisted d-μ-solid phase extraction for trace detection of heavy metals.

MXenes are a large family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. While MXenes have great potential for applications in analytical chemistry, most of the studies in this field are focused on TiCT, the most popular MXene material. For example, several studies employed TiCT as an adsorbent for the trace detection of toxic analytes, but there is limited knowledge on the utility of other MXene materials for this application.

The effect of oral methadone on the QTc interval in cancer pain patients.

Introduction: The QTc prolongation effect of methadone has been extensively studied at higher doses commonly used in opioid dependence maintenance therapy, but evidence remains limited regarding its impact at the lower doses typically prescribed for cancer pain. This study aims to evaluate the effect of oral methadone on QTc intervals in cancer pain patients.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on adult patients initiated on oral methadone therapy for cancer.

Background: The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) has been rising at an alarming rate in the USA, and EOCRC disproportionately affects racial/ethnic minorities. Here, we construct comprehensive profiles of EOCRC DNA methylomes at base-pair resolution for a cohort of Hispanic and African American patients.

Results: We show the epigenetic landscape of these EOCRC patients differs from that of late-onset colorectal cancer patients, and methylation canyons in EOCRC tumor tissue preferentially overlapped genes in cancer-related pathways.

Use of alternative payment models for substance use disorder prevention in the United States: development of a conceptual framework.

Background: Alternative payment models (APMs) are methods through which insurers reimburse health care providers and are widely used to improve the quality and value of health care. While there is a growing movement to utilize APMs for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment services, they have rarely included SUD prevention strategies. Challenges to using APMs for SUD prevention include underdeveloped program outcome measures, inadequate SUD prevention funding, and lack of clarity regarding what prevention strategies might fit within the scope of APMs.
