An overview of the use of non-titanium MXenes for photothermal therapy and their combinatorial approaches for cancer treatment.

Since the initial publication on the first TiCT MXene in 2011, there has been a significant increase in the number of reports on applications of MXenes in various domains. MXenes have emerged as highly promising materials for various biomedical applications, including photothermal therapy (PTT), drug delivery, diagnostic imaging, and biosensing, owing to their fascinating conductivity, mechanical strength, biocompatibility and hydrophilicity. Through surface modification, MXenes can mitigate cytotoxicity, enhance biological stability, and improve histocompatibility, thereby enabling their potential use in biomedical applications.

Integrative co-registration of elemental imaging and histopathology for enhanced spatial multimodal analysis of tissue sections through TRACE.

Summary: Elemental imaging provides detailed profiling of metal bioaccumulation, offering more precision than bulk analysis by targeting specific tissue areas. However, accurately identifying comparable tissue regions from elemental maps is challenging, requiring the integration of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides for effective comparison. Facilitating the streamlined co-registration of whole slide images (WSI) and elemental maps, TRACE enhances the analysis of tissue regions and elemental abundance in various pathological conditions.

Use of Degludec in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes and Recurrent Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

This article describes a pediatric diabetes center quality improvement initiative to switch youth with type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) from insulin glargine to longer-duration insulin degludec to determine whether this change would reduce DKA recurrence. Overall, the change in DKA recurrence with degludec was not statistically significant. However, subgroup analysis showed that race/ethnicity and insurance status were significantly associated with change in DKA rates.

Comparison of Diabetes Education Content Experienced by Blind and Nonblind People With Diabetes.

This survey sought to examine disparities in diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) to illuminate gaps underlying morbidity and mortality disparities experienced by blind people with diabetes and develop a pathway for improved health care delivery and health outcomes. Blind participants were more likely to report getting DSMES on strategies to promote treatment adherence and noncompliance with medical regimen; yet, blind and nonblind participants did not differ on primary care provider visits or amount of time spent in diabetes education. These findings suggest that DSMES content may differ for blind versus nonblind participants.

Discovering novel prognostic biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma using eXplainable Artificial Intelligence.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains a global health challenge with high mortality rates, largely due to late diagnosis and suboptimal efficacy of current therapies. With the imperative need for more reliable, non-invasive diagnostic tools and novel therapeutic strategies, this study focuses on the discovery and application of novel genetic biomarkers for HCC using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Despite advances in HCC research, current biomarkers like Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) exhibit limitations in sensitivity and specificity, necessitating a shift towards more precise and reliable markers.

Social Leisure Activities and Cognitive Functioning among Married and Unmarried Older Men and Women in Mexico.

Using data from Wave 5 (2018) of the Mexican Health and Aging Study, this research examines the implications of six social leisure activities for cognition among married and unmarried men and women in Mexico, while considering their physical health and depressive symptoms. The findings reveal some marital status and gender differences and similarities. This study indicates that church attendance and volunteering might be related to poorer cognition, whereas a training course, club participation, board games, and remote communication can provide cognitive benefits.

Preservation of sexual function with Optilume-a novel treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Background: The Optilume benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) catheter system is a novel minimally invasive paclitaxel-coated dilation system that has demonstrated substantial and durable results in urinary flow and symptoms.

Aim: We now assess the impact of Optilume BPH procedure on sexual function.

Methods: Prior published results have described the methods of data collection during the PINNACLE study, which demonstrated durable improvement in urinary symptoms.

Background: Cryolipolysis is an established method for noninvasive focal subcutaneous fat reduction.

Objectives: To highlight the safety and real-world use of this technology.

Methods: Electronic medical records of all patients treated with a commercially available cryolipolysis technology (CoolSculpting and CoolSculpting Elite, Allergan Aesthetics, Irvine, CA) between 01/2016 and to 06/2023 at a multi-location group practice was retrospectively reviewed.

Physician Views and Attitudes Regarding Tobacco-Cessation Strategies for Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Objective: In this study, we explored physicians' level of experience with patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who used tobacco; their views on the effects of tobacco use on the efficacy of RA treatments; and their experiences and attitudes with respect to tobacco cessation programs.

Methods: We conducted qualitative, semi-structured interviews of 20 physicians (10 primary-care physicians [PCPs] and 10 rheumatologists).

Putting an Ethics Training Program Online: It May Be More Complicated Than We Think.

This project evaluated the online implementation of a Responsible Conduct of Research/Professional Ethics Training for graduate students. The program was offered as a video-streamed remote, real-time training with an in-person option. Effectiveness of the remote program was evaluated using multiple measures: perceptions of ethical dilemmas, ethical decision-making, and reactions to the training.

Introduction: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is related to disproportionate unemployment and productivity burden in the USA. The current study describes real-world mental health (MH)-related disability days and costs of patients with TRD initiated on esketamine nasal spray or conventional therapies in the USA.

Methods: Adults with TRD were selected from Merative™ MarketScan Commercial database (from January 2016 to January 2023) and classified into four cohorts (esketamine, ECT [electroconvulsive therapy], TMS [transcranial magnetic stimulation], and SGA [second-generation antipsychotics] augmentation) based on therapy initiated (index date) on/after 5 March 2019 (esketamine approval date for TRD).

Background: Persisting post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) is a condition characterized by prolonged recovery from a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and compromised quality of life. Previous literature, on the basis of small sample sizes, concludes that there are several risk factors for the development of PPCS.

Enhancing structural health monitoring of fiber-reinforced polymer composites using piezoresistive TiCT MXene fibers.

The anisotropic behavior of fiber-reinforced polymer composites, coupled with their susceptibility to various failure modes, poses challenges for their structural health monitoring (SHM) during service life. To address this, non-destructive testing techniques have been employed, but they often suffer from drawbacks such as high costs and suboptimal resolutions. Moreover, routine inspections fail to disclose incidents or failures occurring between successive assessments.

HfO/ZrO-based ferroelectrics present tremendous potential for next-generation non-volatile memory due to their high scalability and compatibility with silicon technology. Unlike the continuous polar layers in perovskite ferroelectrics, HfO/ZrO-based ferroelectrics are composed of alternating polar layers with oxygen shifts and non-polar spacers, which leads to a distinct ferroelectric switching mechanism. However, directly observing the switching process has been a big challenge due to the polymorph feature of nanoscale fluorites and the difficulty in in situ imaging on light elements.

Response to the letter "Reassessing the hypothesis of essential tremor as a prodromal feature of Parkinson's disease".

There is growing body of evidence that some patients with essential tremor (ET) have an increased risk for developing Parkinson's disease (PD) and, therefore, as noted in our paper, ET may be considered a prodromal feature of PD. Although a genetic causal link between ET and PD has not been established, future development of diagnostic and progression biomarkers may provide insight into the relationship between these common movement disorders.

Background: Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) is increasingly used for evaluation of congenital heart disease (CHD) in patients of all ages. Pediatric and adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) surgical programs require high quality CCT imaging as part of the multimodality imaging support expected of comprehensive care centers. Despite these expectations, there are no benchmarks or defined programmatic elements specific to the performance of CCT in patients with CHD.

Developments in robotic interventions have greatly affected the field of interventional radiology (IR), particularly when combined with imaging modalities such as fluoroscopy and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The aim of this review is to compare and evaluate the safety, precision, and clinical outcomes of fluoroscopy and CBCT-guided robotic interventions in IR. An extensive search of the literature on PubMed and Google Scholar databases was conducted up to November 2024.

Antipsychotic Use in Older Adults With Dementia: Community and Nursing Facility Trends in Texas, 2015-2020.

Objectives: To assess recent trends in antipsychotic use among older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs) according to their residential status and determine the factors associated with the use of antipsychotics.

Design: Population-based, cross-sectional study using Texas Medicare Fee-for-Service data.

Setting And Participants: Individuals ≥ 65 years of age with ADRDs who had at least 3 months of Medicare Part A and B, and Part D for prescription drug coverage, in any year between 2015 and 2020.

Carcinogenic Air Pollutants and Breast Cancer Risk in the Arkansas Rural Community Health Study: A Nested Case-Control Study.

Background: Previous epidemiological studies on the associations between hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and breast cancer (BC) have largely neglected rural, medically underserved areas in the United States, which differ in exposures and disparities compared to urban areas.

Objectives: We aimed to examine the associations between carcinogenic HAPs and BC risk in a rural population.

Methods: Using a nested case-control design, 574 cases and 2,295 incidence density-sampled controls matched 1:4 on index age and race were included from the Arkansas Rural Community Health study.

Exposome-Wide Association Study of Thyroid Function Using U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Data.

Previous epidemiologic studies examining thyroid function and chemical exposures have typically focused on a single or a limited number of chemical classes, often neglecting the effects of chemical mixtures. This study addressed this gap by exploring the associations between exposure to hundreds of chemicals and thyroid function using an exposome-wide association study (ExWAS) approach and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. We analyzed data from three NHANES cycles (2007-2008, 2009-2010, 2011-2012), which include measures of thyroid function (free and total triiodothyronine [T3], free and total thyroxine [T4], thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH]) and chemical biomarker concentrations from 9,082 participants.

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes after Fetoscopic Myelomeningocele Repair.

Objectives: To report the neurodevelopmental outcomes after a fetoscopic myelomeningocele (MMC) repair and to compare them with children who had an open-hysterotomy repair or a postnatal repair.

Study Design: 132 infants were included (prenatal repair: 93 [69 fetoscopic and 24 open-hysterotomy]; postnatal repair: 39). Neurodevelopmental outcomes at or beyond 18 months were evaluated by a developmental pediatrician using the Capute scales (Clinical Adaptive Test [CAT]/ Clinical Linguistic & Auditory Milestone Scale [CLAMS]) and/or during parental interview using Developmental Profile 3 (DP-3) test.

Insights And Questions For Success In A Pharmacy Academic Career.

An individual's insights for success during an academic career are enhanced by observing successful long-term career academicians and staff members within our colleges/schools of pharmacy and across the academy. What are the reasons for these individual's success? Based upon observing these successful individuals, we propose five simple insights that can aid in navigating organizational subcultures and cultures. These insights include knowing their WHY, utilizing the 24-48-hour rule to maintain resilience, demonstrating basic courtesy and politeness in their interpersonal interactions, recognizing the impact of words in written communications, and optimizing the use of communication methods beyond email and text messages.
